The President ’s Message

The picnic at Squirrel Lake Park was a great time together, and the June Bunco brought the year to an end with fun and friendship. The Executive Board is busy lining up a guest speaker, setting meeting dates and planning activities for another busy Kappa year.

You will soon receive a letter from our Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Brenda Coble, explaining her initiative “Invest in Kappa.” IIK will give members an opportunity to make a tax-deductible financial donation to Kappa to fund our budget. At our return meeting in September, we will be collecting school supplies for needy students. Tisa has arranged a partnership with Northridge Middle School to assist their students. As school sales come up – especially at Wal-Mart and Office Depot – please stock up on notebook paper, 3-ring binders, spiral notebooks and book bags. Bring items to our September meeting. Thanks for getting us on a roll, Tisa!

Collecting 100 Challenge Pledges    Eta   State   members   generously   made   1,130  pledges   totaling   $17,020   during   the   100  Challenge.        Our  Kappa  pledges   totaled  $340.    Thank  you,  Kappa   sisters!     Chapters   are   to   collect   the  money  pledged  from  members  along  with  any  additional   donations,   bringing   collected  donations   to   the   Elon   Executive   Board  meeting,  September  12.

Please  send  your  checks  to  Jeannette  Carofano,

729  Meadow  Lake  Drive,  Matthews,  NC  28105  by  September  9th.

You   will   receive   an   email   from   Jeannette  reminding   you  of   the   amount  of   your   pledge.    If  you  did  not  pledge,  and  wish  to  do  so,  your  check  will  gladly  be  accepted.    Make  individual  checks  payable  to:    The  NC  DKG  Educational  Foundation.      The  Foundation  expresses  sincere  gratitude  to  everyone  who  believed   in   the   dream.     Thank  you  for  supporting  The  100  Challenge!

The NC Delta Kappa Gamma Educational Foundation

The Wheels are on Our Wagon! By:  Dr.  Judith  B.  Carlson,  Board  Chair

Since  the  establishment  of  our   foundation  as  a   tax  exempt  organization  was  announced  at  our  April  2015  convention,  we  have  been  “on  the  move.”    The   Board   of   Directors   met   recently   to  celebrate   this   huge   accomplishment   and   to  envision   a   plan   of   action.   What   an   exciting  time  it  is  and  what  possibilities  lie  ahead!    With  the  support  of  our  Eta  State  webmaster,  Beth   Winstead,   we   are   creating   our   own  website   for   the   Foundation.   We   are  structuring  4  major  committees  and  including  Society   members   who   do   not   serve   on   the  Board,   but   will   enhance   the   work.   We   are  accepting  the  contributions  that  were  pledged  in  the  100  Challenge   incentive  as  our  kick-‐off  event.   We   have   filed   the   application   for   a  Solicitation  License  and  been  approved  by  the  NC  Secretary  of  State.  Plans  are  underway  for  the   development   of   a   brochure   on   Funding  and  Giving,  with  a  plan  to  distribute   it  at   the  September  Executive  Board  meeting.    Also,   we   hope   to   hold   an   event   focused   on  fund-‐raising   during   this   2015-‐16   year,  benefitting   chapters.   Grant   writing   is   an  essential  as  we  build  our  funding  base  and  we  will   be   engaged   in   this   initiative.   It   is   our  intent   to   offer   both   a   chapter   Grant   and  Scholarship   in   the   coming   year,   perhaps   a  modest  amount,  but  a  dream.    In  2016,  a  Capital  Campaign  is  targeted.  These  visions   are   intended   to   show   the   “Power   of  the   Possible.”   Please   continue   to   stay  informed   and   we   thank   you   for   your  encouragement  and  your  genuine  support.

Little Tidbits and General Announcements

A SHOUT OUT for THE KAPPA NEW TEACHER PROJECT

Committee members continue to compile lesson plans/activities for new teachers and are contacting selected schools to participate in this endeavor. They plan to present their “Think-ercise” notebooks to new teachers at the beginning of the new school year. Such hard-working ladies! Hey, “School’s out for sum-mer!”

BUNCO CALENDAR!!! Mark these dates on your calendar!!! Bunco meetings are from 10 a.m. – noon at Rachel Goodgame’s home in Mint Hill.

• Saturday, November 14th • Saturday, January 23rd • Saturday, March 12th • Thursday, June 16th

Bunco is an easy-to-learn dice counting game – no skill involved! These get-togethers are a fun way to enjoy Kappa friendships, new and old, while adding funds for Kappa activities. If you haven’t been lately, join us in November. You’ll be hooked!

Do  you  have  good  news?    An  accomplishment  to  celebrate?      Email  [email protected]  so  we  can  all  celebrate  with  you!

Teacher Career Status Ruling By: Dr. Elaine Jenkins, Chair,

Educational Law and Policy Committee

On June 2, the NC Court of Appeals issued its ruling regarding teacher career status.

The court, which consists of a three-judge panel, ruled that the 2013 legislation to

end teacher tenure was unconstitutional.

What is especially interesting in this ruling to me were the words of Judge Linda Stephens

who wrote in the court’s majority opinion that for four decades, career status (or tenure)

governing teacher and principal employment contracts “have been a fundamental part of the

bargain” that so many teachers across NC “accepted when they decided to defer the

pursuit of potentially more lucrative professions, as well as the opportunity to work

in states that offer better financial compensation to members of their own profession, in order to

accept employment in our public schools.” Judge Stephens’ words echo the comments that I have heard from DKG members across the state. State lawmakers must think carefully not only about the salary offered to college graduates to teach, but in addition, they must consider the

very demanding and emotional nature of teaching that often scares potential candidates

away. There are lots of opportunities for bright, articulate young people to pursue in the

business world where they are often encouraged to be risk takers. Risk taking in the classroom

can be another story. This ruling ought to spark a conversation across the state about the nature of teaching in public schools and why the ruling matters. If our state cannot offer employment in public schools that

inspires confidence in those closest to the students, we will continue to see the exodus of

bright young candidates to the jobs that pay more money with far fewer headaches!

Charlotte Observer, June 3, 2015.)
