Since 2002, the partnership of the state government and Queensland University of Technology has developed the creative precinct in the heart of Kelvin Grove, only two kilometres from Brisbane’s CBD. The village integrates an array of business, educational, residential, health and recreational assets, which particularly attract young students and professionals, in the current population shift to south-east Queensland. Social Sustainability The village’s diverse range of educational facilities and organisations develops community relationships and a framework for social sustainability. “The atmosphere of the Kelvin Grove Urban Village is modern and dynamic. The village is bustling with young students, which gives off energising vibes!” stated Eloise, QUT student. The village develops bonds between social classes and cultures. Residents are exposed to recreational facilities, with accessible attractions such as Victoria Park, Suncorp Stadium and Roma Street Parklands. Kelvin Grove Urban Village, originally developed by the Australian Army in 1910 as the Gona Barracks, continues to preserve monuments of historical significance. With religious services such as City Life Christian Church, Ithaca Presbyterian Church and QUT Chaplaincy Service, which offers quiet prayer, worship and spiritual and ethical discussion, the village promotes diversity. Kelvin Grove, with a high degree of self-containment, is envisaged with economic sustainability through housing and employment opportunities, the use of resources and transport and an adaptable neighbourhood structure. More than 1,000 residential units are available, with 456 beds for student accommodation. QUT’s Health Clinics

Ranging from The Creative Industries Enterprise Centre and The Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation to cafes and boutiques, employment opportunities peak in the community hub of the village. Kelvin Grove is home to Creative Enterprise Australia, which assists developing businesses with networking, internships and research. The precinct supports self-promotion and advertising, with Australia’s largest billboard, interactive exhibitions and festivals!

The village was designed to draw a connection between Kelvin Grove’s housing, businesses and educational facilities, with surrounding suburbs and the CBD, through a direct transporting network.

The precinct provides regraded roads to minimise slopes for wheelchair access, wide footpaths and on and off-road cycle. There is a growing network of bicycle paths and laneways, with “CityCycle,” a community bicycle hire scheme. Kelvin Grove Road integrates a public transport network for economic and environmental sustainability. The Busway through the CBD and northern suburbs is connected to Kelvin Grove, with QUT providing 391, a free inter-campus shuttle bus for students and lecturers.

Environmental Sustainability

Kelvin Grove Urban Village practises the principles of Ecological Sustainable Development, creating a model for future developments. Water Sensitive Urban Design was implemented into the master-plan of the village, with the recycling of stormwater, permeable pavement and bioretention systems. The predominance of parks with native trees and vegetation within the development, contribute to the biodiversity and aesthetic landscaping of the village.
