COMMUNITY 2 THE NATIONAL HERALD, MARCH 23-29, 2013 GOINGS ON... TNH Staff NEW YORK – Although not all Orthodox Christians look for- ward to Lent, many just can’t wait for the annual Kathara Deftera reception and dinner that benefits the Gennadius Li- brary of the American School of Classical Studies in Athens. The event was hosted on March 18 by the Library’s Board of Overseers and the food pre- sented at the Kellari Taverna by Chef Gregory Zapantis was Lent-appropriate. Guests were greeted and thanked by the Board’s chair- man, Alexander Zagoreos, and Maria Georgopoulou, the Direc- tor of the Library, spoke briefly about the Library and remark- able programs and collections. She summed up the spirit of the evening when she said “fast- ing in Greece is still coming to- gether and feasting,” but she also made a point of inviting the guests to visit Greece and noted that for their parts, the Library and the ASCSA are “proud to serve Greece any way we can.” Georgopoulou spoke to TNH about the importance of fundraising outside Greece, es- pecially in light of the Greek cri- sis. The plight of Greece and Cyprus was on the minds of the guests, which included John Calamos, a noted money man- ager, and his wife, Mae. He told TNH that one of the ways the Diaspora could help build a new Greece is by offering financial support and guidance to young entrepreneurs. The guests’ palates were first greeted – after wine and cham- pagne was offered of course – by wonderful lagana flatbread and jumbo shrimp, but the food never stopped coming, includ- ing “horta” that melted in the mouths of the guests. More than one noted he would be happy to “fast” this way all the time. The evening’s guests included Ambassador Loucas Tsillas, Ex- ecutive Director of the Onassis Foundation (USA) and his wife Penny, Sotirios Vahaviolos scien- tist and founder and CEO of Mis- tras Group, a New York Stock Exchange-listed company and his wife Aspasia the consuls gen- eral of Greece and Cyprus re- spectively, George Iliopoulos and Koula Sophianou, and Ted and Elaine Athanassiades.
