unbeatable,” said Bob Baffert,trainer ofOaks hopefulRiaAn-tonia (10-1).
Untapable is also 2-for-2 atChurchill Downs, havingwon amaiden race there last June, then the Grade II Pocahontasin September, and Asmussensaid she’s only gotten biggerand stronger.
Untapable’s connectionshave tasted Oaks success aswell. Jockey Rosie Napravnikwon the 2012 race on BelieveYou Can, and Asmussentrained Winchell’s Summerlyto the 2005 crown.
Count Churchill Downsoddsmaker Mike Battagliaamong Untapable’s believers. He said he’d have made her atop-fivechoice in theKentuckyDerby if she were in it, and hegave no consideration to rais-ingher oddswhen shedrew theoutermost No. 13 post for the11⁄8-mile Oaks.
“She’s a standout,” he said.“She’s as good as the colts thisyear, I think. I knew she drewthe outside, but I really don’tthink it’llmatter at amile and aeighth. … Plus, she’s handledthis track already. … Her lasttwo races, she ran faster thanthe colts in Louisiana on thesame day. Right now, she’s in aclass by herself, to me.”
Fiske is confident in his fillybut is not necessarily viewingthe Oaks as an easy tap-in. Hebelieves breaking from theNo. 13 gate, which has neveryielded an Oaks winner, pre-sents “a hurdle.”
“But so far, she loads well, she breaks well,” he said. Bybeing No. 13, “she loads last, sothat is probably a benefit forher. The fact that she doesn’tlike people, and she’ll be theclosest one to 115,000, I don’tknow if that’s going to do good.
...“It’s just a matter of break-
ingwell, and if she does, I thinkshe has a big chance.”
Unlike Santa Anita Oakswinner Fashion Plate, who isthe second choice at 6-1, andAshland winner Rosalind, whois the co-third choice at 8-1, Un-tapable has never won a GradeI race. My Miss Sophia (8-1),the speedy winner of Aque-duct’sGrade IIGazelle and oneof two Todd Pletcher traineesalong with Got Lucky (20-1),and Ria Antonia are some ofUntapable’s other top compet-itors.
Untapable was 0-for-2 inGradeIstarts, includingeighthin the Breeders’ Cup JuvenileFillies last November, but shehas improved since then.
“I just hope she’s as good aseverybody thinks she is,” Fiskesaid. “She is yet to win a GradeI. She needs that on her re-
sume, and hopefully that’ll oc-cur on Friday. Up to this point, she seems to have attracted alot of attention. A lot of peoplethink shewould havebeen sec-ondor third choice in the (Ken-tucky) Derby, so I think thatsays something for her.”
For theWinchell stable, Un-tapable is even more specialbecause she comes from athoroughbred lineage that hasbrought it so much success.
Winchell Thoroughbredsowned Tapit during a racingcareer that included a victoryin the 2004 Wood Memorial.
The Winchells also ownedUntapable’s dam, the graded-stakes-winning Fun House, aswell as her mother before thatand her mother before that.
“It’s really a culmination ofyears,” Fiske said. “We wontheOaks in2005withSummer-ly, and she was a yearling pur-chase and that was great. Butifwe could pull it off on Friday(with a home-bred filly), thatwould be really special.”
Fiske said all of Tapit’s off-springseemtobesmartandat-tentive and have strong per-sonalities. Untapable is no ex-ception.
“One way or the other, shetends to ignoreyou and runyouout of her stall,” he said.
Fiske thinks it’ll be a chal-lenge for Untapable to keepher composure with the bigcrowds and noise of Oaks Daybut believes she is improvingand “getting more profession-al” in that regard.
AnUntapable victorywouldbe a good start towhat could bea big weekend for Asmussenand the Winchell stable. Theyalso haveherhalf-brother, Tap-iture, running in the KentuckyDerby.
What would Fiske think ofan Untapable-Tapiture doublescore?
“I think I would be headingto Disneyland after that,” hesaid.

Churchill Downs’ annualstakes race honoring the late1987 Kentucky Derby winnerAlysheba often draws from thebest of the previous year’s Der-by—andthisyear’sversionisnoexception, led by last year’s im-probable 3-year-old championWillTakeCharge.
“That’s always healthy forracing that we can get them tocome back,” said D. Wayne Lu-kas, trainerofWillTakeCharge, the odds-on favorite in today’srace. “You know so many ofthem get retired. It would havebeen pretty easy to retire him,too.Theythrewaroundsomese-riousmoneyandyet theconnec-tionswanted to runhimanotheryear and see if we can take it toanother level.…Theeconomicsoftheracingbusinessnowadaysis that thehorse (that) isacham-pion almost invariably goes tothestud.”
On Thursday, the field lostlast year’s fourth-place Derbyfinisher, Normandy Invasion, when FoxHill Farm announcedvia its Twitter account that thesonofTapitwouldscratch“afterreturning fromtrack thismorn-ingwithaminorhoof issue.”
Thedefection, whichleavesafield of eight, likely will onlypushthe4-5morninglineoddsofWill Take Charge down evenmore.

Lukas said he’s targetingChurchill’s Stephen FosterHandicapinJune, whichisaWinAndYou’reInraceforthisyear’sBreeders’ Cup Classic. JockeyGaryStevenswill beaboard.
“I didn’t really have it (theAlysheba) targeted, but I got tolooking at from the OaklawnHandicap to theFoster, which isour ultimate goal, I was con-cerned about the 60-some daysand not having a race,” Lukassaid.
Lukas said themileandasix-teenth distance isn’t “ideal” forWill Take Charge’s late-runningstyle, but “I thoughtwe’dproba-blybebetteroffmaybegoingfora race rather than five or sixworks”before theFoster.
The distance doesn’t changethatstyle,Lukassaid,particular-lybecauseofChurchill’slengthyquarter-mile stretch run to thefinish line.
“The positive is it’s a longstretch, so we can take advan-tage,” Lukas said. “Those shortstretches like at Santa Anita(Park),Gulfstream(Park, siteofthe Donn), like that, they’re theones that get you in troublewithhim.Heneeds toget a chance torunat ’emprettymuch.”
