KenCada Academy and DBR present an International Ideas Competition inviting Kenyan and International designers to give the students of KenCada International Academy a new place to learn and grow.

The environment of a learning space has great effect on the growth, focus and emotions of a student. An effective learning space has the potential to dynamically influence student learning, as opposed to passively providing a venue for it. Through a flexible, thoughtful design, the building will be a teacher in itself.

The KenCada International Academy was founded on the conviction that the best of Kenyan education and international 21st Century learning is urgently needed and should be made accessible to all Kenyan children. The challenge is to design a new campus for KenCada that will serve as a learning space for its students. Designs should be mindful of the school’s locality, and seek to engage the community it inhabits. Local materials unique to the Swahili Coast should also be celebrated. A balance of modernity and local vernacular traditions would be ideal.

PROGRAM Participants will be challenged to design a school, and the focus should be on the experience of the students and the teachers alike. The KenCada educational approach focuses largely on the facilitation of experiential and play-based learning by its students, as well as the development of a collaborative and open environment for its teachers. KenCada rejects the traditional method of linear teaching with the instructor as the sole source of knowledge, favouring a student centered approach.

KenCada intends to expand its cohort to an initial number of 236 students. Government regulations stipulate that every learning space for a class should have at least 0.5 m2 per student. The minimum number of students in each grade will follow the following matrix:

Baby Class Level 1 16Baby Class Level 2 16KG 1 20KG 2 20KG 3 20Standard 1 24Standard 2 24Standard 3 24Standard 4 24Standard 5 24Standard 6 24Total 236

The Baby and KG Classes are required to be spatially divided or separated from the Standard Classes, due to age and maturity differences.

OVERVIEW

DESIGN GUIDELINES Solutions should address the typical weather conditions of Mombasa. Floodwater flow and rainwater collection should be managed in the design. Weatherproofing of the structure is necessary. An independent solar power source to minimize disruptions to the learning of the KenCada students should be included.

The site has potential to build up to 3 stories to maximize students and small land space.

CORE VALUES

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT Utilizing local materials and creating involvement within the community.

ACTIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENT Learning spaces should be able to be reconfigured to various teaching styles and student needs. Flexibiility is key.

CULTURAL RELEVANCE The design must celebrate and reflect the Kenyan culture, a balance of modernity and tradition.

NATURAL LIGHTING + VENTILATION Cooling passive ventilation and access to natural light within the interior is desired.

MODULARITY A design that could be adapted easily to different site conditions and varying programs. With consideration to growth over time.

COST EFFICIENT Practicality and innovation with consideration to a modest budget.

INTERIOR

• A minimum of 12 learning spaces to accomodate 236 students and 11 teachers, in total. Learning spaces should be compatible with educational technology.

• Common space for learning and assemblies. Library commons and distributed shelf/computer stations.

• Maker spaces to be considered for storytelling, ideation, fabrication, computational, woodworking, and more.

• Prayer rooms

• Administrative offices for Head Teacher and Secretary

• Conference room

• Staff resource room

• Multiple washrooms, 8 stalls required

• Security room

EXTERIOR

• Outdoor or rooftop play area with equipment.

• Cooking kitchen building with storage that is separate from the main school building.

• Communal eating area with partially covered roof for 60 students.

• Security is vital. Compound should be walled with guard and guarded entrance.

• Garden, living walls, and/or swimming pool

THE CITY Mombasa, Mombasa County, Kenya

Mombasa is the second-biggest city in Kenya, located on the Swahili Coast. It is a major cultural hub and the only large seaport in Kenya. The residents of Mombasa were traditionally traders and skilled craftsmen who settled in this historical trading centre on the Indian Ocean.

Mombasa has a tropical wet and dry climate. The wet season in June to August brings tremendous amounts of rain and winds from the southeast. Schools often close due to flooding during this time, and power outages are frequent. The warm and dry season from December to February sees high temperatures of 28-32oC, and winds from the northeast.

CONTEXT

THE SITE Bamburi, North of Mombasa, Kenya

Site dimensions: 150m x 100m

Maximum number of storeys: 3

The site will be located in an urban sprawl area of Bamburi, north of Mombasa, near some residential homes already built. The neighbourhood is a largely upper middle class area. The site is a topographically flat field. Small scrub vegetation can be found in abundance, but no trees are located on site. Dirt roads currently lead to this area of Mombasa, and no services are provided, but infrastructure may be improved in the future.

Urko Sánchez Principal and Founder, Urko Sánchez Architects

Born and raised in Madrid, Spain, Urko Sánchez began his architectural studies in 1988. It took him 10 years to complete his coursework because of a huge passion for travel. Consequently, travel has informed much of his life and his work – all of the colors and art and people and cultures he’s been exposed to adding to a sense of what Urko wanted to build for himself and others. The award-winning firm of Urko Sánchez Architects are based in Kenya and Spain, but have undertaken projects throughout Eastern Africa (Djibouti, Somalia) and further afield (Angola, Bosnia, Germany, Spain). Hallmarks of Urko Sánchez projects include contemporary twists on traditional architecture; a green aesthetic that harnesses wind and solar power and recycled water; and leveraging natural architecture to showcase natural light, and frame private gardens and open courtyards.

DBR is a non-profit institute founded to offer a new model for design education and research. Our school is dedicated to teaching the design and construction of socially, culturally and environmentally relevant student-led installations. DBR also offers a research platform with a focus in systemic change in building for climate, environment, disaster and global shelter needs.

DBR was founded in Spring 2014 by architect Michael Green, leading structural engineer Eric Karsh and social entrepreneur Scott Hawthorn.

DBR is founded on the idea that every kid in grade six knows how to draw and build. By grade 10 only half of the students in a class will raise their hand and say they have those skills. By grade 12, only a small handful feel they have the art and design skills and talent to pursue a design career in particular. We believe design skills should not only scale to design professions, but also lead to design thinking in other professions. Empowering students to bring ideas into reality through building is fundamental.

Our ambition is to encourage a generation of designers, builders and mentors across all age groups. It is the tradition of the design professions to pass our skills from generation to generation. DBR was founded to champion that tradition in a new model of teaching.

The DBR program brings young kids and old into the design and construction process and helps them maintain their curiosity in the built environment as they grow. By engaging students in community based projects they learn life skills; from hands-on design and building to leadership, teamwork and ultimately the importance of lifelong mentorship and community contribution.
