Introduction My presentation is about a leader in my own field, Health

Information Technology. During her career she connected herself with two great companies. These companies allowed her to us her education, talents and business mind to help the growing of a new age in the Information system. Ahima and DeVry have two things in common both employed my leader and both are making education common, both and healthcare to work for its best hand and hand. Two minds sharing the same persons goal and vision.

My course project is about a leader in my field of study. Let me Introduce to you my leader. I will establish my leaders purpose in this field. Preview of my presentation.

My course project is about a leader in my field of study.

My course project is about a leader in my field of study. This leader is Kathleen Frawley, JD, MS, RHIA, FAHIMA. Kathleen Frawley is a professor

and chair person of Health Information Technology program at DeVry University in North Brunswick, NJ. Kathleen is also one of the board of directors for AHIMA, American Health Information Management Association where she takes the role on as president/chair person.

I will give information about my leader’s characteristics and tell you about her life and how she transitioned into this important part of her life. Let me Introduce to you my leader.

Kathleen Frawley, JD, MS, RHIA, FAHIMA, is a professor and chair person of the Health Information Technology program at DeVry University in North Brunswick, NJ. Kathleen is also one of the board of directors for (AHIMA), American Health Information Management Association where she has taken the role as president/chair person of this growing cooperation. She is the president of her company the Frawely and Associates, LLC. She is a graduate from J.D, Law and Wagner College were she received her M.S. Health Services Administration. Kathleen has many honors and awards

I will now establish my leaders purpose in this field.

My leaders purpose is to grow in Information Technology and to help others to do the same. Kathleen Frawley establish herself as a leader in the field of Health Information Technology when she was working as a birth certificate clerk, and her purpose is to connect with professional networks by getting back in touch with her self. Kathleen’s purpose in life is to pursue her desire to identify and assist students who are at risk of falling or dropping out of school. For example, Kathleen Fawley gave a presentation at the Assembly on Education and Faculty Development Institute a couple of years ago on student drop out. She believes that a lot of Health Information Management programs are struggling with this issue of student dropping out, that she really wants to identify barriers that will prevent students from being successful.

Here is a preview of this presentation.

To give you a preview or glance at my presentation. I will talk about how education and a motivated spirit will help you to want to do and be your best. Kathleen shows us just as many others that career planning is not simple and takes education. She is a leader who has been given a chance in life to be a part of the growth and change of healthcare and the way it will be redefined in the world. The two companies that Kathleen will have the opportunity to help in their plans and changes are AHIMA and DeVry University.

AHIMA was founded in 1928 when the American College of Surgeons established the Association of Record Librarians of North America (ARLNA) to "elevate the standards of clinical records in hospitals and other medical institutions."

As the industry changed, so did the organization's name. In 1938 it became the American Association of Medical Record Librarians (AAMRL) and in 1970 the American Medical Record Association. Its current name, adopted in 1991, captures the expanded scope of clinical data beyond the single hospital medical record to health information comprising the entire continuum of care.

AHIMA is committed to promoting and advocating for high-quality research, best practices and effective standards in health information and to actively contributing to the development and advancement of health information professionals worldwide. AHIMA's enduring goal is "quality healthcare through quality information.“

My Field of StudyMy Field of Study

My reason for choosing this leader in my field of study.

My expected graduation time.

Page 9: Katheen Frawley

My reason for choosing this field of study.

I chose this field of study because I have over 15 years of work experience in the Health Information Management Department. My first job was at a fast food restaurant, I then I went into Job Corp and completed my nursing diploma. I later started working at the Hospital of University of Penn Medical Center in Philadelphia in the food service department. I took up some computer classes to prepare for a transfer and I ended up transferring into the Medical Records Department. From there I became more and more interested in the records department. After many years in the field I became interested in becoming a Medical Records Coder and Biller. With careful research I learned that in order to become certified in the Medical Records I would have to acquire my CCS, or RHIA/RHIT. In noting the requirement I started to focus more on acquiring my CCA and I tested for the exam but needed thirteen point to pass. I decided I would try it again but I notice many were trying to acquirer their RHIT/RHIA to work in HIM. I looked into many schools and came across DeVry. I like DeVry's program and its CAIM approved so I enrolled. Another good thing with these degrees a person can hold a manager’s position or coding position much different with just the coding certification which limits you to only coding jobs. .

Page 10: Katheen Frawley

My expected graduation time.

My Expected graduation is June 2015 only because I al attending DeVry part time. After this class I am going to look into changing over to Full time attendance. If I can do this then I will be completing my program in June 2014. I n this class I have assess out my Leadership Qualities. As a leader I must have goals for my life that others can see and will want to use as a encouragement. On my Week four learning plan worksheet I stated that I wish to be successful in college, in my career, and in my personal life. I have completed numerous of self-assessments, examined my prior experiences, consulted with others, and considered my own future. As a result, I have identified strengths and areas that are needing improvement such as my personality, habits, attitudes, learning skills, and so on. I want to make positive changes to promote my personal success. Reading Improvement goal. Time management improvement. Attitude improvement skill. Personality and social skills improvement

I am working towards the goal of becoming a RHIT in order to pursue a career in the IT area of the Health Information Systems. I plan on completing the degree and then take a class in A+ certification and security along with EHR certification, then search for IT positions in the Information Technology area either healthcare or IT security

Page 12: Katheen Frawley

The reason I have chosen this leader in my field.

The reason I have chosen this leader in my field. In the early part of this

presentation I explained to you about my plan and reason for choosing this career path. During the time while studying for my CCS I realized why go to a community college or take some online classes for medical coding and receive a certificate or diploma to then have to take the certification exam in order to become certified, with limits to just coding and billing. Foe a medical coder fresh out of school must first have medical experience in order to do medical coding, this means someone must hire you on a trial bases. I then began to look into the RHIT/RHIA program. I learned that they are not the same but do have a broad range of employment coverage meaning you can be a medical coder, or part of management and even work in the Health Information system were as a person whom hold a CCS can only code. When my professor informed us to search out a leader in our own fields I was glad because I remembered reading about Kathleen Frawley on the AHIMA website and as I was reading I scrolled down and noticed she also works for DeVry so I was ecstatic and began my research on her. She works in both of my fields of interest, HIT) Health Information Technology and IT) Information Technology.

Kathleen juggles her career with two great companies and is still able to enjoy other positive characteristic ,traits and fun.

During a personal interview with the AHIMA, in the JOURNAL of AHIMA Kathleen tells of the things she enjoy to do

My personal strengths as a Leader.

My assessments from the course (Guiding Statement Journal) My guiding statement: The thing that I value is becoming someone of true value and purpose, someone who does things correctly and is sure of what to do. I value what God morally   expects of me and how this will all apply to my overall prosperity. This why my guiding statement will help me to complete this entire goal of pursuing this degree by keeping  my mind on the positive progress all towards being a strong leader of my life.

The things I learned about myself from my assessments? My statement at a scale from 1 to 10 is a number 8. I rate it to be a number 8 because I am not all the way there in my life, but I am pressing to mature and take hold of working toward becoming someone of true value with purpose.  I will become a 10 someday. Me changing my character and mind will help in completing this new direction. There are many people who are not spiritual and do not believe in God but I mention God because I have internal and external value. I only can say I will work hard at my change and if any of the above questions happen then I have to accept it and get up and try again, no need to jump the bridge. My personal weaknesses as a leader. My weakness can be located in my journal assessment) I can say that I

like to be the leader the one in charge.  When I am up against a opposition I will work to close the conflict and keep the peace, if I turn the matter into my favor I am fine, I will leave it alone, but to no means do I feel comfortable if there is bitterness in the after math.I have learned and its a good thing I am presently practicing this now, is to NOT feed the conflict with constant negative talk, but instead step away from it keeping the peace and remembering the norms that we all allowed to make our own chose.(Journal Conflict)

The Main point

The main point and purpose for this presentation is to show how hard work and determination can lead you to great success.

In her senior year a coding supervisor at her work place recommended that she pursue her coding credentials. Kathleen decided to go for it she attended a post bachelors program and once completed she had her management internship at Johns Hopkins where her director who was the first African American President of the American Medical Records Association (this was the name of the health association before it became( AHIMA). She then became an assistant director at Hopkins and started doing a lot of volunteering for the association straight out of school.

By the time Kathleen career started to take a change into the Health Information field. Sometime in 1987 she became the Vice-President and Counsel for the Jamaica Hospital. After 5 years she became the Vice president, legislative and public policy services for AHIMA she then moved into a position as the Director, Health Information Services for St Mary’s’ Hospital and the Present of her own association the Frawley and Associates, LLC. Frawley enjoyed the HIM field and took on a position with AHIMA as the President/Chair-elect in 2012 at the same time she was employed Chair, of HIT at DeVry for 8 years and finally a turn for the best would come Frawley became the President/Chair of AHIMA in 2013. She is presently holding both position with the two companies that work hand to hand AHIMA and DeVry University where she moves the Information Technology and Health Information Technology into its gear of progression
