The end of 2014 is here already and we are all looking forward to a break and somerelaxing time with our loved ones.
Locals may well be going further afield, but I’m sure many of you will remain in Kāpitifor at least some of the summer holidays. Our numbers will be swelled by peoplestaying in their baches here and no doubt we’ll have plenty of visitors travelling throughthe district.
The Kāpiti Coast is a great place in which to spend your time. As you can see from thisguide, there is a huge range of events and activities planned for summer, for locals andvisitors alike to enjoy.
Have a browse through the guide to see exactly what’s on and what you might like to doand see.
Kāpiti has many unique qualities. Our “string of pearls” coastline, referring to our uniquecoastal villages, is unmatched. Whether you want to swim, sail, surf or fish, or simplysit on the sand, relax and admire the view, the 40 kilometres of unblemished beacheslinking our thriving communities are a wonderful attraction.
We also have stunning nature walks, heritage trails and cycle tracks at our fingertips,native bush and birds, world-class golfing and several niche museums.
If you have the chance to do so, I encourage you to visit the island after which ourDistrict is named. And please do visit the renowned Southwards car museum, take inour art galleries, drop in to our cafes and enjoy our restaurants.

Duck RaceFun Day
1st February – 9.30am till 4pmOtaihanga Reserve, Otaihanga
The Duck Race consists of 1,000 plasticrubber ducks racing a 200 metre stretch ofthe Waikanae River. The ducks are droppedfrom the footbridge, caught in a net and thenlet off all at once. They are all numbered sopurchase a ticket and if your duck wins youwill be a winner as well! If ducks get caughton the side of the river bank, they willendeavour to push them back into the race.The cost is $5 per ticket, $15 for four tickets.Each year the race aims to raise fundsfor a local charity, which is yet to beconfirmed. However, past events havecontributed towards the WellingtonFree Ambulance and RedPuppy Appeals.

Ngāti Toa and Kapiti Coast District Councilare working collaboratively to presentWaitangi Day 2015. This event will striveto provide an affordable day for families tocelebrate the Treaty and learn about someof the history of the area. There will be freeentertainment and activities for all ages.There will be historic kōrero and site toursabout the area; as well as a strong focus onrongoa and Māori medicine. Parking will beat MacKays Crossing and whanau are able towalk, cycle, or catch the tram down to thebeach area. Two hundred million years ago, gigantic earthquakes split a ten kilometre long
piece of rock from the Tararua ranges and created the magical landscape that
is the Kapiti Coast. The island protects the mainland coast from the prevailing

Landing presents a history of New Zealand aviation

Swimming PoolsThe COASTLANDS AQUATIC CENTRE at
Paraparaumu is the region’s newest and largest
swimming facility with a 25 metre lane pool, 2
kids’pools, sauna and hydroslide. There is a 33
metre indoor pool at OTAKI as well as a toddlers’
pool and spa. AtWAIKANAE there is a much loved
33 metre outdoor pool, kids’pool and hydroslide
which is open from early November to late March.

Freedom CampingFully self-contained motorhomes are permitted to
stay overnight at 9 locations designated by the local
council. Permits are not required. The Raumati,
Paraparaumu andWaikanae sites have a maximum
1 night stay, with 2 night stays permitted at Otaki.
Golf CoursesKapiti is a great place for golfers! PARAPARAUMU
BEACH GOLF COURSE, the region’s most famous
course, is considered to be amongst the best links
courses in the Southern Hemisphere. Twelve-time
host to the New Zealand Open, the course is both
spectacular and challenging.
Inland, sheltered in the valley behind Paraparaumu,
is the KAPITI GOLF CLUB. The short 9-hole course
might be picturesque, but it is also extremely
challenging.
Head north toWaikanae Beach and almost in the
shadow of Kapiti Island is theWAIKANAE GOLF
CLUB. The course is fully irrigated and groomed
and quite beautiful. Casual green fees are very
reasonable. A little further up the line is OTAKI
GOLF CLUB, another links course set amongst sand
dunes with fairways lined with mature trees.

MarketsThere are great regular weekend markets along
the coast. PARAPARAUMU BEACHMARKET and
WAIKANAEMARKET operate every Saturday from
8.30am to 1pm offering fresh fruit and veg, bread,

collectibles. OTAKI CRAFT MARKET runs every
Sunday from 9am selling arts and crafts, used
goods, tools, books, pot plants and lots more.
