Editor’s NoteHi everyone,

So March is here already...hopefully the days are slowly getting longer plus don’t forget, the clocks go forward at the end of the month. Spring is coming!

In this month’s issue, you can read about Ryan’s departure to Demelza House. We wish him the best of luck with his new role.

There is also a number of meetings that have been organised for our staff to discuss the merger process and its aims. Make sure you try and arrange to attend one of these sessions in April. You can also read about our success in retaining the Young Persons’ contract in Greenwich and the latest update on the Greenwich Prison’s implementation - both start on April 1. There’s also a reminder of Information Governance did you knows on page 5.

Don’t forget the KCA Celebration party on May 15 - we’ll update you with more information in the next issue. As always, please let me know if you would like to include anything in April’s edition of KCA Today.

Best wishes,

Hayley

Ryan Campbell is moving on to a new and exciting role with Demelza as their new Chief Executive. Demelza Hospice Care for Children is a charity supporting families across Kent, South East London and East Sussex. He will start in his new role at the end of April. You can find out more at their website www.demelza.org.uk

Ryan has worked with KCA as our Chief Executive for the last 2 years. During his time with us he has overseen significant change, bringing together clinical and operational leadership and our substance misuse and mental health service management structures. He has been directly involved in contract wins and losses, and of course led our merger with Addaction. We wish him the very best for his future at Demelza.

Ryan said: “This is a strange farewell to write. Normally a Chief Executive leaving would be the end of an era and the beginning of a new one, but of course KCA is already embarking on its new era.. I‘m going to carry on my Chief Executive journey elsewhere as Karen and the Addaction Exec take everyone forward. KCA has genuinely been the best and most rewarding time of my career so far.”

To work with an organisation which faced huge change and challenges, and then to take it into the biggest of all changes in the form of the merger, and to meet only dedication, professionalism, vocation, and incredible commitment to the welfare of service-users in return, has been humbling. I will always be proud of the last two years, and what we have built for the future, as I hope will you.”

Merger update meetings A number of meetings have been arranged in April for KCA staff to discuss the aims and process of the merger with the Executive team.

Following on from the previous merger meetings, we have taken feedback from the last events into account and have scheduled them further in advance so that people can arrange their diaries more effectively to prioritise their attendance. We have scheduled three events for staff to be able to meet with members of the Executive team. Ideally we would like staff to be able to attend one of these sessions below. The available dates are:

• Tuesday 21st April - The Cardinals Hall, Woking Football Club, Kingfield Stadium, Kingfield, Woking, Surrey, GU22 9AA from 12pm to 2pm

• Thursday 30th April - Best Western Bromley Court Hotel from 10am to 12pm • Thursday 30th April - Augustine House, North Holmes Campus Canterbury from 2pm to 4pm Please support your teams to be able to attend one of these events if possible – but as usual, please do not cancel any service user appointments or groups in order to achieve this.

Greenwich Prisons Update

YP service staying foot in Greenwich

Young people living in Greenwich will continue to benefit from our dedicated drug and alcohol service as we have been re-awarded the contract.

The new service is for under 19s and up to age 25 for young adults with learning difficulties. The focus is on protecting young people from the long-term effects of substance misuse and to raise awareness of the dangers to those who are at risk of substance misuse and to those who have already started experimenting. It will also provide a range of support and advice that focuses on early intervention and reducing vulnerabilities in young people at risk of misusing substances, working closely with local schools. Interventions include harm reduction information and risk advice and young people can also engage in more structured interventions to address problematic substance misuse, via one-to-one sessions and group work, using Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and Motivational Interviewing.

The new contract, starting in April, has been awarded by Greenwich Borough Council and the service’s model will work to meet the council’s priorities of resilience, prevention and protection.

KCA’s Assistant Director for Substance Misuse, Jane Wright, said: “We’ve done some really good work in Greenwich during the last contract and plan many more initiatives for the next four years. The services we provide are wide-ranging, giving support to young people and their families/carers depending on the degree to which it is needed. We’re delighted to have the opportunity to continue working with young people in Greenwich.”

We are well on the way with our implementation phase of the new contract with HMP Belmarsh, HMP Thameside and HMP and YOI ISIS, which starts on April 1. We are working closely with our prime provider, Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust to bring our new colleagues over to Addaction. This service will incorporate both substance misuse and mental health provision as part of a wider integrated health care system.

Our shared vision is that our stepped care model will make health everybody’s business. Our integrated service begins at reception and extends throughout the offenders’ time in custody. Our objective is to maximise access to care and promote effective health protection, self-care, evidence based treatments and positive health outcomes. We will be working collaboratively with colleagues in Turning Point, CRI and Lifeline who contribute to the delivery of recovery focused programmes and support to individuals in these prisons.

Jan Annan, Assistant Director at KCA who is leading our implementation, said: “We are really looking forward to being a part of this new integrated healthcare system and working with a range of colleagues both within the partnership and across the three prisons.”
