task : To Re-design 3 relating book jackets only using typography.

I chose to re-design the 4 Ingredients Cookbooks, volume 1, 2 and Fast Fresh and Healthy. Their original covers which are pictured to the left use ghastly colours and fonts. It was in desperate

need of a make over.

I wanted to be cliche and create as much of the text that was humanly possible within the time frame with food myself, making this an underlying theme. I created all major headings with hand

made typography and used basic fonts from the computer for the rest so it didn’t over power what was important. For the text on the back I got colours from the food I used to keep it all flowing

well together. To keep good visual hierachy I made the 4 Ingredients the most prominent on all, followed by which volume of the book it was then the blurb and so on.

I kept the book sizing the same as the original with a soft cover. This makes it good to hold, cheaper to make and the user won’t feel so devasted spilling food on it because it is made to!

My goal was to create fun and interesting books. I wanted it to be something people would look at and think ‘I wonder how on earth they did that?’ The whole point of this book is to inspire people

to cook new things, that there are many ways to cook simple yet delicious meals. So I wanted my covers to inspire the reader to be creative; to love their food. Also by having such creative book

covers with food it also shows that the writters know how to handle their food. To be able to cook something is one thing, but to make it look beautiful is another. My book covers are bright, fun

and colourful to stand out on the shelf and inspire people.

book 1: 4 Ingredients

I wanted to create my first re-design with tomato paste. I kept the colour scheme simple with 3 colours; red, green and white. Because this technique could easily have been very simple i wanted

to set my self a challenge and designed a funky looking 4. But kept the rest of the text simple so it contrasts with this unusual 4 and is easy to read.

To create this design I first drew many hand sketches then transferred it into illustrator to vectorise it. I made a stencil out line and printed this out. Carefully I cut this stencil out with a stanley

kife and placed it on a white placemat and smeared the tomato paste on top. It was difficult to get the paper to stay in the same place and if I were to do it again I would do this step in a different

way. When I was happy with the look of the paste i carefully peeled back the paper revealing my typography. It wasn’t perfect but it was enough for me to photograph. I opened it in photoshop

and by using the liquify tool edited out the defaults.

I felt like something was missing so adding some herbs around it to give it contrast and make it look complete. At first my herbs were a pretty horrid green and after critiques I edited the sat-

uration and brightness of the leaves to darken them, which i felt tied it all together.

For the rest of the text I just used fonts on my computer that i had downloaded from dafont.com and played around with colouring to get to my final result.

I think it is a book cover that will stand out on the shelf. It’s interesting to look at and without even reading it you can tell it has something to do with food, which is exactly what i was after.

For my second re-design I wanted to make it look fun. My food of choice for this book jacket were spices; paprika and ginger. I liked how these two colours complimented eachother well.

The technique I used to create this was again cutting out a stencil, but a little differently. I sketched on double sided tape my design and cut it out with a stanley knife. I got another white place

mat and peeled one side of the double sided tape off and stuck it down making sure to place it was in the right spot. Once they were all down i peeled the other side off and began sprinkling

the spices on. I would grab pinches at a time and follow my template making sure it was sticking to the tape. After this was completed i go a stick i use for painting that has a rubber point on

the end to neaten up all of the edges.

After this was completed I photographed it and took it to photoshop to add in the remaining text. I took colours out of the spices to make sure it all tied in together well.

I think this is an effect book jacket as it agains stands out on the shelf and immediately tells you what this book may be about. It grabs the readers attention and looks fun and interesting, hope-

fully encouraging the reader to check out the book.

book 3: 4 Ingredients, Fast, Fresh & Healthy

For my third and final design I set myself a huge challenge. I decided to carve ‘4 Ingredients’ out of a watermelon because what is more healthy and fast to prepare than fruit. It did take two

attemplts but I am extremely happy with the results. I thought the contrast of the green, white and red worked really well.

To do this I used a sharpie to sketch my design on the watermelon. Then ran the stanley knife along all of the lines just enough to cut throught the skin. I first carved off the skin in the places

where it didnt need to be. Then gradually just carved all out all of the white to reveal the read and juicy watermelon. After many hours and cuts I was so happy with the design it didn’t actually

need any altering on the computer.

To display my watermelon I put it in a bowl with other fruit and place it on a table. I then used the same technique from 4 ingredients 2 to write ‘Fast, Fresh & Healthy. I sketched it on double

sided tape, cut it out with a stanley knife then peeled back on side of the tape. I covered it in bread crumbs and place it around the bowl. For the rest of the design I just covered the table with

bread crumbs to what i thought looked visually appealling.

For the rest of the design I just kept it simple and again took colours from the watermelon to make it all connect together.

Again I think that this book will stand out on the shelf and is fun and interesting.
