Current Situation in UK
•
If wound healing problems account for 5%
health care spend –why
does the subject not have a high profile ?
•
Wound problems exist in all aspects of clinical practice but there is no consistency or standardisation of approach to care
“Health & Wealth for Wales”
Resource Utilisation•
In a typical acute hospital, between 25% and 40%
of beds are occupied by patients
with a wound
•
In the community 25-75%
of nurse time is spent on wound related care, with 70%
of
all wounds being treated in this setting
•
Demographic changes will increase the demand for wound care at a time when nursing and hospital resources are likely to be increasingly scarce
“Health & Wealth for Wales”
Pressure ulcers•
A recent EPUAP study of 25 hospitals in 5 European countries found prevalence of pressure ulcers of 20% -
in the UK, the
rate was 22% PEPUS Study
•
This means around 1 in 5 hospital beds is occupied by a patient with a pressure ulcer
•
Typically, 60%-80% of these pressure ulcers are hospital-acquired
•
Between 30%-35% of pressure ulcers are at Stage 3 or above
“Health & Wealth for Wales”
•
9%
of hospital inpatients at any one time will acquire an infection during their stay
•
There are at least 100,000
HAI a year
•
5,000
deaths a year
•
Financial impact1. Auditor General (2000) the management and control of Hospital Acquired Infection in
Acute NHS in England.2. DOH CMO (England) (2002) Getting ahead of the curve

The Impact of Healthcare Associated Infection (HCAI)
“Health & Wealth for Wales”
Surgical wound infection•
A typical hospital carrying out
13,500 at-risk operations annually can expect 525-650 surgical infections, at a cost of £2m
and
5,200
excess bed-days•
Increased LOS = 9 days
•
Reducing the rate of infection by just 10% could release £200k and 500+ bed-days
“Health & Wealth for Wales”
Are the research questions always focused in the right area?
Materials: Typically 10%-
15% of total cost
Nurse Time: Typically 25%-
30% of total cost
Hospitalisation: Typically 50%+ of total cost

Key Facts•
Wound healing employs around 2500 people in Wales
•
With approximately a further 100 academic researchers and full-time specialist nurses
•
Commercial turnover in excess of £70 million annually
•
These incomes should be set in the context of the total spend on wound healing in Wales which is likely to be around £156 million annually.

“Health & Wealth for Wales”
Welsh Established –
Welsh Driven - Internationally Recognised
•
NHS of Wales would be part of this initiative driving standardisation
of wound practice across Wales.
•
Other Welsh HEIs
have expressed interest in the concept and being involved.
•
Industry has also expressed interest in being part of this initiative locating facilities within the Science Park.
•
Further Welsh based companies have been identified as the first route to market for the many products that could emerge from the multiple organisations.
•
This would strengthen the opportunity of the output of the WWISP obtaining larger global deals with major International companies, as the concepts would not only be clinically and scientifically validated but also test marketed.
