Keeping It REAL

• On Saturday, I want to cook my family a big breakfast of toast, scrambled eggs and some bacon.• It takes me 3 minutes to make the toast• It takes 1 minute to break and whisk the eggs and then I need to put

them in the microwave for a further 3 minutes.• The grill takes 2 minutes to heat and bacon takes 4 minutes to cook

under the grill.• The breakfast takes me 1 minute to serve and a further 10 minutes to

eat.• Once I have eaten my breakfast I need to wash up which takes a further

2 minutes and then put the plates away which takes 2 minutes.•  Create a critical path analysis diagram and calculate the quickest time I

can take to make breakfast and clean up afterwards.

Board Room – ‘learn to’

• Arrange the classroom to represent two boardroom tables

• Assign a CEO for each table (the boards can compete)

• Provide a scenario for one of the ‘learn to’ points such as:

• recommend possible operations strategies for one hypothetical business

• recommend strategies to improve financial performance

• Let them go Keeping It REAL

Monopoly - Accounting

• Students play Monopoly

• They record every transaction according to the principles of double-entry accounting

• Revenue: Income from passing Go, rent received and prizes for coming second in the beauty competition

• Expenses: Rent paid, doctors’ fees, school fees and fines

• The net profit was calculated by taking expenses away from revenue

• This is all listed on the Revenue StatementKeeping It REAL

Monopoly - Accounting

• On the Balance Sheet the profit was categorised as capital.

• Liabilities: Any amounts owed to the bank due to mortgaged properties

• Assets: Property, houses, hotels and cash held

• For the Balance Sheet to actually balance: assets = liabilities + capital

• One major check at the end was seeing if the cash remaining did indeed match the calculation according to the recorded transactions

Scattergories - Revision

1. Download iPhone app ‘ Scattergories Timer & Dice’ (a student per group or just teacher) - If not using app, can use actual game dice or pick letters out of hat or teacher determines letter (just make sure they are letters that will produce many words)

2. Students need pens and paper (scrap paper is ideal) and be organised into groups of 4-6

3. Decide on categories (can pull out of hat to determine order, revealing as required, write on board) – the 4 HSC topics are ideal, or business names

4. Once the first category is announced, determine and state the letter (start the app, roll the dice, etc)

5. Start the timer (app does 1 min from the time the letter is revealed – recommend 1-2 mins)

6. At the end of the allotted time, students in their groups read aloud their words. Any words repeated by 2 or more in the group are crossed off. Any words remaining may be challenged by others in the group for authenticity and belonging to the category. Spelling isn’t important. Majority rules in determination.

7. Score for each student in each round is the number of unique words they have (they write number at top of list)

8. Repeat for another letter for the same category (up to 3 times in total) or move onto the next category

9. Winners can be determined for each category and in total.Keeping It REAL
