Interest in vintage fashion has gone sky high over the past few months, with kooky characters such as Fearne Co#on and Alexa Chung fastly overtaking the old fashion favorites in

the style stakes, we all want a piece of the action. But what is it that makes vintage fashion so appealing? Spotlight investigates.Have you ever won-dered up Brick lane in

London, sunglasses on, bag on the shoul-der, eyes peeled to uncover exciting trea-sures in the wonderful range of vintage and second hand shops? Well if not, you should try it, as it’s quickly becoming the new way to shop.Like all cities across the country, Chester hasn’t escaped this fashion boom. With high streets up and down o"ering vin-tage styles, and the vintage look, it seems as though everyone wants a piece of the action.Queens of Vintage, an online fashion maga-zine dedicated to the vintage lifestyle sug-gest the most popu-lar styles of vintage clothing for people who are just looking

With the country’s economy in its cur-rent state, can we a"ord to have an ethi-cal conscious when it comes to the clothes we buy? For people who like to keep up with the trends, shops like Pri-mark, whose Chester store is opening next month, o"er an a"ord-able solution to looking good, and for some people, sadly the price of freedom doesn’t seem to be too high. Firstly, let’s clarify what it actually means to be ethically sound. Fair-trade goods have reached an all time high, and now include products such as Cad-burys chocolate and Kenco co"ee; but this hasn’t always been the case. Fair Trading basically means giving the traders, who are

often poor and from under developed coun-tries, a fair price for their goods and a fair trading relationship. A spokesperson from The Fair-trade Founda-tion said: “Fair-trade is about be#er prices, decent working condi-tions, local sustain-ability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. By requiring companies to

pay sustainable prices which must never fall lower than the market price, Fair-trade ad-dresses the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the poorest, weakest producers. It enables them to improve their position and have more control over their lives.”Thanks have to be given to Primark for

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Spotlight on Chester MAY 2010 the lengths that they have taken to make every e"ort for us to be able to shop without the worry weighing on our minds of who is paying the consequences for our cheap shopping. What used to be dubbed as clothes from ‘child labour’, many Brit-ish stores have really turned things around, and made their a"ord-able fashion ethically sound. Primark has had a lot of bad press in the past, and has had to answer to serious accusations about the ethical involvement of child workers to make their clothes. People want to know, when the clothes are so cheap, how can Primark ever a"ord to make them? Do we know the full story of how and where these items originated? We hear such horror stories of children as young as four years old work-ing so hard that their !ngers bleed, all for

the measly total of something like 10 pence a day. How, living in the developed society we do, could this ever be allowed to happen? So when Primark !rst crash-landed on the scene in 1995 when the UK business was launched, there was an immediate $urry of inter-

ethics and its values”. So it seems we can spend until our heart’s content, safe in the knowledge that the only damage is to our own bank accounts. It is important that to maintain good relationships with farmers, growers and workers, as they are, after all, just trying to make a living, just like the rest of us. Next time you’re out shop-ping, check the labels; a few extra pence could make all the di"erence to a family somewhere.Primark opens in Ches-ter later this month.

How can Primark a"ord to sell their goods so cheaply, so success-fully, and continue to be ethically sound?Primark’s now well pub-licised values and ethi-cal considerations of their clothing puts our conscientious minds at rest. A spokesman for the company said: “Primark remains whol-ly commi#ed to ensur-ing that its customers can continue to shop at Primark con!dent in its commitment to its

A Cap sleeve will be cool enough for the wed-ding and also modest enough for a church service- add a tai-lored jacket if it is a very formal occasion. A monochrome dress, with a small pa#ern is bang on trend, and teamed with bright shoes and bag you will look the belle of the ball!

q) I’m a size 18 and really like to follow the fashion trends. How can I wear fring-ing?a) Fringing is a tricky trend to get right, go will small accents rather than all over. Try a fringed bag or a waistcoat over a checked shirt.q) How can I look taller and browner on the beach?a) Make everyone envious on the beach with high cut bikini bo#oms to give the illusion of lengthy legs. Try a white two piece to make tanned skin appear darker, but avoid white if you are very pale or burn easily as white may make you either look ghostly or emphasise a burnt bod.

q) I love wearing red

Look out for one with a hint of blue in it, this is help to take out the harsh yellow tinge of the teeth, and will make them look whiter.q) I love summer, but I hate my legs and baring the $esh brings me out in a cold sweat! Soap and Glory, When all you’re looking for is one night tanned:I love the bo#le and name of this product, but as a tanning prod-uct, it fails miserably. I looked like I’d been tangoed.

Rimmel Sun Shimmer:It goes on really smoothly and looks really even, and lasts all night. It’s a natural shade, but its quite dark on fair skin. It doesn’t last long so buy medium shade, and use less.

Dove Summer Glow: It smells nice but it seemed to look streaky within a few days. After a couple of uses though I felt shimmery and tanned and was pleased with the result. Use needs to be monitored!!

The !rst gripping scene leads you through the lives of Tyler and Ally by the hand, until the devastating end. Al-though engaging at times, the ending is crass and lacks imagination. Despite the eye candy, this !lm is be#er forgo#en.

Not for the mainstream fan, MGMT’s latest e"ort Congratulations is a spacey journey, with moments of lovely melodies. De!nitely a grower, this a#empt lacks direction, and is perhaps all too evidently self-indulgent. The record will still be heard by millions, but per-haps the magic from Oracular Spectacular has been lost.

The Other Hand is a gripping novel about how one hideous event on a beach in Nigeria can bring together two worlds. In a political thriller that tackles the di%cult theme of Britain’s treatment of asylum seekers, Chris Cleave creates a beautiful novel that forces the reader to re-evaluate what is important to them. A brilliant read that will stay with you.52

comes to the point where I don’t recognise my aged re$ection (I am of course hoping that by then 60 will be the new 40 and I’ll have nothing to worry about anyway). The adverts on TV that have all of a sudden start-ed to appear suggest in the almost supernatural way that adverts sub-liminally tell you that yes your life isn’t worth living without this amazing oven cleaner, and yes it’s three quid more than the others but my god is it worth it, that in actual fact, having work done is a feasible, af-fordable for women these days. This just shows I suppose, like so many things, anti-aging and con!dence boosting pro-cesses have reached a new level, and it is something that just moves with the times. In !fty years or so if you haven’t joined the group, you’ll really stand out in the crowd as the only one with enough crow’s feet to start a bird sanctuary. Maybe I should start saving.

So has our culture become accepting of this kind of self-correcting? And if it has, should it be? In my opinion, how someone feels about themselves is important. Con!dence is the key to so many things, from be#ering careers, to allowing people to achieve their goals. However small, the ability to rise above any insecurities is a vital part of this process. So is it wrong then that so many people seek to !nd this li#le lift from some-thing as arti!cial, and quite frankly expensive, as plastic surgery? Isn’t it a li#le sad that we can’t come to terms with who we are as people without this need? Mind you, this, like many others, seems to be an American trend, and of course a massive gener-alization – of course not everybody’s main aim is to hold onto their youth with both hands. But in all honesty, I think people age much more gracefully without being pumped full of chemicals, and I for one intend to stay away from anything arti!cial when it

We seem to have come to the stage now where we aren’t that bothered by what work people have had done.

Whereas in the past, plastic surgery, Botox and enhancements was almost something to be ashamed of, people would tell work colleges they were spending a week in Corfu for their friend’s sister’s wedding; or that all of a sudden they had the urge to go visit some aged relative who was dying of some unspeci!ed disease, just to get the time o" work and away from the social circle, and would come back looking so refreshed and replenished that everyone thought that the sea air had done them good. Nowadays however, people seem to wear it as a badge of honor; yes I survived 3 grueling weeks of drinking liquidized food through a straw and am now almost an Olympic contender for ventriloquism after having my head mummi!ed, don’t I look !ve years younger?!
