As per a handout issued here, “during an inspection, a wholesale dealer in Downtown locality here was found offer- ing sale of the electronic product Hair Straightener carrying the mandatory declarations in violation of Legal Metrol- ogy (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011. “Under the aforesaid Rules, the mandatory declarations such as MRP, Net Contents, Name and address of manufacturer, name of product, month and year of manufacturer, etc., should be prominent and legible so that con- sumer can easily read them and make a rational choice of purchase. “The font size of the mandatory dec- larations was so small that it was not readable,” it said. MUKEET AKMALI Srinagar, Sep 10: As out- side chicken supply dried up in the wake restrictions in Kashmir, the home- grown poultry industry showed resilience catering to the local demand. As per poultry traders, the chicken prices in Kash- mir used to hover around Rs 130 to 150 a kg around this time, but since the uprising in Kashmir over two months ago, the rates of chicken have remained stable at around 90 to 110 per kg. This, as per the poultry traders is largely due to the availability of local produc- tion and cancellation of marriage functions in large numbers which has kept the price under check. “Usually what happens when you are dependent on outside supplies, the price is determined by the outside suppliers. But once you are self-sufficient in production, the prices remain under check which is good for consumers,” said a senior Animal Husbandry official. “The increase in poultry production over the years is being seen as step closer to self-sufficiency as our local production caters to around 80 percent of demand in Kashmir,” he added. President of Kashmir Valley Poultry Farm- ers Association, Ghulam Muhammad states that despite the hurdles created by the government, “the poultry farmers are leading poultry sector towards self- sufficiency.” “If you compare prices, for most part of this unrest they remained below Rs 100 a kg which is because of the fact that local farmers are aware about the situation and are selling chicken on lesser margin, even some- times on loss so that people don’t suffer. “CAPD has not issued any rate list for last two months, but still rates have remained stable,” he said, while accusing the gov- ernment of “hobbling the growth in the local poultry industry.” “It is a known fact that Kashmir Poultry sector is dependent on outside hatch- eries for supplying day old chicks that are reared in Kash- mir. But since the unrest, the government forces are stopping their supply which has now started hurting us,” he added. “The import of day old chicks has been impacted. A chick takes 30 days to become a full grown Chicken. But lack of day old chicks might cause shortage of chicken in days to come,” he said. Meanwhile, the decline in the prices during the unrest has been welcomed by the consumers. “Since hundreds of wedding orders were cancelled so the price drop in chicken is understandable. Chicken in last few days in the retail market is being sold at almost Rs 100 per kilo against the Rs 130- Rs 150 per kg prior to the unrest which has benefited the consumers,” said local con- sumers.
