Volume 33 | No. 3 The Journal of the Southern Aerosol Technical Association Fall 2017
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
Keep us informed of any issues you would like to
have addressed. Your Directors are here for you!
Dear SATA Members, What a great Fall meeting we had at the Marriott Hilton Head Resort! We managed to dodge two of the East Coast storms and had wonderful weather for the events. The Golf Tournament was a blast as was the Putting Challenge. There was a short memorial at the evening dinner for Paul Hvizda, one of the SATA Directors, who passed suddenly earlier in the year. We were pleased to have his father, Vince, join us.
We say farewell to three Board members --- Nathan Barnes, Kim Miller and Lori Parker and we welcome six new Directors: Elena Badiuzzi, ITW Pro Brands; Irene Bolling, Zep Inc.; Jeff Colker,
Plaze-Georgia; Abby Haywood, Arylessence Inc.; Ruben Morales, Technical Chemical Company; and Brad Nash, Aeropres Corporation. Lori Parker was recognized for her nine years as Treasurer. Lori will stay involved as she has volunteered to help with some committee work. Our Founder’s award was presented to Irene Bolling. Irene has been active in the industry and regulatory sphere for many years as well as serving on the SATA Board for a total of 18 years! She again has joined the Board for another stint starting this year.
The Innovation awards were again presented in three categories. The awards this year went to RSC Chemical Solutions, ITW Techspray, and for the first time – a joint award went to Formulated Solutions and Bayer Consumer HealthCare for their work together on their winning product. A full slate of speakers covered the gamut from various regulatory issues to product legal protection to the technical aspects of the industry. We hope the Planning Committee’s hard work paid off for you in presenting a well-rounded educational program. As announced at the meeting, SATA is joining NAA and the other regional aerosol associations in the Spring for a joint “summit” meeting to be held in Nashville. As far as I know, this will be the first time all of the US aerosol associations have been in one place at the same time. We are looking forward to this and hope you will join us there! Stay tuned for more information on this exciting and unique meeting! Until next time – stay safe and keep us informed of any issues you would like to have addressed. Your Directors are here for you!

SEAN FITZGERALD, CAPCO, spoke about the rebranding efforts of The Consumer Aerosol Products Council (CAPCO). CAPCO has listened to consumer insight to move from a reactive to a pro-active message of Make More Magic. The new message will focus on how aerosols make a difference in people’s lives. A consistent message will be shared across social media. CAPCO website [email protected]

KYLE BUTZ, Technical Advisor, Spray Analytics, described the different techniques for particle size measurements, such as laser diffraction, cascade impact, and high-speed video. The techniques are not all the same and the test results have to fit the proper technique. The person testing must understand what information they are looking for and be able to apply the proper technique. Does the person need large droplet like a pepper spray or small droplet like a deodorant? It is a process of developing the formulation with the proper delivery expectation. By changing the packaging consideration, the same formulation can have very different product characteristics. www.sprayanalytics.com [email protected]
DR. MARK JONES, Executive External Strategy and Communications Fellow, The Dow Chemical Company, started by comparing Fallen Flags, which is a term for railroad companies who are no longer in existence due to bankruptcy or merger but have followers who collect their memorabilia, to the number of chemical companies who have declined but have no memorabilia collectors. Chemicals affect our everyday lives from the food we eat to how it is produced. Chemistry is an iterative process, we find a solution to a problem and then go back to fix the problem that the solution created. Dr. Jones showed some new technology that Dow has developed in response to issues such as BPA and environmental concerns. mjphd.net [email protected]

JOSE PONS, President, Sicamu Inc., gave a historical overview of the Montreal Protocol and Kigali Agreement. There are two different environmental problems addressed by two different bodies, the Montreal Protocol deals with ozone depletion while the Kigali Agreement deals with Global Warming. The Kigali Agreement is a phasedown of Global Warning HFCs. There is uncertainty about the future reduction of HFCs in the US because of the recent D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals Decision. www.Sicamu.com [email protected]
HELEN WALTER-TERRINONI, Manager of Global Sustainability and Regulatory Affairs, Chemours, presented an update on the SNAP (Significant New Alternatives Policy) court case. She also reviewed the HFC phasedown from the amendment from Kigali. www.chemours.com [email protected]

Did you know that 45% of people watch more than an hour of Facebook or YouTube
videos per week? CHRIS MCCARTHY, Manager of Social Media & Member
Engagement with the American Chemical Society raised this interesting statistic
during his presentation “Science Communication on Social Media”. Chris’
presentation discussed how to use social media to effectively share scientific
information with non-experts. He reviewed each of the primary social media platforms
and discussed their applicability to scientific discussions. Chris also discussed shaping
the message based on the target demographics and platforms used by each user/viewer
segment. Chris gave several good examples of science advocacy via social media and
stressed how important it is for all of us to be actively engaged in monitoring comments about ourselves and our
businesses on social media.

GENE SANDERS, W.E. Train Consulting, spoke on Global Aerosol Transportation.
There are numerous organizations with multiple “rules” and “regulations” making shipping
very complicated. Gene suggests you always look at paper copy of regulations.

areas of product liability -- consumer, occupational and environmental. He detailed the
three parts of a toxic tort case -- liability, exposure and causation. Causation being the
battle ground for the case. He summarized when and how science can be used in a court
room and how it is accepted, or not, by a jury. For additional information, his complete
presentation is available in the Member’s Only section on the SATA website.

DAVE PASIN, President, TBF Environmental Technology Inc., charted the early days of the aerosol from ski wax to bug bombs to food. The global aerosol market is $68.76 billion USD in 2015. He talked about the aerosol market from personal care, foods, household, paints and automotive. Dave addressed concerns from the varying different regulatory agencies to how the aerosol works. Aerosols are a combination of physics and chemistry but still an inexact science. www.tbfenvironmental.com [email protected]
