The Presidents’ Message

Freebird McKinney, the 2018 NC TOY at our joint meeting on Oct. 10, ended his presentation with a Greek Proverb:

“Wise men (and women) plant trees of which they will never know the shade.”

It is thought-provoking and so true of educators. They plant seeds in their students that they may never see flourish. Who knows how educators have impacted the future with their compassion, their passion, their guidance, their creativity, and their encouragement. Who knows how Kappa Sisters have inspired growth in beginning and veteran teachers, students, the community, and the world. Look at the dedicated, compassionate leadership as trees are planted by the many causes Clara supports, Melinda's work with her summer reading program, and Ann's passion for Easter Seals.

How can we successfully grow future educators and students? What trees will we plant?

Sincerely, Gloria & Jeannette Kappa Co-Presidents 2018-2020 [email protected] [email protected] 704-641-9189 704-814-7197

Wellness & Growth Initiative Martha Tillman, Wellness Committee Chairman

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart.” ~Elizabeth Andrew

On Sunday, October 20, 2019, I volunteered at the Charlotte CROP Hunger Walk at Independence Park. It was a moving experience to see the many faces of all ages and races giving of themselves, either to volunteer or participate by walking for others. I felt as if my heart would break from the joy! One of the components on the Self-Care Wheel discussed previously as one of our wellness activities relates to the spiritual-dealing with our faith and beliefs. Some areas included as spiritual are to: *Spend time outdoors *Meditate *Volunteer *Practice yoga *Pray *Get inspired I know that many of you already volunteer your time and talents for the betterment of those in need. I would like to thank you on behalf of the many lives you touch! Below you will find just a few opportunities where volunteers are needed.

1. Fix and serve a meal at a shelter or for a neighbor 2. Visit a nursing home or shelter 3. Read to a class 4. Organize a clothing or food drive 5. Mentor/tutor a student 6. Adopt a senior citizen

Volunteering will affect you in so many ways, and is an opportunity for growth. It develops your sense of connecting (Personal), enhances the ability to feel (Emotional), and helps your mental state (Psychological).

CELEBRATE A TEACHER: The 101 Donations Challenge Gloria Jones, Kappa

Teachers should be celebrated for their tremendous impact in our schools, in our communities, and in our lives. The NC DKG Educational Foundation wants to celebrate our talented, dedicated, and resourceful NC educators through a statewide 101 Donations Challenge. Each NC DKG region is challenged to recognize 101 teachers with a contribution of $10 each to the NC DKG Educational Foundation. Your donations will help to support the Foundation's Grants Program. The Foundation has grown from awarding $1000 in 2015 to offering up to $13,000 in grants this year. Each chapter in our region is tasked with celebrating at least 13 teachers. First of all, Kappa will celebrate our outstanding veteran teachers with a $10 donation to this fund in their names. These teachers are: Melinda Willison, Elizabeth Pratt, Dawn Patterson, Cindy Lockerman, Dr. Patricia Smith, and Reatha Andrew. Then we will need seven more teachers to celebrate to make our thirteen. Do you know a teacher that you would like to celebrate?

Bring your check made payable to the NC DKG Educational Foundation to the November 16th BUNCO meeting at Jeannette’s or mail it to:

Gloria Jones, 10083 Dressage Ln, Midland, NC 28107. Please include the teacher’s name and school.

I would like to send all thirteen forms together from our chapter.

We will have forms to complete at the Bunco meeting. The teachers will be notified of this honor. By participating in this challenge, it not only helps the foundation provide more grants to teachers, but it is a wonderful way to honor our veteran teachers and other teachers, as well as a great opportunity to celebrate potential members.

Freebird McKinney, NC 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, Inspires Key Women Educators of Delta Kappa Gamma

By Candace Armstrong, Kappa Charlotte

More than fifty DKG members shared enthusiasm, laughter and animated conversations in the private dining room at Jimmie’s Restaurant in Mint Hill on Thursday, Oct. 10. Kappa Chapter invited sisters of Beta Tau, Beta Sigma and Alpha Zeta to hear Freebird McKinney, North Carolina’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year, share his enthusiasm for being a social studies and world history teacher in Burlington, NC. Entitling his remarks “The Path of a Village Teacher: Being a Change Maker” he explained how he took from his own background and an unusual name to develop a means to welcome students into his classroom and to begin to challenge each one of them to become the best he or she could be. Freebird described the need for educators to build a shire for all children, a community where students’ basic needs as well as their intellectual growth are nurtured. As a lateral entry teacher McKinney knows that a person can redirect his life and he can write the first sentence of his life! A photo of students on a field trip standing waist deep in a bog illustrated his point. All of the students thought they were in a swamp and nervously studied the water to see what might be swimming around them. They didn’t know that a bog has no aquatic life. When they were told the difference, McKinney said, “Look up! Look around you!” They were surrounded by beautiful snowy egrets nesting in the trees around the bog. In closing McKinney called on the educators listening to be leaders and bridge builders. A photo of North Carolina’s barrier islands is a reminder that barriers can be protective but sometimes it is necessary to look over them to see the horizon and tomorrow’s promises. Another special guest was Dr. Teresa H. Cowan, President of the North Carolina Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma. Dr. Cowan presented the local chapter presidents with garden gloves to remind members that with the theme of her biennium, “Ready. Set. Grow.,” change and growth can lead to getting hands dirty. Members heard more about North Carolina’s Celebrate a Teacher campaign and its 101 Donations Challenge. Each region has been challenged to honor 101 teachers with $10.00 contributions to DKG Educational Foundation to fund the Foundation’s Grants Programs. Kappa Chapter has pledged to honor at least 13 teachers. To that end, their usual 50/50 raffle was held and opportunities to brag about children, grandchildren, students and selves were provided for $1.00. Those in attendance agreed that it was a splendid evening of encouragement, networking and seeing DKG North Carolina grow.

One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our

human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is a vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.
