FOREWORD

Having read the following so called " rhyming gene-alogy" with much interest, owing to its quaint style

and the historical value contained therein, and uponcloser investigation discovering its extreme rarity, it

was deemed advisable to reprint it, adding such dataas applied to Jesse^ Kendall and his descendants. Thisadditional data has been collected from various sourcesbut more especially from the living members of thefamily.

An elaborate or scholarly work is not intended butrather a key for those who may be interested in this

family.

Honorable mention with appreciation is hereby ex-tended to those who so gladly assisted in this work, butby their own most earnest wish their names are not to bementioned here.

Irma a. Rich.

KENDALL GENEALOGYWritten in 1855

Having copied the records collected by Calvin, tenth

child of Jesse, I have arranged them in rhyme. It mayassist the memory in retaining the dates if any one should

wish to remember them. Arranged by ANSTIS KEN-DALL MILES, daughter of Calvin and Abigail B. Kendall.

Oppression sent forth from the far British Isle,

Her noblest of sons to this land of exile.

From Westmoreland county in England they came. From a town which still bears the old family name.

Frank and Thomas from England who secretly fled,

And sought Charlestown for their fortune and bread,

Which, finding too large, or the people too few.

Cut a slice and made Woburn, Sixteen forty two.

When to settle the town the Commissioners met,

At one of their houses, this grave body set

December eighteen, new style, Twenty eight,

Sixteen hundred forty, commenced their debate.

Francis Kendall, to make his retreat more secure,

Was called Francis Miles, a while to be sure,

Thou^ from what we can learn was an excellent man,'Tis late in the day now to censure his plan.

The Commissioners number'd, when all counted, seven,

To whom was intrusted and full power given

To make rules and orders for all to subscribe.

And obey, who came into their town to abide.

6 KENDALL GENEALOGY

And when the Commissioners' session was through,And all signed their names, there were found Thirty two,

And the next thing we hear that this same Francis did,

Was to drop off the "Miles" and take home Mary Tidd.

Not exactly at Christmas, but one day before,

He took Mary his wife. Sixteen forty four.

But Thomas, you say. Oh what of his fate?

Did he marry:' O yes, and had daughters eight,

Who grew up and married, as good daughters should.

Thus the family name lost its hold on the blood.

Though 'tis said that a daughter retained her own name.If her husband assumed it, no one was to blame.

This Thomas he married Rebecca, 'tis said.

And settled in Reading and Deacon was made. But Francis in Woburn built the first Mill,

And the wheel, where he started is running there still.

Though the history of Francis I fully shall tell,

Yet to speak of his brother is all very well,

Still Francis and Mary had better success.

If having four sons and five daughters can bless.

John first, Thomas second, Mary third, Lizzie fourth,

And Hannah the middle and fifth one of course,

Rebecca and Samuel, and these are not all.

Then Jacob and Abby, a number not small.

(End of Francis, the first settler, nine children.)

With Thomas, the second of Francis, I go.

Whose wife was named Ruth, what else I don't know,But married they were in Sixteen seventy three,

And the names of their children are arranged as you see.

A daughter named first for her mother was Ruth,Thomas, Mary and Samuel, from the good book of truth,

Ralph and Eleazer follow close in the train.

Then two came together called Jabez and Jane,

Last an infant who died with its mother, sans name.(End of Thomas, son of Francis, nine children.)

KENDALL GENEALOGY 7

To Samuel, the fourth child of Thomas, I come,Who still made the town of Woburn his home.

Whose wife was Elizabeth, alas ! all I know. For the record is brief as the copy will show.

He shared in the fame that attended his day.

Was commissioned Lieutenant by "Belcher" they say,

Who governed the State in Seventeen thirty two,'Twas a colony then, under England 'tis true.

A dealer in land and a house could erect.

Enterprising and honest was held in respect.

And oft served the public in various ways. And his acts left recorded with merited praise.

He held land in Townsend, in the grant was a flaw.

Which Hathorne, of Salem, contended in law,

(In his grant was included) with some heat and fury,

Which was finally settled by twelve men as a jury.

Honor, children and land, what can I say more.Died December thirteen. Seventeen sixty four,

He bought land in Athol, in "Indian Pequoage,"Where he settled two sons, one a miller by trade.

His family next in the catalogue seen.

Show the number of sons and daughters fifteen,

And Samuel the oldest, I think was a preacher,

James, Josiah and Ezekiel, I know nothing of either.

Timothy, and Lizzie who by some was called Bessie,

Jonas, Sarah, Susanna, Obadiah and Jesse,

Seth, Abigail, Ephraim, Jerusha. Well done!I pity the couple who labor for one.

(End of Samuel, son of Thomas who was son of Francis.)

Now Jesse, eleventh of Samuel, I'll show.Whose wife was Elizabeth Evans I know.

He moved to "Pequoage" and Uved near the river,

Now Athol, for the Kendalls are millers forever.

He dug a canal, took the water away,Which moves much mechanical business to-day.

And built the first mill to grind corn and wheat,Rye, barley and oats, for the people to eat.

He owned a good farm, which he cleared up with care.

And contended for crops with the * flood and the bear.

And the men of the forest, being loth to depart, [heart.

Shot their arrows of vengeance, but ne'er reached his

He was honest in toil, was constant to meeting.

And the brethren united and made him a Deacon,Yet at this distant day, it seems rather odd.

That they carried their guns to the house of their God.

The scripture injunction they fully obeyed.

And some watched without while the minister prayed.

'Twas the war with the French that kindled their ire,

To murder and steal and burn up with fire.

How little we think what our fathers went through.

As we till the green fields that they strove to subdue.

E'en my father, when young, caught a cub by the way. When going to meeting one fine sabbath day.

This Jesse a patriarch was in his day.

Had twelve sons and daughters, all handsome and gay,

Elizabeth, born Seventeen fifty one.

Seventeen fifty three then a Mary had come.

Then Jesse was born Seventeen fifty six,

And Hannah fifty seven, for she came rather quick,

Then sixty brought Olive, and then in two years,

Joel came, (Sixty two,) as the record appears.

Then Samuel was born Seventeen sixty four,

And Andrew, the eighth. Sixty six and no more.

Then David, the ninth, was born Sixty eight.

And Seventy brought Calvin, my father I'll state.

*N0TE.—The record says he sufifered much from floods, but does not state in whatmanner. It might mean the dam, or as some of his land laid low it might have been

at times inundated.

KENDALL GENEALOGY 9

Thus having five sons in ten years it is true,

Came a daughter named Lois, Seventeen seventy two,

Then Anna came last, Seventeen seventy five.

Which closes the list, now not one is alive.

(Who the children of Jesse and Elizabeth married.)

Elizabeth married, as 'twas proper and fit,

Peleg Stratton, a teamster, who was noted for wit.

Two daughters they had, and sons they had nine,

One less than her mother, but still very fine.

Mary married one Jacob, whose surname was Rich,

A tanner or farmer I cannot tell which.

Their children increased to the number of eleven.

And plenty of bread to sustain them was given.

Next, Jesse, who married a Raymond they say,

And bore to his home on a pillion one day.

To Phillipston (now) and raised children ten.

There were five married daughters and five grew to men.

To his wedding invited, a large party went.To old Parson Humphrey's to see the event.

Still some were left out, who wished to be there.

The return of the party was watched with great care.

The party on horseback arranged to ride double,

From the Parson's to Gerry, not thinking of trouble,

One man it is true, a mischievous wight,

Left his girl on the horse-block to pay for a slight.

The evening was dark when the party came back.

And the rogues uninvited, obstructed their tract,

Dire noises they made with tin pans and old bells.

And with pumpkin stalk fifes and hideous yells.

Hannah wed Reuben Graves, and had daughters four,

Then married a Marsh, had two sons and two more. Her home made in Chesterfield, her daughters were fair

She managed her household with wisdom and care.

10 KENDALL GENEALOGY

Olive married a Graves but not Reuben's brother.

His name was Eleazer and son they'd no other,

Their children were few, all told half a dozen,

Eleazer, I think, was to Reuben a cousin.

Joel married a Raymond like Jesse his brother,

Not sister, but cousin I've been told by my mother. His children were eight, he lived by the river.

For the Kendalls, I've written, were millers forever.

Samuel loved mills, to good fortune was rowing.

He oft changed his home where the waters were flowing.

He married a Taylor, by name and by trade,

His children were eight, and he deacon was made.

Andrew lived in West Royalston, had his desire,

Hannah Jennings for wife, was appointed Esquire,

Of his father's six sons not one was so tall.

Three children he had, no daughters at all.

Now David, the ninth child of Jesse, we find,

Was handsome, was learned, sweet tempered and kind,

The wish of his heart was attainment of knowledge,

He preached to his hearers, went nicely thro' college.

When living at Cambridge (a privilege rare)

He saw a young lady, both modest and fair,

What can a young student do better for life,

Than study his lessons and seek a good wife.

Susan Jarvis lived near where the college stands.

Her father was wealthy in money and lands,

So he took this fair Susan with a nice bag of gold,

Eight children they had and my story is told,

Unless I should tell where he preached, I declare,

In Hubbardston first, not long he staid there,

He removed to Augusta, New York, on West hill.

And his son tills the fields, where his father lived, still.

KENDALL GENEALOGY 11

Of Calvin, the tenth child of Jesse, I fear

To speak very freely as he was so near,

'Twas he caught the bear, tended mill with his father.

Many changes he made, was good looking rather.

His wife, of a neighboring physician was daughter,

(Five daughters, four sons, of the union came after,)

Abigail Batcheller, energetic and witty.

Kind hearted to all, and the grieved shared her pity.

An excellent singer, could compose her own rhyme, [time

While she played with her children she danced them to

Though she learned them to dance, she taught them to prayHer memory was retentive, wish I had it today.

Then Lois, eleventh, much loved in her day,

She married a Raymond then faded away.No children she left for their mother to grieve,

I've been told she had one, which I rather believe.

Of Anna the last and the sweetest I'll speak.

Two years and four months was her age when complete,

Five liv'd to four score, some to three score and ten.

Of the children of Jesse, I will now say Amen.(Number and names of Jesse's grandchildren.)

First, the children of Lizzie and Peleg we see,

Deborah, William and Abel make three,

Lizzie, Peleg, Jesse, David, second Jesse, have come,Andrew, James, Asa Evans, the record is done.

The children of Mary and Jacob I'll write,

Lucinda, Charles, Mary, names hard to indite,

Jacob, Olive, Reuben, Daniel and David appear,

Elisha, Eliza, Ebenezer, are here.

Third, Jesse, who settled in the north part of Gerry,Had Anna and Betsy, who were good looking very,

Mary, Francis and Lois, and Paul with an "R,"Jesse, Lucinda, John, David, Huzzah!

12 KENDALL GENEALOGY

Fourth, Hannah who wed Reuben Graves, I'll keep tally,

Had Anna, and Hannah, and Olive and Sally,Then married a Marsh, with a Reuben was blest,

Asa, Betsy and Mary were the names of the rest.

Fifth, Olive who married E. Graves, as I fancy.Had Sally, Elisha, the third one was Nancy,

Then Laura, and Jesse, and Lois succeed,(Much patience with rhyming the reader will need.)

Sixth, Joel in Athol, who kept the old "Mill,"Had Mary, and Lyman who is grinding there still,

Anna, Sally and Abby, next Joel their brother,And Francis and Nancy, I think there's no other.

Samuel was seventh (my subject don't vary,)Had Samuel and David and Sally and Mary,

Then Lucy, Eliza and ere I shall finish,

Alvira, Augusta, the numbers diminish.

The eighth child was Andrew, his children were few,Stephen, Levi, and Lyman, he knew what to do,

Unlike the poor woman in the nursery ditty;

That he had no fair daughters, I think was a pity.

Next David, the ninth, had four daughters, four sons,

Mary, Anna, and Rebecca, as the history runs,

Elizabeth Wyeth, and David they sayWas next older than Jarvis, whom we called Leonard J.

Next Mary who died, as the record appears,

Eighteen seventeen, lived three months and three years,

S. Austin, whose name-sake was skilled in theology,

Nathaniel the last one in this genealogy.

Calvin, the tenth, I know for a verity,

Was the last child of Jesse who left a posterity,

Lois might have had one that died very early, [pearly.

But Anna, when young, passed the Heavenly gates

Page 17: Kendall genealogy; the descendants of Thomas and Francis ......1760580 FOREWORD Havingreadthefollowingsocalled"rhyminggene- alogy"withmuchinterest, owingtoitsquaintstyle andthehistoricalvaluecontainedtherein, andupon

KENDALL GENEALOGY 13

Now Calvin, the tenth of his father I'll trace.

Allow for some bias, I am one of the race;

His wife Abby B., in the line I will carry, [Mary.Three times three were their children, the oldest was

She married Seth Whiting, a Captain and Soldier,

Made good brushes too, than his wife was some older;

She bore of the labor of life a great share.

With fortitude blest, every trial could bear.

The number of her children were the same as her mother,First Henry, (died young) Susan Harding another,

Lucius Henry the third in the record I make,Then the fourth was a son and they called him John Lake.

Mary Kendall, J. Miles, then one, Ira S.

Anstis A., for myself to honor and bless.

Then Olive, a name that three relatives bore.

All counted together made nine and no more.

Then Thomas died single at twenty eight years.

Was honest, upright, in his death were no fears.

His example and counsel let us copy with care,

For in mansions of glory he now finds a share.

The third one was Anstis, and that is myself,

(I'm tempted to lay the whole thing on the shelf,) [beginner,

Of the "Home," now in Worcester, for poor children

I've been praised for a saint, then blamed for a sinner.

J. M. Miles is my husband, has been twice made a Deacon,Of his virtues and honors let the chronicles speak on,

The children (our own) number two, as you see,

Lowell Milton, the oldest, and Eugene with a T.

And then I will tell, we adopted four more,Mary and Eliza, who were sisters before.

And then Lucius K. whom we named for my brother,

Abby B. was the last one and named for my mother.

14 KENDALL GENEALOGY

Of Calvin, the fourth child of Calvin, I'll speak.

When he wanted a wife Lydia Wetherell did seek,

Fanny M. was the first, then Abigail B.,

Mary A., Lucius W., then came Anna E.

Sophronia the fifth, in the schools was a teacher.

United her fate with L. Wiswall, a preacher,

Had Mary Sophronia, Ellen Kendall, and then

Luther, James, Samuel Green, Mary Frances. Amen.

Stephen took Sarah Conant to make his life even

Had Olivia Maria, then Frederick Stephen,

Artemas C, Sarah E., Abby Kelly, make five,

Charles F., William Henry, all but one are alive.

Abby, the seventh liv'd twenty-four years,

Then faded and died, and we shed bitter tears

Olive wed L. J. Kendall, and of children had one, Susan,

Lucius died at five years, and the record is done.

KENDALL ORIGIN

Kendall or Kendal,—"Local." Derived from the

town of "Kendal, Westmoreland county, England," andwas so called from the river "Ken," on which it is situated,

and "dale," the dale on the river "Ken." (Etymological

Dictionary of Family and Christian names by WilliamArthur, M. A., p. 173.)

English authorities suppose this name to have beenoriginally spelled "Candale." (Magna Brit. VI, 19).

THE TOWN OF KENDALL

Kendall, England, was one of the first provincial

towns that printed a newspaper, beginning in 1811. Ken-dall was celebrated for its buckram or green druggets, at

one time the common clothing of the poor in London. Thus far little has been found concerning the English

ancestry of Thomas"^ and Francis^ Kendall of Charles-

town, whose descendants we have traced in the following

pages.

An item of interest was found in the " Generall Historic

of Virginia, New England and West Indies," by CaptainJohn Smith, published in London, 1627.

Mr. Miles Kendall was elected Governor in 1615,

and became Governor of Bermuda. Much is said of

him and his rule there in the records. We make no asser-

tions or attempts to connect him with the brothers

Thomas and Francis Kendall of Charlestown, It wouldbe a clue worth following, if we had more time and spaceto devote to the English ancestry. But it must rest withsome abler scholar to prove the connection, if there beany. The fact that Governor Kendall's Christian namewas "Miles" and Francis' Kendall of Charlestown wascalled Francis "Miles" until his marriage readily suggests

a relationship which might exist.

Having no sons to bear his name the daughters each

The probable home of Francis Kendall has already

been given as Kendal, England. He appears in Charles-

town, Mass., in 1640 and in Woburn in 1642, when that

town was settled. Savage says he was made freeman in

1647 and in 1700 swore he was fourscore years old, thusplacing his birth at 1620.

Woburn records give the following :" Ffrances Kendall,"

subscribed with thirty-one others to the "Town Orders"for Woburn on Dec. 18, 1640, also— his marriage record,

"Ffrances Kendall, alias Miles and Mary [Tidd] Teddmaryed 24th 10 mo. [Dec. 24] 1644."

Family tradition advances the theory he fled secretly

from England, thus using the name Miles; another tradi-

tion states he was stolen from Ralph Miles of Englandand brought to America, but the fact concerning GovernorMiles Kendall already referred to would seem stronger

toward the name Miles being a possible connectionbetween them.

Sewall in a genealogical notice says: "He was agentleman of great respectability and influence in the

town where he resided."

His will was dated May 9, 1706, in which he styles

himself "miller" and gives, "one half his 'corne mill'

together with the rights of the streams, dams and utensils

thereunto belonging" to his heirs as specified.

The first mill was built in Woburn about 1650 byFrancis Kendall, but not the present mill as has beenclaimed. Mr. John Johnson, a descendant of Francis, is

said to have papers proving this first mill was built onanother stream three-quarters of a mile east of the present

mill, which was built by SamueP on land bought fromMr, John Johnson Aug. 11, 1694.

Francis's homestead was nearer the town, located

about one and three-quarters miles from the J. R. Kendallplace and taken down about 1839.
