Kansas Angus Association Board of Directors

Kansas Angus Association

The President’s Pen Happy New Year to All, As I'm writing this last President’s message we are in the middle of a great deep freeze. I hope everybody survived it well. The board just met in Pratt for a meeting at the Angus- influence sale. It was a great sale as were the sales at Parsons and Paola. Thank you to all of you in-volved with these sales. I would like to congratulate Gordon Stucky as he will lead the American Angus Association as president in 2014. Also Lynne Hinrichsen is the new president- elect for the American Angus Auxiliary. Kansas continues to have significant influence in St. Joseph and beyond. Thank you for your time and service for us all. Last but certainly not least my gratitude goes out to Miss Esther McCabe for representing Kansas, the Angus breed and all Angus breeders so well this past year as Miss American Angus. Plans are being made for the Futurity, annual meeting, and banquet in January. Come spend the day at the meetings and then socialize that evening with old and new friends. Then you can spend the next day support-ing our young people at the junior. Thank you for putting up with me this year, it was truly my privilege. I would also like to give a large thank you to Anne Lampe our secretary/manager, Bob Bailey our Treasurer and Matt Caldwell our regional man-ager. These people are a great support staff and a large reason for our success.

Craig Rucker Kansas Angus Association President, 2013

Notes and News from Anne A New Year What do you do to ring in a new year? Do you gather with family and friends for a mid-night toast? Watch bowl games all day? Make resolutions and plans? Eat black-eyed peas and cabbage for luck? Whatever your tradition may be as Angus breeders, we are all eagerly awaiting a new calf crop while planning for next years and counting the days until the first blades of green grass emerge. The New Year is an opportunity to celebrate and learn from the past while embracing the fu-ture.

We will open the book. Its pages are blank. We are going to put words on them ourselves. The book is called Opportunity and its first

chapter is New Year's Day. - Edith Lovejoy Pierce

Angus Elects New Board Members and Officers The American Angus Association® announced new members and officers for its Board of Directors during the 130th Annual Meeting of Delegates in Louisville, Ky. Those serving the Association for three-year terms are: Thomas Burke, Smithville, Mo.; John Elbert Harrell, Opelika, Ala.; Leo McDonnell, Billings, Mont.; John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla.; and Kevin Yon, Ride Spring, S.C. Harrell, McDonnell, Pfeiffer and Yon are serving their second term on the Board. Gordon Stucky, Kingman, Kan., was elected as the new Association president and Board of Directors chairman. He succeeds Phil Trowbridge, Ghent, N.Y. Cathy Watkins, Middletown, Ind., was chosen by delegates to serve as Association vice president and Board of Directors vice chairman. Jim Sitz, Dillon, Mont., will serve as the 2013-2014 treasurer. A total of 311 elected delegates from 42 states and Canada represented Association members during the Annual Meeting of Delegates, held at the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center (KFEC) in conjunction with the North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) Super-Point Roll of Victory (ROV) Angus Show. 2013-2014 American Angus Association Officers As the Association’s newly elected president and chairman, Gordon Stucky will help guide the course for the business breed and its more than 25,000 members across the United States and Canada. Most recently, Stucky served as vice president and vice chairman of the board. He and his family own Stucky Ranch, west of Wichita, Kan. Stucky’s roots in Kingman County trace back to 1937, when his parents established a diversified crop and livestock operation. Stucky began the transition to a registered Angus cattle herd in 1976. After graduating from Kansas State University with an animal science degree, he returned to the ranch to fulfill his lifelong commitment to the Angus breed. Stucky has four children: Jesse, Jacob, Elizabeth and Jonas. Cathy Watkins, the incoming Association vice president and Board of Directors vice chairman, has been a dedicated leader for the Angus breed for several years, including serving as Association treasurer in 2012-2013. Watkins and her husband, Bob, raise Angus cattle at Beaver Ridge Farm in east central Indiana. They also work with Schaff Angus Valley in St. Anthony, N.D., which is one of the oldest on-going Angus herds in North America. Watkins divides her time between both operations in Indiana and North Dakota. A graduate from Michigan State University, she has a degree in animal science. While there, she was a member of the meat judging team and the livestock judging team. Off the farm, Watkins worked for the Internal Revenue Service for 33 years, retiring in 2007. Jim Sitz, who manages and operates Sitz Angus Ranch in Dillon, Mont., will serve as the next Association board treasurer. The Sitz Angus Ranch was started in 1928 by Will and Frieda Sitz, Jim’s grandparents. Sitz Angus Ranch has since grown and has become known as one of the top sources of Angus genetics in the country. A graduate from Brigham Young University-Rexburg in Idaho, Sitz holds a degree in business and agricultural management. He has served on the Montana Angus Association and the Montana Beef Council for the Montana Stockgrowers Association. Sitz, and his wife, Tammi have four children: Amber, Ashley, Tyler and Tucker. 2013-2014 American Angus Association Board Members Thomas Burke, Smithville, Mo., is a fourth-generation cattleman who has conducted registered Angus sales across the United States, Canada and the Caribbean through his work at the American Angus Hall of Fame. He owns the Burke Farm, homesteaded 125 years ago in southeastern Minnesota. Burke has served on boards of the Missouri Angus Association (MAA) and Atlantic National as well as chairman of the All-American Angus Breeders’. John Elbert Harrell, Opelika, Ala., has 44 years experience breeding and marketing Angus cattle. He and his partner, Mitch Lazenby, own and operate Highlander Ranch, where they raise 100-plus registered-Angus females and develop 150 bulls each year. Harrell is a director and past president of the Alabama Angus Association, and he and his wife, Ann, are strong supporters of junior Angus members. They have two children. Leo McDonnell, Billings, Mont., is a fourth-generation rancher, raised around both feedlot and cow-calf operations. He and his wife, Sam, live near Columbus, Mont., and have four children (Steve, Darcey, Kelsey and Buffy) and 10 grandchildren. McDonnell has been involved in several industry groups, being a past chair of the Montana Cattle Feeders; a delegate in the mid-1990s for Montana on the NCBA International Trade Committee and the Research and Education Committee; a co-

founder for the Ranchers-Cattlemen Action Legal Fund, United Stockgrowers of America; and currently a director of the U.S. Cattlemen’s Association and Cattlemen’s Beef Board. John Pfeiffer, Mulhall, Okla., and his wife, Gaye, have been married 32 years and have two sons. The family operates a diversified farming operation consisting of 2,200 acres of crops and pasture. Much of the wheat, alfalfa and corn go directly toward the 140 registered- and 75 commercial-Angus cows. Pfeiffer has been president of the Oklahoma Angus Association, a member of the first Oklahoma Ag Leadership Program, a director for the Oklahoma Cattlemen’s Association, and president of the Logan County Cattlemen’s Association. Kevin Yon, Ridge Spring, S.C., and his wife, Lydia, established Yon Family Farms in 1996, and the operation is now home to 700 head of Angus brood cows and 300 commercial cows. Yon has served as president of the South Carolina Angus Association and South Carolina Cattlemen’s Association, and as chairman of the South Carolina Farm Bureau Beef Advisory Committee, among other positions. He and Lydia have three children: Sally, Drake and Corbin, who are active in the NJAA. 2014 National Western Stock Show Nears Hundreds of families will make the trip to Denver, Colo., this January to join in the 108-year-old tradition of the National Western Stock Show (NWSS). Those if you that are currently NJAA members– watch your mail box for the “green book” sent out to members from the American Angus Association– it lists all of the contests, scholarships and junior shows available for NJAA members as well as LEAD conference information. It is not too early to start planning the contests you want to participate in at NJAS. For more info you can also visit www.angus.org. Don’t forget to mark your calendar for our summer preview show and annual meeting on June 6 & 7. See you soon, Kenzie Flory, KJAA President 2013-14

Happy New Year!!! Wow… where did 2013 go? Reflecting on the year it was complete with friends and family doing what we love to do best, going to sales, shows, meetings and traveling to make new/old acquaintances. It was a most enjoyable year following the adventures of Miss American Angus, Esther McCabe. Thank you Esther for representing Kansas and the Angus breed with such poise and professionalism. To start the new year, join us at the January Auxiliary meeting in the meeting room of the Prairie Pavilion on Saturday That evening the Auxiliary members will be hosting the annual Auxiliary Scholarship Auction at the Annual Futurity Banquet. Be thinking about what you can bring for the auction. Everything and anything from home baked goods, crafts, themed baskets, farm/ranch décor items and don’t forget to take a look in the Angus Gift Barn for ideas as well. During the banquet, the Auxiliary will present the Kenneth and Lorene Moore Scholarship to a well deserving College Sophomore as well as crown the 2014 Miss Kansas Angus. Good Luck to the juniors who have applied for these honors. Have a great 2014!!!

American Angus Auxiliary Elects Officers Kansas Lynne Hinrichsen is president-elect Deeply committed to serving the Angus breed and its future generations, the American Angus Auxiliary has played a central role in the American Angus Association® for more than 60 years. The volunteer organization recently celebrated that tradition during Angus events held in conjunction with the 2013 North American International Livestock Exposition (NAILE) in Louisville, Ky. The American Angus Auxiliary elected the 2013-2014 officers and regional directors during its Annual Meeting on Saturday, Nov. 16 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel. Members of the newly-elected officer team are: President Cortney Holshouser, Castalia, N.C.; President-elect Lynne Hinrichsen, Westmoreland, Kan.; Secretary-Treasurer Carla Malson, Parma, Idaho; and Advisor Cortney Hill-Dukehart-Cates, Modoc, Ind. The newly elected president, Cortney Holshouser, hails from Castalia, N.C. She has served as an officer of the North Carolina Angus Auxiliary for six years, and she and her husband, Karl, have been advisors to the North Carolina Junior Angus Association. Together, they manage Castalia Cattle Company where they offer custom flush and embryo transfer work. “It is an honor to be part of the organization that has helped shape my life, and is continuing to influence the future of the breed,” Holshouser says. “I look forward to serving in this capacity, and seeing the Auxiliary grow in the year to come.” The upcoming president-elect, Lynne Hinrichsen, has served as president of the Kansas Angus Auxiliary, regional director for the American Angus Auxiliary, and is a member of the Kansas Angus Association. Along with her husband, Ron, and children, Cale and Eva, the Hinrichsen family raises Angus cattle on R&L Ranch in Westmoreland, Kan. Members are also proud to welcome Secretary-Treasurer, Carla Malson. With her husband, Mark and family manage the Malson Angus and Herefords farm. Malson has served as advisor for the Idaho and Western States Junior Angus Associations, and president of the Western States Angus Auxiliary. The retiring president, Cortney Hill-Dukehart-Cates, and her husband, Tyler, manage Cates Farms in Modoc, Ind. As Auxiliary advisor, she is responsible for updating the Auxiliary guidelines for officers and committees and will serve as chairman of the Distinguished Woman and Nomination committees. The Auxiliary’s 2013 Regional Directors are: Region 1, Kathy Dubs, Montana; Region 2, Cindy Ahearn, Texas; Region 3, Shally Rogen, South Dakota; Region 4, Melanie Kiani, Mississippi; Region 5, Rachel Frost, Illinois; and Region 6, Marlene Dukehart, Maryland. Regional Directors are a source for information for interested members throughout the country. Auxiliary NAILE Annual Breakfast the Auxiliary welcomed 2013 NAILE participants to its Annual Breakfast on Sunday, Nov. 17 in the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center. While eating, the nearly 200 guests were entertained by a vocal performance from junior Angus member; Taylor Gazda of Athens, Ga. Afterwards, attendees listened to the 2013 Miss American Angus Esther McCabe’s retiring address. To conclude the event, the Auxiliary welcomed Thomas Burke, Smithville, Mo., to the stage to announce the Angus Hall of Fame $10,000 donation to the Auxiliary. __About the American Angus Auxiliary: The American Angus Auxiliary consists of individuals interested in the welfare of the Angus breed. Its members work to provide educational activities for junior Angus members, such as scholarship programs, awards and competitions.
