As 2020 stands at the threshold, I have to say that I am very positive about the year ahead. One of the key reasons being the very up-beat responses I received from operators and suppliers at the Vendex show held in Leeds at the end of October. I personally thought the new venue was a great choice. I met some very interesting people and saw some fantastic products.

Of course, when we look forward to a new year, we also look out for what are going to be the major business drivers. Inevitably focus around environmental matters will continue to feature and the whole NIVO team will be working with the AVA and key supply members to keep everyone in touch with developments. In addition, there is also a huge amount of activity around changes and developments with vending technology. Further legislation focused on financial regulation means that operators need to understand the implications as it pertains to cashless payments and associated telemetry. This is in addition to the technical developments in both hardware and software available to the vending industry. We have new players entering the market on an almost weekly basis and it can be a real challenge to keep up with the opportunities that this can bring to us. New operating systems and improvements in available support are yet another dimension. The whole topic can seem like a maze.

One thing that we are doing to help address all of this is to make the subject the central theme of our 2020 seminars. We are planning speakers and debates on the practical application of the various technological opportunities that exist so operators can make the best decisions. This in

turn will enable operators to offer customers the best and most appropriate options in the most cost effective and efficient way. We will, of course try to capture all of this information so that we can share it in the NIVO Insider, on our website and on social media platforms, but there is nothing quite like hearing it first time and first hand. Details of dates and venues for our 2020 seminars can be found inside our magazine and on the NIVO website. In essence we will have key speakers who will have both specific and overall insight into the options and issues that exist so we can discuss them in a practical way – taking into account the elements that are being imposed by the law. We look forward to seeing everyone very soon.

The third element demanding our attention in 2020 will probably also be one that has been a regular feature. That relates to healthy food and drink options. The available range of potential products increases daily and this again presents us with as many headaches as it does apparent solutions. The development of the Micro Market concept has also added to the levels of interest in a wide range of products. At NIVO we have access to an increasingly wide selection of chilled and frozen foods of very high quality. If anyone would like to know more about these options, please let me know.

As we put all these things together we add them to the continuing very positive attitude of customers to the world of coffee, 2020 can really be a year to remember.

LOOKING FORWARD TO IT

Michael LeviFor those of you who have not heard the news I am sorry and saddened to report of the untimely death of Michael Levi in October. Michael was best known for being the founder of NIVO, and also Bradford based vending operator, LTT Vending. Michael was a larger than life character who worked tirelessly in building both his business and reputation for excellent service. One memorable aspect of his personality is best highlighted by his response and attitude to a serious medical set back that he experienced around 15 years ago. Following a routine cataract operation, subsequent complications left him with very little sight. The impact on his life was undoubtedly significant. He could no longer drive or watch TV, he could not even read a newspaper – something he had previously done on a daily basis. Despite these experiences Michael never allowed this personal disaster to stop him. He found ways to continue to function normally, and many people had no idea that he even had any issues with his health. In the nearly 10 years that I worked with him I never heard him complain or sound sorry for himself – not even for a moment. Michael was a classy operator, a clever business man, and devoted to his family. He will be sorely missed by all.

VENDING IN THE News

– Golden Casket sweets brand Millions are planning on launching a range of sugar free water. There will be three flavours – strawberry, bubble-gum and apple and blackcurrant. These will be perfect for vending and will be sold in 500ml bottles.

– Sales at the newly combined Mars Wrigley Confectionary UK topped £1.1 billion last year despite the war on sugar. Renamed from Mars Chocolate UK in February 2018 the chocolate giant revealed growth of 31.9% on its 2017 accounts. The Malteasers brand grew by 21.3% year on year and is one example of how strong the company is at present.

– Hackney Council are the first in the UK to install a reverse vending machine on an estate. Residents of the Hoxton Estate will be able to get vouchers in exchange for recycled cans and plastic bottles. This is on top of Hackney Councils tree planting initiative and water fountain projects proving that the focus on a greener lifestyle is very much underway.

– Picture booth operator Photo-Me has promised to roll out fresh pineapple and apple juice vending machines to railway stations in the next two years as it looks for new revenue streams following a Brexit blow to its traditional business. Revenue from the business fell 3.8% in the five months to the end of September.

– Cornwall – Dairy farmer Gemma Smale-Rowland has set up a milk vending business. Cornish Moo is open 7 days a week and dispenses milk into litre or half litre glass bottles, which customers can then return and recycle.

– Kylie Jenner recently offered the media a tour of her lavish office, the 22 year old billionaire certainly knows how to splash the cash as it is packed with over the top features including a champagne vending machine!

The evening before Vendex North colleagues and friends enjoyed a fantastic meal at Bibis Italian Restaurant in Leeds. It was so lovely to see everyone in a more relaxed setting enjoying the wonderful food on offer. This was a chance for new connections to be made and old friends to catch up.

Vendex North was held at a new venue, The Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road Stadium. The feedback regarding the venue was positive and the staff there ensured that the day was executed perfectly. The team here at NIVO had a brilliant day, the atmosphere was buzzing and it was so lovely to see everyone within the industry. Each stand looked superb and very professional, there were lots of products on offer for us to sample and it was a perfect insight in to where the future of vending is headed.

Customers have indicated that they would like to make healthier choices when it comes to snacking and there was certainly plenty of products available to meet this demand. New products were unveiled from companies like Burt’s Snacks, Cofresh, Kellogg, Multiple Marketing and Pladis. Another focus was on recycling and the products and packaging available are certainly making huge steps in the right direction.

In summary Vendex North was a great business networking day and we would like to thank Phil and Jenny Reynolds for all the hard work put in to make it so. We are looking forward to seeing everyone at the next big vending event, details can be found on the back page of this edition of the Insider.

In case any of you think 25 years isn’t that long ago, just think back to what 1994 was like…

In the cinema, Pulp Fiction, Four Weddings and a Funeral and the original Lion King were released. Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and Yahoo was founded. Most people used dial-up online services like AOL where you paid for every minute you used – when it would work. There were no thumb drives or cloud storage. Instead, you backed up files on a floppy disk. Email was very expensive so in the office the fax machine was making that annoying screeching noise all day every day.

And finally there was no streaming or Netflix. In fact no DVDs either as they were introduced the following year. Instead you went to the video shop and hoped you didn’t get a copy that had been watched too many times and didn’t play properly

Vending however has been a constant throughout that time. The technology and look of the machines has developed considerably but the need has stayed the same. People have to eat and drink. And they have to work/go about daily life at the same time. The main difference is the non-food/promotional projects we now get involved in. The possibilities with these is endless.

“This is a significant milestone for any company” said ‘David Wood, CEO (known to many in the industry simply as ‘Woody’) we are proud to have been a consistent, trusted part of the industry for a quarter of a century. Thank you to everyone who

has supported Apogee over the years. Many of whom have been by the company’s side since day one. These include all our major suppliers and all our customers. Special mentions to Brian Savage of TVS for not only his continuous service support but also the advice and encouragement and Peter Quinney of Quintus Systems for giving us that first lead to get started.”

Lavazza: eco-friendly capsulesLavazza are hoping to attract customers who are focused on recyclable products with the launch of 100% compostable coffee capsules. The capsules will be making a debut across the Passionale, Qualita, Rossa, Lungo Dolce, Tierra Organic, Intenso, Delizioso and Dek Cremoso variants this month. It is hoped that the concept will then roll out across the entire range by the end of the year. This will be the first time that a major manufacturer has launched capsules that are compostable on such a scale, previously customers could only purchase such products from small, niche businesses. The new pods are made with an innovative material which bio degrades after 180 days if processed to become compost and the company partnered with TerraCycle for the launch. Lavazza have stated that the taste and quality of the coffee will not be altered as the pods will use

“aroma safe” technology to keep out oxygen and guarantee a perfect taste for the entire 18 month shelf life. The price for the capsules has not changed with this new move so customers will not be paying a premium for this eco-friendly move. A network of coffee capsule drop off points will be set up across the UK and customers will earn TerraCycle points based on the number of pods deposited, these can be found via an interactive map on the TerraCycle website:

Hertfordshire based vending company Apogee International Ltd celebrates 25 years in the industry this month. In theory that’s a long time but anyone in the industry knows that people rarely leave once they’re in it! Something I personally realised when recently congratulated (via a LinkedIn alert how else in 2019) on my 10 years with the business!

Plans are in place for a radical shake up of the VAT system to encourage consumers to make healthier choices when it comes to food shopping. This stems from Dame Sally Davies’ farewell report as chief medical officer.

Davies report calls on the government to conduct a review of VAT rates on food and drink once the UK leave the EU, a move which is hoped will rebalance the cost in favour of healthier products. One recommendation is to make all healthy food “zero VAT” and to have unhealthy foods VAT at a “super” rate to subsidise this. The report also lists what the CMO describes as “clear VAT anomalies”. These include products like mineral water, muesli bars and vitamins which can carry up to 20% VAT although products like salt, sugar and cakes are zero rated.

Although the suggestions from the CMO seem to be positive, these ideas have been explored before and dismissed for being too complicated. A review in 2010, conducted by tax experts, found that similar proposals would be much more complex than alternatives such as taxing tobacco or alcohol and stressed that the government would face backlash if they tried to change VAT whilst still in the EU. Reports also identified that classifying foods as healthy or unhealthy would be a mine-field and suggested moderate consumption of most foods was beneficial meaning there would be extreme difficulty of defining different categories. It is clear that changes need to be made and this would certainly have an effect on the vending industry. With a huge focus on healthier options being ever present it will be interesting to see how VAT evolves in the future and what this means for business moving forward.

Examples of VAT Anomalies on food and drink:

• Soft drinks are disastrous: milk is exempt but not water or fruit juice – unless it is drank over the course of a meal where VAT is then charged at 5%.

• As chocolate Nesquik contains cocoa butter, it is zero rated. Banana and strawberry Nesquik are not so fortunate.

• Breakfast cereals and muesli bars attract 20% VAT, but cereal bars and flapjacks are VAT free.

• A gingerbread man with chocolate eyes attracts zero VAT however, add some chocolate trousers and this is bumped up to 20%

• Chocolate coated biscuits carry 20% VAT but not chocolate chip cookies, as they are not coated. Chocolate coated Jaffa Cakes are cakes, and therefore exempt, as are marshmallow teacakes and edible cake decorations.

Can a change to VAT combat obesity?

Shoppers wantSustainability

The number of positive initiatives currently underway within the food industry certainly deserves applause and support. Examples of such initiatives are Unilever who have pledged to halve its use of plastic packaging, Tesco who will push for 100% renewable electricity and Waitrose who will be encouraging consumers to bring reusable containers to buy and refill produce. Research shows that consumers want to change their behaviours to be more environmentally aware and helpful to society, in fact 65% say that they hope to achieve a positive impact through everyday actions.

The vending industry is no different and we have seen plenty of initiatives launch in line with changing trends. Nestlé have given us the “YES!” bar with a paper wrapper that is fully recyclable, Lavazza have been working on eco-friendly pods that will be launched this month (see page 7), Coca Cola have a new advert campaign reminding customers that their packaging is recyclable (more on page 16) and both Aquacure and Dispo are offering sustainable and recyclable products (more on pages 9 and 11).

The gap between what is reported and the realistic be-haviours of customers on a daily basis has mostly been somewhat of a blocker to actual change within the industry, however this gap certainly seems to be reducing dramatical-ly. Research and data along with what shoppers are actually putting in their baskets suggests that customers hope their shopping experience combines healthier choices and sus-tainable packaging.

The internet is also a great tool for tracking consumer trends, searches for eco-friendly food packaging rose 112% between 2016 and 2019. Veganism is now the top interest on Google

when related back to food sustainability. Queries for locally sourced food grew 117% over the past 12 months and these are all indicators in the customers shift in the market. All of this information adds up to a picture of consumers who are very clear about the steps they want businesses to take. Embracing sustainable goods, produce and processes isn’t just a way to prove you are in with the “green” crowd, the moves businesses make now will undoubtedly translate to the bottom line. This is evident as sales for items with certain claims regarding sustainability grew faster than overall categories with a 5% rise, the growing number of sustainable initiatives show that the sector is responsive to the needs and wants of customers.

Overall the businesses who will benefit are those who can change their processes and operations quickest. This will be no easy task when you consider logistics, sourcing and stocking challenges however the positive impact will be well worth it. To stay ahead, keep listening to consumers as ultimately this is the most important factor for any businesses success.

Disgruntled workers have been sharing their most-loathed office-email phrases. The conversation features the likes of “per my last email”, “just checking in” and “moving forward”. The phrase “thanks in advance” was also hailed as one of the worst offenders, with some commenters suggesting it translates as: “I’m already thanking you for doing me this favour, even though you haven’t yet agreed to it.” Are there any other phrases that make you cringe when you see them in work emails? We should definitely think about this when speaking to colleagues and try to get out of any bad habits we may have – meaning we have a much happier working environment.

The most hated office email phrases

Aqua Cure are launching a filter recycling service for certain types of resin filter. Once the used filters are returned, all the useful components are recovered and the remaining plastic is turned into pellets ready to be reused for other plastic products. It’s a great way to protect the planet and boost your company’s environmental credentials. Aqua Cure are currently accepting all used Everpure Claris, Claris Ultra and ESO6 cartridges and may also be able to help recycle other manufacturer’s filters – please contact them to discuss this further at [email protected] or visit their website: www.aquacure.co.uk/recycle.

Bluetooth / Wifi Connected Digital Flow MeterAqua Cure have been having considerable success with trials of their new iMeter / iHub digital flow meters. The iMeter is a small, compact digital flow meter that relays filter capacity information to an app via Bluetooth while the optional iHub gives the user remote access to flow meter information online via the cloud. The iMeter and iHub can be retrofitted to existing filter installations and are perfect for monitoring your estate without ever having to visit site.

For more information on the water treatment solutions offered by Aqua Cure, please visit their website at www.aquacure.co.uk.

New Aqua Cure Filter Recycling ServiceAqua Cure are looking to make a real contribution to protecting the environment by introducing a new scheme to reduce plastic waste.

Dear Members

Another busy month with a great Vendex event in the mix. What did come further to the fore from the conversations and insights on the day, was the need to investigate and embrace micro markets and look at the cashless options available. We find that some forward thinking operators now have 60% of their machines going out with this option but this cannot be said for everyone. At NIVO we will be looking into this much deeper as we enter 2020 and this will be a focus at our seminars. We intend to debate the subjects with both our operators and suppliers to not only make sense of legislation and the solutions but to ensure we are all aware of the options available to us. We will have the help of the NIVO Approved Supply Members who deal in this area and we look forward to the first one on 25th February 2020.

One of my observations of 2019 is the increase in Whole Milk Powder & Skimmed Milk Powder in Germany, US and Oceania with prices up (annually) of between 37% and 40% (Clal.it). The reason for the hike in price is due to the public stocks in the European Union being used up. Another factor in the UK is due to the extension of the Brexit deadline. This has resulted in the weakening in the value of sterling. There has also been an import demand in China which grew 22% between January and June 2019 (dairy.ahdb.org.uk).

“The first AVA Futures meeting was a huge success and sets the stage for ensuring that our industry can continue to thrive in increasingly complex times,” says Kennedy Procter, the AVA’s Marketing & Communications Executive, who has been the architect of this new group.

“As AVA Futures network grows, it will be an ideal way to advance the skills and knowledge base of the ‘Next Generation’ of personnel within all AVA member organisations,” says David Llewellyn, Chief Executive of the AVA.

The group held its inaugural meeting prior to Vendex North, establishing its first project. They will focus on the growth of cashless payments and current unique requirements for vending applications. Other future topics include digital advertising, micro-markets, Apprenticeships and Graduate Schemes.

Getting involvedThe inaugural meeting was well attended, but every AVA Member company is eligible to join. Similar to other AVA Groups, AVA Futures will meet 2 to 3 times a year both in person or using web-based technology, conference calls and via digital channels. With professional development being a focus for the group, they are keen to build seminars and factory visits in to their meeting agendas.

Ideally, nominated members will have up to 5 years industry experience with a view to a leadership role in their organisation or a “next generation” employee in a family owned SME. Anyone interested in being a part of AVA Futures should contact Kennedy Proctor at the AVA.

AVA FUTURES GETS UNDERWAY

The Next Generation of vending industry leaders are making their voices heard through a new AVA group; AVA Futures brings together the vending professionals of tomorrow to share views and ideas, discuss key concepts and issues affecting the industry together with learning from established, successful businesses and industry experts.

The price of cocoa has soared globally and it looks like this will continue to climb despite a dampening in demand from both the USA and EU. Despite a continued effort and development towards sustainable products, consumer demand is diminishing in Europe and the US market is approaching saturation. New regulations from respective cocoa bodies in Ghana and the Ivory Coast have further supported price increases meaning prices look set to remain high as demand grows in Asia.

The lower margins for cocoa grinders along with weak consumer demand in European and American markets has meant that processing has been discouraged. As a result, grinding volumes in Asia have increased by around 8% annually compared with just 3% in Europe. EU volumes have been stable after four years of quarter 3 growth however the high prices are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Cocoa prices set to keep rising

The Equality Act 2010 outlaws several different forms of discrimination. While some of these can never be justified, others – namely indirect discrimination, discrimination arising from disability (section 15 discrimination) and direct age discrimination – can be justified in certain circumstances.

Indirect discrimination occurs when a company’s policies, procedures or rules which apply to everyone have the effect that people with a certain protected characteristic are put at a disadvantage when compared with those who do not share it.

Example: If you require employees to work full time, this may indirectly put female employees at a disadvantage, as it is more likely that they will be the primary carer of their children and may need to work part-time or flexibly. Other examples relate to dress codes and when workers are required to work.

Section 15 discrimination occurs when a person is treated unfavourably because of something arising as a consequence of their disability. No comparison with how others are treated is required in these cases. (Note: As with direct disability discrimination, an employer will only be held liable if they know – or ought to have known – of the worker’s disability).

Example: A common example would be dismissing an employee not because they are disabled but due to the long-term absence they have had as a result of their disability.

Direct age discrimination occurs when an employer treats a person less favourably because of their age than they would treat others.

Example: If an employer were to have a policy that only candidates aged 20 to 35 could apply for a position, this would be treating those outside that age group less favourably than those within it on the basis of their age.

NB: Direct age discrimination is the only form of direct discrimination that can be justified.

How to establish a legal defenceIn each of the above cases, the employer will have discriminated against the employee, unless they are able to justify the treatment. Indirect, section 15 and direct age discrimination have the same definition of when such discrimination can be justified.

Namely, it is down to employers to persuade a Tribunal that:

• The provision, criterion or practice (PCP) or treatment was in pursuance of, and capable of meeting, a legitimate aim.

Unfortunately, there is no definition of what this means, and it will be for a Tribunal to decide if an employer’s stated aim is indeed legitimate.

• In relation to disability-related sickness absence, case law suggests that ensuring adequate attendance levels and seeking to improve attendance are legitimate aims. However, issuing a warning after 60 days of sickness absence was found not to be a proportionate means of meeting it.

• With regards to direct age discrimination, the Equal Treatment Directive 2000 states that an aim will only be legitimate if it relates to “employment policy, the labour market or vocational training” and not “purely individual reasons particular to the employer’s situation, such as cost reduction or improving competitiveness.”

• When balanced against the discriminatory effect, the PCP or treatment was a proportionate means of meeting that aim.

This part of the justification defence can be very difficult to predict, particularly when dealing with disability-related sickness absence, which often comes down to the question of where an employer can draw the line and issue a warning in respect of disability-related absences.

When considering proportionality, a Tribunal will look at how many people in a protected group are adversely affected by the PCP or treatment (when looking at indirect and direct age discrimination) and how severe that is (also in respect of section 15 discrimination). Where the discriminatory effect is particularly severe, the PCP or treatment is less likely to be proportionate.

A Tribunal will also consider:

• Whether there were less discriminatory ways of achieving the legitimate aim.

• Whether any reasonable adjustments could have been implemented before taking action that could be d iscriminatory.

If so, it will be difficult for the employer to argue that the steps taken were proportionate.

Quick…Fairtrade Premium: Over and above the Fairtrade price, the Fairtrade Premium is an additional sum of money which goes into a communal fund for workers and farmers to use – as they see fit – to improve their social, economic and environmental conditions.

The UK and our obesity issue: Around 30% of the population in England are now obese and this is adding to the pressure that the NHS faces. This number has doubled over the past 20 years, with the number of people who are obese topped 10 million for the first time in 2008. Research indicates that customers want healthier options and manufacturers are certainly ensuring products are on offer.

Diversity is key: Employers won’t improve diversity on their teams if they keep looking for candidates in the same places or getting referrals from the same people, recruitment experts have told the Financial Times. Nikos Moraitakis of recruitment firm Workable advised hiring managers to “open up your world”, and seek out meetups of diverse communities. Employers who attend, talk at or sponsor these events will gain access to a whole new talent pool. He said companies can also secure a more diverse set of applicants by advertising vacancies on both job sites and social media sites.

IVS Italia joins the EVA: IVS is one of the largest vending operators in Italy. It has over 60 branches and is the second largest in Europe with a prominent presence in Spain, Switzerland and France. The IVS has now joined the EVA as a direct member and it is hoped that this will strengthen the current needs of the industry.

Coca-Cola’s aim to recycle more: Coca-Cola GB have launched a major new advertising campaign. It is called “Round in Circles” and is aimed at reminding customers that all of its bottles and cans can be recycled and turned in to new packaging.

Plant Power: A plant-based hierarchy is emerging and Nestlé is positioning itself to be the global frontrunner. The last two years have seen the company carve out some major space in the ever growing meat-free sector. More and more customers are seeking out tasty and nutritious plant based options when food shopping and Nestlé will continue to invest and innovate across a range of categories.

Healthier approaches to food on the go: The Vending people have released 2019 statistics revealing that 42% of the market is dominated by ZERO sugar drinks, this is up by 33.6% for the previous year. Snacking trends reveal that healthier snack options grew annually by 16%. The Evolution of Snacking campaign aims to help consumers make the transition to healthier choices.

Double Award for Tower Leasing: Tower Leasing are certainly celebrating after the AVS Annual Conference 2019, they walked away with two AVS awards – Best Support Service 2019 and Best Customer Service – Individual – Kevin Reed.

Coffee Cup Drop BoxThe ideal solution to ensure your used paper vending cups are recycled.

Developed jointly with DS Smith, who operate the largest paper mill in the UK, and accepts used paper cups.

Flexible and simple to use, recycling your used paper vending cups has never been easier.

To start using the Coffee Cup Drop Box your first need to set up your details on the DS Smith e-Pack web-shop, and then you can begin ordering the box.

The Drop Box can be accessed here

www.dssmithepack.co.uk/cardboard-boxes/coffee-cup-recycling-box.

Each Drop Box cost £15, with a minimum order of 6 boxes. This is an all-inclusive charge, covering deliver, and collection of the filled box, and recycling – so there is nothing further to pay.

Each Drop Box will hold 700 cups, so that is the equivalent of 2p per cup to ensure it is recycled.

The Drop Box will be delivered to you “flat-packed”, in a case with the components for all 6 boxes, and instructions on how to put the box together, there is even a video of “how to” on the DS Smith website

It is possible to use the Drop Box across multiple sites having registered a main address. This will allow full boxes to be collected direct from the using site. Once two boxes are full a call or e.mail to DS Smith to arrange for collection by Royal Mail Relay will get the boxes picked up and taken directly to the paper mill.

DS Smith own a network of paper mills around the world. They recycle over 5.5 million tonnes of paper & cardboard each year, and the mill in Kent is the largest mill in the UK. In 2017 they announced they have enough capacity at the Kent mill to recycle used coffee cups. The Coffee Cup Drop Boxes have been designed so that they can be bulked up at the recycling depot which is attached to the mill, and recycled, box and all. That means that they can guarantee that they are recycled in the UK. It also means that the Crop

Box itself is a true closed loop product as it is manufactured by the DS Smith packaging plant, from paper from the mill in Kent.

Unfortunately, it is not possible to accept heavily contaminated boxes. If a small amount of coffee slops seep into the cardboard then it will be OK, but users should ensure used cups are drained of any residual liquid. If a box is obviously heavily contaminated then Royal Mail Relay drivers will not accept the box. In this circumstance the operator or customer will need to remove the contamination from the box or dispose of the cups in the general waste.

At the paper mill the Drop Boxes will be consolidated to make up a 1 tonne load (circa 100 Drop Boxes). At this point they will be baled (box and all), and taken to one of the stock preparation lines to be pulped. The fibre produced will be used to make packaging grade paper which will be used for making new e-commerce packaging such as the Coffee Cup Drop Box itself – a truly circular solution!
