WHAT WILL STUDENTS WORK ON IN DECEMBER?

PTA Hello KMES families! Our school’s

Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is

working hard this year to support

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION at Kemp

Mill.

If you missed the December meeting,

we hope to see you Tuesday, February 6

at 6:30pm at school. The meeting will

open with the student Instrumental

Music winter concert! Then, we’ll

discuss goals and plans for the February

fundraiser. KMES students have already

benefitted this school year from PTA

funding: field trip buses, field trips

admission fees for every student,

assemblies, materials and resource

programs for the classroom, art for the

newly renovated media center, and

more! This year, we plan to also fund:

buses for after school programs, STEM

night, science day, events to show our

school staff we appreciate them, family

dances, multicultural night, 5th grade

graduation events, and more!

Fifth grade will be working on the following in January: math: Students will continue exploring fractions and further understanding the relationship between the numerator and denominator. Students will be adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. As always dunes will continue working on multiplying multidigit numbers. Reading: students will begin comparing literature text and comparing informational texts referencing key details, point of view, text structure and main ideas. Writing: students will finish up their wax museum biographical investigations with a research essay, speech and performance. The final wax museum performance is to be announced, will be at the end of the month. Social Studies: students will be researching and learning about civics and the three branches of government. United States government is an equal power system of democracy and students will learn how each operates in order to form laws. Students will then form their own fifth grade congress and create their own laws. Mr. Amaya

STEM

January brings the end to Marking Period 2 in the STEM Lab, but also a new piece of technology! We are very happy to announce that through the donations of some generous hearts, there will be a NEW 3D printer in the STEM Lab this month. Miss Ramirez cannot wait to explore this cutting edge technology with your students. Don’t forget, STEM Night is January 24 from 6:00-8:00, see you there! Ms. Ramirez

Media Center Have you seen the new Digital Citizenship icon on our school’s webpage? This new MCPS initiative has been launched this year “to empower students to think critically, behave safely, and participate responsibly with technology” when using electronic devices, both at home and at school. In the roll out of this curriculum, 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders in all elementary schools will receive a minimum of 3 lessons on digital citizenship this school year. These lessons lead to wonderful discussions! In the media center, we have been enjoying the thought-provoking questions and activities that are designed by Common Sense Education, the resource that is providing the materials for this program. Ask your 3rd, 4th, or 5th grader about the lessons we’ve been doing in the media center. Families can access many great resources on digital citizenship, too, by clicking on the Digital Citizenship icon on the KMES webpage. Continue those great discussions at home! Kindergarten through 2nd grade students will begin the program next year, 2018 - 2019, but feel free to take advantage of the resources on the website now! Ms. Eppes

In reading, students will read informational texts to determine the focus of specific paragraphs in order to identify the main topic, or if able the main idea of the texts. In writing, students are participating in shared research to retell an original version of a traditional story. In math, students developing fluency with addition and subtraction within 100. As students develop proficiency with different types of problems, they may need to move back and forth among concrete, pictorial, and abstract representations and students will examine money and learn about coins and bills In science, students will identify and describe structures of objects too small to be seen clearly with the unaided eye. In social studies, students will analyze elements of two different cultures and how each meets their human needs and contributes to the community. Ms. Dominguez

Hola familias de KMES! La Asociación de

Padres y Maestros (PTA) de nuestra

escuela está trabajando arduamente este

año para apoyar EXCELENCIA EN LA

EDUCACIÓN en Kemp Mill.

Si se perdió la reunión de Diciembre,

esperamos verle el Martes, 6 de Febrero a

las 6:30 p.m. en la escuela. ¡La reunión se

abrirá con un concierto de Música

Instrumental estudiantil! Luego,

discutiremos las metas y los planes para

la recaudación de fondos de Febrero. Los

estudiantes de KMES ya se han

beneficiado este año escolar de los

fondos del PTA: autobuses de

excursiones, aranceles de admisión para

cada estudiante, asambleas, materiales y

programas de recursos para el aula, arte

para el centro de medios recientemente

renovado y más. Este año, planeamos

también financiar: autobuses para

programas después de la escuela, noche

de STEM, día de ciencias, eventos para

mostrarle a nuestro personal de la

escuela que los apreciamos, bailes

familiares, noches multiculturales,

eventos de graduación de 5to grado y

más.

Los estudiantes agregarán y restarán fracciones con denominadores diferentes. Como siempre, continuaremos trabajando multiplicando números de múltiples dígitos. Lectura: los estudiantes comenzarán a comparar el texto de la literatura con textos informativos que hacen referencia a los detalles clave, el punto de vista, la estructura del texto y las ideas principales. Escritura: los estudiantes terminarán sus investigaciones biográficas del museo de cera con un ensayo de investigación, discurso y actuación. La presentación final del museo de cera se anunciará, será a fin de mes. Estudios sociales: los estudiantes investigarán y aprenderán sobre educación cívica y las tres ramas del gobierno. Media Center

Ha visto la nueva imagen de Ciudadanía Digital en la página web de nuestra escuela? Esta nueva iniciativa de MCPS se lanzó este año "para educar a los estudiantes a pensar críticamente, comportarse de forma segura y participar de manera responsable con la tecnología" al usar dispositivos electrónicos, tanto en el hogar como en la escuela. En la implementación de este plan de estudios, los estudiantes de 3º, 4º y 5º grado en todas las escuelas primarias recibirán un mínimo de 3 lecciones sobre ciudadanía digital este año escolar. ¡Estas lecciones conducen a discusiones maravillosas! En la biblioteca, hemos estado disfrutando las preguntas y actividades que invitan a la reflexión y que están diseñadas por una Educación de Sentido Común, el recurso que proporciona los materiales para este programa. Pregúntele a su hijos de 3er, 4t° o 5t° grado sobre las lecciones que hemos estado haciendo en la biblioteca. Las familias también pueden acceder a muchos recursos excelentes sobre ciudadanía digital haciendo clic en la imagen de Ciudadanía digital en la página web de KMES. ¡Continúen esas grandes discusiones en casa! Enero trae el final del trimestre 2 en el Laboratorio STEM, pero también una nueva pieza de tecnología! Estamos muy contentos de anunciar que a través de las donaciones de algunos corazones generosos, habrá una NUEVA impresora 3D en el Laboratorio STEM este mes. La señorita Ramirez no puede esperar para explorar esta tecnología de vanguardia con sus estudiantes. No lo olvide, STEM Night es el 24 de Enero de 6:00 a 8:00, nos vemos allí!
