Root for Green

Colour our future green – that was the slogan on the recyclable bags given out by Keppel Group at an eco event which represented my first exposure some years ago to Keppel’s green initiatives. From budding efforts to what has panned out into a strategic and sustainable thrust for the Group, Keppel has certainly made headways growing a green culture.

The spirit of innovation and finding creative solutions has led Keppelites to develop products and services ahead of times. Our KFELS semisubmersible drilling tender 3600E design is lauded as a zero discharge vessel while the revolutionary offshore wind turbine installation vessel will redefine the way in which offshore wind farms operate across the world.

We are marrying competencies in our property and infrastructure businesses to contribute to the development of eco-cities. Our buildings must achieve at least Green Mark Gold standards while the proprietary technology in our environmental engineering business is pushing the envelope for sustainable infrastructure solutions for now and the future.

In pointing out opportunities for Keppel, CEO Choo Chiau Beng said, “With unusually severe storms, floods and poor winter conditions in many parts of the world, the man on the street has also awakened to the impact of climate change.” As people become more conscious of the environmental impact on their lives, it would translate to more demand for greener products and solutions. And importantly, a premium warrant for companies who pursue these efforts.

Our efforts to be environmentally-responsible

have borne fruit. Customers continue to be won over by Keppelites who focus on their needs. With garnered knowledge of the market through the years and keen attention to detail, we meet demand for products and services which optimise resource consumption, as well as present a sustainable lifestyle and cleaner future.

As we challenge ourselves to excel continuously in our businesses, we hold ourselves accountable to preserve the environment as well.

Across the Group, initiatives have sprouted to ensure we utilise resources efficiently and effectively. From individuals saving electricity and water to our business units recycling materials and switching to more energy efficient equipment, Keppel believes that optimising resources is not only environmentally-friendly but also a responsibility to our stakeholders.

At Keppel, we put action to words to effect change.

Going back to my first eco event mentioned earlier, in addition to sponsoring the bags, Keppelites were among the first in Singapore who led by example by spreading the green message to shoppers as they bagged their groceries.

Whether it is through our research and development for greener products and services or our efforts to be a responsible corporate citizen, embracing a green culture is a natural branch of growth for Keppel. It not only makes common sense, it makes good business sense.

As part of the agreement, Clearwater has options to build another two similar jackup units with Keppel FELS. I f exerc ised, the options for the additional two rigs will bring the total contract value to above US$730 million.

Mr Rob Petty, Managing Partner and Co-Founder o f C l e a r w a t e r, s a i d , “Conf idence is rapidly returning to the offshore industry and we expect a fundamental recovery of the sector. There is a clear bifurcation in the jackup market with oil companies increasingly focused on new, high specification rigs for their projects.

“We have followed this market closely and chose Keppel FELS as our long term partner to help us execute our investment plans in the transition of the jackup market from old rigs to safer, more efficient rigs.

With industry fundamentals for high-specification jackups strengthening, Keppel FELS has been garnering more enquiries and orders for its proprietary jackup designs

initial discussions through the engineering design and contract placement.

“We look forward to this same degree of professionalism and precision all the way through to delivery.”

Mr Wong Kok Seng, MD of Keppel FELS, said, “We thank Clearwater for their confidence in Keppel FELS and look forward to nurture a win-win partnership with them.

“The KFELS B Class design is the industry standard for efficient and high grade performance; to date, 33 such units have been delivered for operations in various parts of the world. I am confident that when completed, the KFELS B Class jackups will provide outstanding value and returns on Clearwater’s investment.”

K - R E I T A s i a a c h i e v e d distributable income of $85.6 million for FY 2010, 21.4% higher than that for the same period in 2009. This was due mainly to net property income, wh i ch ro se 37 .7% to $67.3 million, and share of results of associated companies, which increased 18.1% to $9.7 million for FY 2010.

Strong performance boosted by acquisitions

N e t p ro p e r t y i n c o m e expanded as a result of lower property tax expense and income contribution from three acquisitions, namely a 29% additional interest in Prudential Tower in Singapore, 50% interest in 275 George Street in Br isbane, and 77 King Street in Sydney, al l of which were completed in November 2009, March

K-REIT As ia’s portfo l io occupancy rate stood at 97.0% at 4Q 2010.

OpTIMISe ASSeTSIn December 2010, K-REIT Asia completed the strategic asset swap that comprised the divestment of Keppel Towers and GE Tower and the acquisition of a one-third interest in Marina Bay Financial Centre Towers 1 & 2 and Marina Bay Link Mall. These transactions renewed and upgraded K-REIT Asia’s property portfolio without raising additional equity from Unitholders.

SeeKING GROWTH OppORTUNITIeSPositive growth in demand for Grade A and prime office space in Singapore is expected to continue in 2011 as businesses continue to expand and occupants seek to consolidate operations in contiguous space. This coupled with the limited supply of office space in 2013 and 2014 provides rental stability in the longer term.

K-REIT Asia remains focused on improving operational and capital efficiencies so as to optimise the performance of its assets and deliver stable and growing returns to Unitholders. keppelite

K-Green Tru s t (KGT ) , which invests in ‘green’ infrastructure assets, posted a 22.1% higher-than-forecast net profit of $8.7 million from its date of listing on 29 June to 31 December 2010.

Including the net profit of $847,000 for the period 1 January to 28 June 2010, when it was a private trust, full-year net profit came to $9.57 million, on the back of $65.8 million in revenue.

Revenue garnered since listing was $49.3 million while earnings per unit were 1.39 cents. Net asset value per unit as at 31 December 2010 was $1.16.

Distribution per unit of 4.31 cents was 10.2% higher than the projected 3 .91 cents , whi le the annual ised distr ibution yield was 7.9%, based on the units’ closing price of $1.07 on 31 December 2010.

Mr Thomas Pang, CEO of Keppel Infrastructure Fund Management Pte Ltd, the Trustee-Manager of KGT, said, “KGT has achieved better performance than forecasted. We will work closely with our Sponsor to ensure that our existing port fo l io cont inues to

provide stable, predictable and reliable distributions for our unitholders.

“The growing sustainable development sector now and in the foreseeable future will drive demand for waste management, water and wastewater t reatment, renewable energy, energy efficiency and other green initiatives. KGT will be well-positioned to seize these opportunities and grow our asset base.”

KGT currently owns the Senoko Waste-to-Energy (WTE) Plant, the Keppel Seghers Tuas WTE Plant and the Keppel Seghers Ulu Pandan NEWater Plant. Together, the two WTE plants can treat almost half of Singapore’s incinerable waste.

The revenue of KGT was derived mainly from three components:

recognition of construction •revenue of $16.5 million arising from the Senoko WTE P lant f lue gas upgrade; f i n a n c e i n c o m e o f •$14.0 million; revenue from operating •and maintaining the plants amounting to $35.3 million.

The underlying performance of the three assets in KGT’s portfolio is expected to remain stable. All three assets have long-term concession

agreements with Singapore statutory bodies, namely the National Environment Agency and Public Utilities Board. keppelite

Keppel Telecommunications & Transportation’s (Keppel T&T ) opera t ing p ro f i t improved significantly by 49% to $12.4 million due to additional contribution from the data centre business and better operating margins as a result of cost control measures.

P ro f i t be fo re tax and except ional i tems rose 15% at $75.0 million. The improvement was the result of its higher operating profit and share of profits from associated companies.

The group revenue decreased 5% in 2010 to $107.8 million due mainly to the winding down of non-core businesses and lower logistics revenue in Singapore. The lower revenue is partly offset by revenue from the data centre business.

Growth on track for Keppel T&T

For logistics, Keppel T&T is pursuing opportunities to expand into new customer segments and warehouse locations in Singapore. In addition, it is looking to grow overseas in Vietnam and China where its port in the Pearl River Delta continues to operate at full capacity.

Keppel T&T’s data centres in Ireland and Singapore are also experiencing full occupancy in its current facilities due to strong demand.

Apart from aiming to e x p a n d t h e c u r re n t facilities to further meet the high demand, Keppel T&T’s data centre fund continues to seek good quality data centre assets for investment.keppelite

In recognit ion of their financial performance, Keppel Corporation and Keppel FELS were acknowledged at the 24th Annual Singapore 1000 & Singapore SME 1000 incorporating Singapore International 100 awards ceremony.

Keppel Corporation was named the winner of the Singapore International 100: Overseas Sales/Turnover Excellence in Markets (The Americas), while Keppel FELS took home a similar award for the European market, on 21 January 2011.

Speaking about firms that grew from Singapore’s small domestic market to become regional players, Guest-of-Honour Mr Lee Yi Shyan, Minister of State for Trade and Industry, said, “A

“Those who are successful have internat ional ised. They achieve exceptional growth because they offer something unique that the markets needed. All these however, can change over time when new competitors enter the market. Our firms must continually move up the value chain ahead of competition.”

Mr Lee urged the local business community to continual ly increase its innovation capacity and invest in research and development, in order to stay ahead of competition. keppelite

“We have known Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company, since the 1980s, when we did some repair jobs for them. At that time, there was a rig boom, but Petrobras was more focused on Europe, where most of their rigs were built in France. They were not ready to come to Asia.

“ T h e n i n t h e 1 9 9 0 s , Odebrecht, a Braz i l ian company who owned some drilling rigs, brought some jackups for Keppel to repair. Odebrecht subsequently invited us to partner them in jobs, and we jointly bidded for the tender from Petrobras for the P-18. The agreement was for us to build the hull in Singapore, and Odebrecht would do the topside in Brazil. We completed the P-18 and it was the best project for Petrobras at that time. We helped them to make money, and of course we also made money”, commented Mr Choo.

On how Keppel grew its relationships with customers like Petrobras, Mr Choo said, “The oil business is a very nationalistic business, and we understand that it is the driving force for governments, and so we decided to work closely with the governments.

“Singapore has no home market and so we need to be near our customers and near our markets – this is the only way to develop our business. We also believe our customers must win so that

we can have a sustainable business.”

On areas in which Brazilian businesses can benefit from Singapore, Mr Choo commented, “Singapore is very complementary to Brazil. We are a hub for the Asian region and we welcome businesses to come to Singapore.

“For Keppel , we are cu r ren t l y comb in ing our expertise in our key businesses in offshore and marine, infrastructure and property to tap opportun i t ies in the area of urbanisation and sustainable development. We have formed a team to focus on this, and we think there are abundant opportunities in Asia, especially in China. “Singapore went through urbanisation and today we are a modern city w i th good hous ing , in f ras t ructure , c lean air and water. Brazilian companies can come to Singapore to understand all the urbanisation issues which Singapore had to tackle. They can also reach out to other parts of Asia through Singapore.

“I would like to extend a personal invitation to all Brazilian citizens, businesses and government officials to come to Singapore, to tap on Singapore’s position as a hub to 3.3 billion people in Asia.” keppelite

Keppel AmFELS achieved another milestone delivery of Rowan EXL-III, the third of four EXL jackups, to a subsidiary of Rowan ahead of schedule and within budget

Commendation note

Equipped for demanding drilling requirements in harsh weather environments, this high-specification jackup design is a product of Keppel’s rich experience in constructing rigs for the North Sea region since 1985.

The proprietary design of Offshore Technology Development (OTD), Keppel’s R&D arm, the KFELS N Class rig has features that allow dri l l ing and production concurrently.

At 568 feet (extendable to 598 feet) or about 56 storeys tall, this jackup unit can operate in severe weather conditions in water depths of 400 to 500 feet, which are 40% deeper than traditional units in benign waters.

It is also able to drill to depths of 35,000 feet, which is 15% deeper compared to existing harsh environment jackup rigs.

Mr Wong Kok Seng, MD of Keppel FELS, said, “In recent times, Norwegian oil companies have expressed their intent to drill additional exploration wells in 2011. Some 60 wells have been identified and 23 are located in the North Sea.

“In addition to the growing high-specification jackup market, this bodes well for companies with ready-to-drill premium jackups in hand. We trust that the N Class jackups will prove to be valuable

assets to Rowan as it answers the call for demanding drilling services.”

Construction of the third KFELS N Class rig at Keppel FELS, which is to be named the Rowan Norway, is on schedule with expected delivery in the second quarter of 2011.

MAKING A VISION ReALITYIs your work environment as safe or unsafe as you think it is? That is what the Keppel Safety Perception Survey, administered across the Keppel Group, aims to find out.

Launched on 5 January 2011 by the Chairman and CEOs of Keppel’s business units, who were the first participants, the survey marks a critical first step in efforts to enhance Keppel’s Safety Management System. This review is part of the Keppel Workplace Safety and Health 2018 initiative.

Leadership in safety is key to this, and while not short of exemplary safety personnel even in subsidiaries located as far flung as Belgium, Keppel is looking to actively increase its pool of safety ambassadors.

employees and subcontract workers participated in the 24-question survey which will help in the assessment of Keppel’s current state of safety and the determination of the actions needed to improve safety culture, systems and performance.

An internal pool of assessors from across the Group will be trained and equipped with safety competencies to address the gaps between the actual and perceived safety assessments, based on the survey and on-the-ground evaluations. They will subsequently develop benchmarking indicators and introduce safety roadmaps

for indiv idual business units.

Chairman of the Board Safety Committee, Mr Sven Ullring, said, “DuPont, the world’s

top safety consultants, are assist ing us in our self assessment exercise. Part of their scope is to impart their know-how to us and subsequently leave us to run by ourselves. This is to ensure we will not need consultants in the future, just auditors, every second year or so, to make sure that we are in compliance with our own systems and procedures.

“This exercise will provide us with the tools to significantly improve and align safety across our business units. We need to build up a pool of key personnel across business units, hierarchies and professions to foster a culture of safety. Passing on the knowledge – Some 200 Keppelites, including members from Keppel O&M’s senior management and working teams flocked to the productivity sharing sessions conducted by Keppel YL

young Leaders get productiveFormed just six months ago, the Keppel Young Leaders (Keppel YL) initiative has sparked action with a variety of projects and social activities for high-potential employees of the Keppel Group.

K e p p e l Y L h a s m a d e headway with seven special projects covering broad areas in business process and productivity improvement, knowledge building, the pool ing of technology assets, business analysis and community outreach.

Some 70 active members from across business units have been drawn into various working committees to drive these high-impact projects.

Notably in mid-January this year, the Young Leaders concluded the first phase of a productivity enhancement programme for the Keppel Offshore & Marine (Keppel O&M) group. This project also involved a study trip to survey some of Korea’s leading shipyards and a visit to the 2010 Marine Tech Korea Exhibition held in Changwon city.

“Sh ipp ing i s a ma jo r cornerstone of South Korea’s economy, and the country is home to some of the biggest shipbuilders in the world. The purpose of our trip was to get acquainted with the best practices, work flows

and technologies employed by these major shipyards, and see how we can learn and adapt them,” said Vice President of Keppel YL and Project Lead, Loh Kee Huat.

Following this study trip, the project team shared the knowledge they gained with several seminars held for Keppel O&M companies in Singapore. In all, these sharing sessions drew some 200 Keppelites, including members from senior management and various productivity teams across the yards.

“While not everything is applicable to us due to variances in operating models and facilities, the opportunity to observe these foreign shipyards was an eye-opener for many of us. Even those who attended the sharing sessions found new impetus to develop and improve their own processes,” added pro ject team member, Andy Ng.

Some of the recommendations made at the sharing sessions will be adopted by various ya rds , and t racked in the second phase of this extensive project.

The Keppel O&M productivity initiative is just one of several high-impact projects driven by Keppel YL. Young Leaders are given opportunities to champion and participate in significant projects and

cross-border assignments such as this, to help them develop a global mindset and a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship.

In addition to the rich exposure and learning experiences, the Young Leaders will also enjoy greater interaction with one another, thereby advancing the Group’s global synergy and collective strength. keppelite

Rich heritagein Singapore. Its maritime legacy saw it selected as one of 50 iconic landmarks chosen by the Economic Development Board (EDB) for a Heritage Relay.

Held on 18 January 2011, the event is the first in a series of celebrations to mark EDB’s 50th anniversary this year. A team of 10 Keppelites participated in the relay, racing together with the EDB contingent from Alexandra Road to Marina at Keppel Bay (MKB). As venue sponsor, MKB contributed water bottles to the goodie bags.

Ms Wang Look Fung , GM of Group Corporate Communications, Keppel Corporation, said, “We are happy that Keppel Bay is recognised as a Singapore heritage site by EDB and participants of the run learnt

more about the history of Keppel and Singapore.

“In many ways, the story of Keppel mirrors Singapore’s. While Singapore prospered as an entrepot, Keppel benefited from this growth. We began as a small ship repair yard at the historic Keppel Harbour site, which is now known as Keppel Bay.

“Over the 40 odd years that followed, with competencies built up in the marine industry at Keppel Harbour, we grew into a global company with leading businesses in Offshore & Marine, Infrastructure and Property, and with presence in over 30 countries.” keppelite

Man of many anecdotes, Mr Seow, or TK as he is fondly known, has served in various engineering positions and been involved in a myriad of local and overseas work.

At the grand age of 70 when most would have retired, TK continues to work tirelessly and mentor generations of young Keppelites. Not stopping to take a break even after recovering from cancer last July, TK bounced back to action with passion and zest.

His optimistic spirit was evident at the Lecture held on 13 January 2011 at the National University of

Vibrant forty years at Keppel Sharing gems of his experience gathered from four decades of working with Keppel, Mr Seow Tiang Keng, Senior Manager (Electrical and Instrumentation) at Keppel FELS, was the speaker at the 8th Keppel Offshore & Marine Lecture.

Singapore (NUS). Entitled Forty Years Passage of Passion, the event was jointly organised by NUS and Keppe l under the auspices of the Keppel Professorship in Ocean, O f f s h o re a n d M a r i n e Technology, and attended by a captive audience of over 200. “I used to work at the old Keppel Shipyard at Telok Blangah way back in 1969. I joined as an electrical engineer at 29 and was the first non-mechanical person to be trained as a ship repair manager. That was quite a big thing for me,” TK recalls fondly.

On top of his shipbuilding and ship repair experiences, TK was involved in the development of a l l three phases of Keppel’s Tuas Shipyard, the final construction phase of Sedona Residential Suites in Hanoi, Vietnam and the commissioning of power barges for operation in the Philippines.

Having worked in different countries and cultures, he recounted an incident during the construction of a power plant in Hebei, China. One wintery morning, TK noticed a group of workers painstakingly sewing a large quantity of underblankets together.

His init ial thought and worry was that the workers intended to spend their nights in the power plant. He continued his observations without interfering and eventually their intentions came to light. The giant blanket was used to keep the power plant’s turbine warm and toasty, to prevent thermal shock and damage to the blades.

Cautioning the avid listeners at the Lecture that while it can be tempting to impose one’s ways and methods when sent overseas, the lesson learnt f rom his experience that it is often wiser to observe how locals innovate on the spot and come up with ingenious yet cost effective solutions.

Currently overseeing the installation and operation of electrical systems on oil rigs and other floating platforms, TK is going strong. He said,” ‘I’ve been approached with offers from other firms, but I always turned them down because I knew I wouldn’t be able to do the type of projects Keppel had and I’ve forged strong bonds with many Keppelites.” keppelite

Having worked in Keppel for 50 years, Ibrahim Bin Bachik has witnessed the remarkable growth of Keppel from a small ship repair yard in the 60’s to being the global leader in multiple businesses.

As the longest serving Keppelite, he was given a farewell party and presented with a plaque of appreciation for his 50 years of loyal and dedicated service towards the company during the year-end celebrations for 2010.

Ibrahim joined the Singapore Harbour Board (before it became Keppel Shipyard) in 1960 at the age of 19 as a messenger where he travelled around Singapore in a van delivering packages.

He subsequently became a Plan Printer in the drawing department. He said, “In those days, plan drawings were done by hand. In order to make copies of it, I would take a photo and then develop that photo myself with the in-house machine. It was just like how a photo studio develops negatives. Today, of course, it is drawn on computers and printed out on printers in just a few seconds.”

fondly, he said, “I was very young but my colleagues and bosses then took good care of me and really helped me out. During my time in Keppel, I learned many new skills and my colleagues were like my second family. The spirit of camaraderie I think has stayed with Keppel since its days as the Singapore Harbour Board.

“Even during the difficult times we banded together and always kept a positive attitude. The management has been very supportive and one of the reasons I have stayed for so long is because I have always felt secure in my job.”

As he g rew w i th the company, Ibrahim also helped mentor the new recruits under his charge. Illustrating his philosophy of renewal, he said “My uncles, two who were electricians and one who was a driver here, recommended me to this company and I have in turn recommended my son as well.”

Reduan, a senior engineer in the Plant & Maintenance Department who has worked at Keppel Shipyard for seven years, said, “I remember my dad working at the shipyard when I young. When I became an engineer, the

marine industry was the natural choice and where better than Keppel? Having worked here for a while now, I can see how the Keppel spirit is nurtured through the generations.”

Having seen Keppel take some tremendous steps,

Home is where family is “Other things may change us, but we start and end with family.” These words by renowned author Anthony Brand could not ring more true for Mohammed Zahid Yacob, Assistant GM from Keppel Land, a Singaporean working in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Not one to pass up an opportunity to expand his horizons, Zahid took up the position in Jeddah in 2008, ready to embrace the challenges of working and living in a new country and culture.

He embarked on th i s adventure with his wife and four children – a daughter aged 13, son aged 11 and five-year-old twin boys, who joined him three months later. Together, the family have navigated the Jeddah landscape and lifestyle, adjusted to having weekends on a Thursday and Friday as well as started learning Arabic.

Moving to Jeddah was not as much of a culture shock for the family as he had first imagined. Zahid’s wife has been a tremendous pillar of support. As a graduate of Islamic Law from Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt, she was instrumental in helping

the family understand and adapt to the new culture.

“As my wife and I were quite familiar with this part of the world before this posting, it was relatively easy adapting to the new environment although we still find the restrictions limiting and inconvenient at times. For example, in Saudi Arabia, my wife is not able to drive and go out as freely as she could in Singapore. However, this encourages us to go out together as a family more often, growing us closer together.”

The close knit family have b e e n e x p l o r i n g t h e surrounding region with holidays to South Africa, and Turkey, apart from making

occasional visits to Mekkah and Medina.

“We intend to cover more of the Middle Eastern region this year. Having travelled to most of the Middle Eastern countries myself, I find Oman the most beautiful holiday destination with spectacular landscapes and nice hospitable people. I am looking forward to bringing my family there soon,” Zahid enthused.

Whilst the family has adapted well to the culture, Zahid shared candidly of some of the challenges his children are facing, “There are only about 50 S ingaporean families in Saudi Arabia and no Singapore international school. Consequently, all

four of my children are in the British International School. They don’t have problems coping with their studies but integrating socially is quite a challenge. They are gradually getting used to mixing with other expatriate students of different nationalities.”

Evaluating his two years in Jeddah as City Head, Zahid added, “I am currently working on the development of Al Mada Towers in Jeddah and am looking forward to see the project to completion and see the company grow. Moving to Jeddah has certainly been a challenging and eye-opening experience and I am glad that I have the support and encouragement of my family.” keppelite

ARTS KAKISKeppel Nights is Singapore’s first ticket subsidy scheme to benefit and cultivate audiences for the arts. It is a collaborative effort between Keppel and MICA’s Arts and Culture Development Office (ACDO), which is the scheme’s administrator.

As part of Keppel Nights, the Arts Kakis scheme encourages volunteers to sign up as Arts Kakis to help reach out to beneficiaries to attend arts performances.

On 16 December 2010, ACDO hosted several Arts Kakis at Singapore Dance Theatre’s year-end ballet ‘Sleeping Beauty’. Among some of the Arts Kakis that attended were Joanne G Ongkeko, an administrative executive and Byron Siau, a systems consultant.

On why he decided to be an Arts Kaki, Byron said, “I signed up as an Arts Kaki because it would be easier for me to persuade my friends to attend arts events with me. Finally, the days of attending shows alone will be behind me!”

Joanne shared that many of her friends, after experiencing arts shows for the first time as Keppel Nights beneficiaries, have decided to sign up as Arts Kakis too. keppelite

ACTIVe SAMARITANS In line with its vision to

offer a greater spread of activities and impact a more diverse group of beneficiaries, Keppel Volunteers started the year by helping a number of significant causes. These include diving the seas for coral conservation and rolling up their sleeves to spring-clean homes for the aged.

For the Coral Nursery Project,

which is situated near Pulau Semakau, four volunteers dived on 8 January 2011. Three of them were first-time participants in the Project, which Keppel Volunteers has committed to support since 2007.

The conservation programme involves Keppel d ivers shifting the coral fragments

Keppel Volunteers’ divers and their counterparts from National Parks helping to rehabilitate the corals

developed with the intent of reaching out to volunteers based on their interests, whether it is photography, diving, counseling, first-aid or other hobbies. They will also cater to Keppelites who

wish to participate on an ad hoc basis.

To attract more participants, K e p p e l Vo l u n t e e r s i s exploring a wider variety of programmes such as working

growing in the nursery to a breakwater area. The divers also clean the corals, as it is an important step to help the corals “breathe”. Their efforts contribute towards maximising the survival rate of the corals and e n h a n c e t h e m a r i n e habitats.

Yu Par Maw, Assistant Systems Analyst at Keppel Shipyard, is an experienced diver and shared her thrills and fu l f i l lment of the experience. She said, “The water visibility was bad, especially when you brush off the silt from the coral. At some points, I was even upside down, reaching out to the corals.

“Despite the challenge, the fact that under our care, the corals will grow healthily is enough of a reason to keep me going back. I would like to contribute to preserving the vibrancy of the underwater world.”

While the four volunteers braved the waves and chal lenges underwater, 30 others from Keppel Volunteers brought a buzz to the usually sedate one-room flats of the elderly at Moral Senior Activity Centre

The b iggest cha l lenge though , was no t the backbreaking work, but the need to use sign language and broken dialect to cajole and persuade the elderly to throw away expired canned food and other broken things.

“Seeing the poor living conditions of the elderly

spurs me to do whatever I can to improve their lives. Our little contribution of time and effort goes a long way in impacting their lives.

“The smi les on their faces as they waved and bade us farewell were simply priceless. Besides, volunteering with like-minded colleagues made the act more enjoyable too,” shared Lim Xuehui, HR Executive, Keppel Corporation.

Keppel’s adopted charity, the Association for Persons with Special Needs.

The introduction of the new logo is meant to reflect this new direction and vision as

Keppel Volunteers grows beyond its current base in Singapore to include Keppel’s business units overseas.

The strong vibrant red of the logo conveys the passion

and strength of Keppelites while the ‘V’ for volunteers is fashioned like a human figure to communicate compassion and empathy.
