Are We There Yet? It’s an all-too-familiar question asked by children when traveling to grandma’s house or on vacation. Mom and Dad know exactly what the final destination is and they even have directions on how to get there. But what they aren’t privy to is a traffic jam due to accident on the highway, slick roads, a detour, flat tire or even an unplanned pit stop. Think of Christopher Columbus… charting waters never traveled. No maps and not even an idea of what the land at the end of the “big pond” is like…just a determination to get to the new world!

Correlate those two scenarios to the research world and perhaps you can begin to grasp just what the journey to human trials is all about. This is not a simple question to answer, but as the clock ticks and we approach the end of 2011, we hope this article will help you understand the work that you are a part of and the critical point we are at today.

Never BeforeOver the past six years, research teams at MD Anderson, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and University of California, Davis have been investigating the idea of John Kanzius to treat cancer noninvasively and without surgery so patients would not have to endure the often barbaric side effects associated with traditional chemotherapy and radiation therapy treatments.

The research you are funding involves tagging a cancer cell specifically with a metallic nano-particle and then passing controlled radiowave past the cell to destroy it.

We want to remind you that this research is new to mankind. Never before has research like this utilized the three key components, together at the same time, which we call the

We all search for hope. In this busy holiday season, it is easy to miss the obvious — lights and shopping, parties and traffic stand in the way. At the Kanzius Foundation, we still believe! We believe in the hope that cancer can be destroyed without side effects. In this issue of the Wave, we offer numerous ways to share that hope: the message, gifting and even participating in the PinkWell Challenge. As we enter the New Year, keep the faith and share the hope because…”there is a better way!”

The Kanzius Foundation needs nearly $2.5 million annually to make research of the world’s most promising cancer

treatment possible. Spreading these expenses

over a 40-hour week for 52 weeks, an average minute costs $20.

For all those lives counting on the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment, the chart below represents a breakdown of how each minute matters:

Research Minutes = Your Donation

One Minute = $20 Five Minutes = $100 One-Half Hour = $600 One Hour = $1,200 One Day = $9,600 One Week = $48,000 One Month = $208,000 One Quarter = $624,000 One Year = $2,496,000

What is Kanzius?

Kanzius is the last name of John Kanzius, the inventor

of the Kanzius Noninvasive Radiowave Cancer Treatment.

What is unique about this treatment?

• No surgery (Noninvasive)

• No side effects

• Utilizes targeted nanoparticles and

a patented radiowave generating device

• Destroys cancer cells without damaging

the neighboring “good” cells

this extremely focused project will honor John’s dream and the potential to treat the first patient much, much sooner.

But why? Why did John tell everyone about his idea so early in the process? “I never got to meet John so I didn’t have the opportunity to ask him that question,” sighed executive director, Mark Neidig. “But, as a broadcaster, I’m sure he wanted to be totally transparent.”

The Kanzius Foundation is not aware of any cancer research that has ever been so focused on such a specific treatment methodology before it was approved for human trials by the FDA.

Is this all hype? Absolutely not! This is HOPE! John knew there was a better way to treat cancer. MD Anderson Cancer Center, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and the University of California, Davis has proof that, “in theory” it works. Until we arrive at the “normal” starting line, the Kanzius Foundation will continue funding the research necessary to move forward as quickly as possible, but we remain diligent and careful each step of the way.

COINS for KANZIUSImagine people around the country working together to raise awareness and funds to research “the world’s most promising cancer treatment.” This is exactly what can happen with the Coins for Kanzius program, designed to teach participants that they can work together to accomplish great results.

The Coins for Kanzius program is an educational initiative that relies on a proven tradition – grassroots fundraising. In the past, national organizations have used grassroots fundraisers, such as coin saver books, to help fund research that has led to the curing of diseases like polio. Some of you may have lost a loved one, or have seen someone debilitated by the terrible disease, but because of the efforts of children around the world who collected dimes to help fight the disease and support research, diseases like polio are no longer a threat. Today, the threat is cancer and the Kanzius Foundation is committed to the fight through the Coins for Kanzius program.

The Coins for Kanzius program is simple. Each participant will be given his or her own coin book to collect 40 quarters over a designated period of time (we recommend a week) with the goal of everyone raising $10 using the coin book.

Support Kanzius in this important fundraising program by getting your school, class, club, or organization involved. Go to www.CoinsForKanzius.org and download the participation form or call Brenda Smith at 814.459.6224 or [email protected] for more details.

Sadly, at age 43, Dori’s determined battle with cancer ended this past June leaving Jim and their two children, Kathryn, 13, and Will, 11, to continue on. As an avid runner, Jim has increased his time on the road the last several years, running in two marathons and 10 half marathons. He says he runs to do something positive for himself—physically and mentally—and to show his children there are positive ways to deal with very difficult circumstances.

Having learned of the Kanzius Foundation during one of the early 60 Minutes broadcasts, Jim decided to SPREAD THE WAVE in Dori’s Legacy in a unique way.

“I ran the Cape Cod Marathon to honor my wife, not to mention raise money and awareness for the Kanzius Foundation,” Jim states. “I was impressed by the promising words of Dr. Curley during the 60 Minutes segment.” In the months leading up to the event, Jim ran 450 miles to prepare for the 26.2 mile race held in Falmouth, Massachusetts.

“I will continue to honor her memory by doing the best I can. The cancer epidemic deserves our full attention.” Jim has graciously agreed to host a Kanzius Foundation reception in Nashville to personally and publicly extend appreciation to his family and many supporters who encouraged him in his “Run for Dori.”

What is your story? Do you have a FACE you would like to share? Visit www.Kanzius.org/faces or call 814.480.5776 and tell us about your fight. It just may be

the inspiration one of our followers needs today.

Jim Brown – RUN for DORIDorothy Sawyer Brown of Nashville, TN, was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in June 2007. Like so many, life for the Brown family suddenly changed. Dori, as she was fondly addressed by her family and friends, was described as “a light who followed in the footsteps of Christ, loving, genuine, graceful, kind”—a role model to her husband, Jim, of 16 years. Left to right: Will Brown, Kathryn Brown,

Jim Brown, Anne Blair Brown (sister)

and Rachel Blair (mother).

At the Kanzius Foundation, your stories are what inspire and motivate us to stay focused and on mission. Our work is about FACES: the lives touched by cancer—the people making a difference as a result of it. But, Jim said it best, “…all of this would make Dori smile.” And we will not forget her smile!

This holiday season, as you reflect on the true meaning of the holidays and think about the gifts that you will be choosing for family and friends, consider the meaning and value of a donation to the Kanzius Foundation’s “Celebrate the Season” gift program made in honor of the people who mean the most to you. We will acknowledge your gift to the foundation by notifying your loved one or friend on our beautiful “Celebrate the Season” stationery.

Gifting a donation for a loved one is fast and easy! Either use the enclosed envelope, visit Kanzius.org/season or simply call our office at 814.480.5776. All honorary gifts made up until midnight, December 19, will be acknowledged.
