Recent news of how the Singapore Women’sEverest Team successfully scaled the world’s tallestmountain was a source of inspiration to manySingaporeans. That five ladies hailing from a smalltropical island could accomplish such a feat is anexample we can all take heart from.

The conquest of Everest embodies the values ofpassion, tenacity, resilience and enterprise. Theyhave demonstrated that by embracing thesevalues, dreams can become reality.

At Keppel, these are the values that define ourCan-do! spirit. Tenacity to overcome the odds is atrait we not only recognise but encourage and inthe group, opportunities to exercise this qualityabound, at work or play.

The upcoming Keppel Games in August willprovide platform for healthy competition, teamwork, camaraderie as well as individualchallenges. Already, Keppelites have startedtraining sessions as teams for the coveted title ofoverall champion for the games.

Come September, the Clipper Round the WorldYacht Race will see four Keppel Ambassadors on asea-faring adventure to discover new horizons andovercome personal limits as they crew the UniquelySingapore yacht sponsored by Keppel.

For most of us, overcoming obstacles is part andparcel of our work, daily. Each of us may have ourown Everest to conquer, be it a major project, adifficult colleague or an unconvinced customer. Tosurmount these challenges requires patience, resilience and not least, planning and enterprise.

Conquering Everest took the Singapore Women’sEverest Team five years of planning and training.

Keppel too believes in the value of training. Thereis a slew of diverse and robust HR programmes

available to empower Keppelites so that they canmove out of their comfort zones and take on newchallenges.

The recent Global General ManagementProgramme (see page 20 for story) aimed toeducate, empower and energise managers fromour offices worldwide with the exchange of ideasand training.

While the Group is committed to investingresources on training and development, as well asproviding platforms for growing careers, the onusis on us to make the best use of theseopportunities.

This is even more pertinent in the current economiccrisis. Such times compel us to ready ourselves withskills, mindset and enterprise to seek and seize newopportunities in an already crowded market place.

Keppelites have, time and time again, demonstrated their wherewithal to withstand anywhirlwinds that come their way. It is this Can-Dospirit that has helped us to become the choicesolutions provider of urban living, be it throughthe mammoth rigs we build, the premier propertieswe develop or the state-of-the-art power andwater plants we construct.

Photographer Stefen Chow, who is currently doinga photo essay on Keppel Shipyard’s SafetyExcellence 2010 journey, summitted Everest backin 2005 and is a close friend to the SingaporeWomen’s Everest Team. He shared, “People oftenask me if climbing Mount Everest has changed mylife: The act of scaling the mountain didn’t, butthe planning and training certainly did.”

Keppel FELS has reduced itsoverall number of incidentsfrom 75 cases a year ago to54 in June 2009. Hand andfinger injuries, which makeup a substantial portion ofthe incidents, also droppedfrom 33 cases to 26 duringthe same period.

These results were revealedat the culmination of therecent Health SafetyEnvironment (HSE) campaignon hand and finger injuriesin June.

This year’s campaign sportedan element of fun witheducational games andquizzes and a catchy safety

“When we talk about safety, zero incidents will always beour target, and one incidentis too many. As a team, westill have a lot to do toachieve our goal,” said MaxGoh, Mechanical SystemManager (Piping Section) atKeppel FELS and Chairmanof this year’s campaigncommittee.

“We must continue tocommunicate and supervise

so as to maintain a high levelof safety awareness. Eventhough this safety campaignhas ended, our efforts toachieve zero incidents willcontinue,” he added.

This year’s campaign alsodrew strong participationfrom Keppel FELS’s sizeablegroup of subcontractors andtheir workers.

“The campaign this year isvery different from previousyears’ because the workershad hands-on learning onhow to identify and controlhazards. The games makethe workers think and plancarefully before they make

any move. This applieswhen we are on site whereplanning is very important,”shared Hari Krushna,Engineer, Siong LengEngineering Pte Ltd.

Echoing Krushna’s views,C. Karuppaiah, PaintingSupervisor, New & NovelEngineering Pte Ltd, said, “Ifeel that this year’s campaignis very good because there ismore engagement with theworkers. My workers havelearnt that planning beforeexecuting the job is veryimportant as this can helpidentify potential safetyproblems beforehand. I hopethat we can have this exerciseonce every six months. Thiswill help to remind ourworkers about safety.”

Urging the workforce tobe even more vigilant,Mr Tong Chong Heong, CEOof Keppel Offshore &Marine, said, “In strivingtowards an incident-freeworkplace, we need thecommitment, cooperationand active involvement ofall parties, employees andsubcontractors alike.”

“Do not let it be a one-offevent,” Mr Tong stressed.“Our collective effortsmust continue to producetangible results. With theactive involvement of allstakeholders, we will be ableto turn our vision of ‘zeroincidents, zero loss’ intoreality.” keppelite

At times, it is frenetically busywith the air filled with theubiquitous roar of hundredsof motorbikes streaming inthe direction of the century-old opera house in the citycentre while it is tropicallylanguorous at others. Aside from conductingin-house training to improveservice levels, teamworkand clear communicationare vital success keys, said Nancy. “A ‘yes’ inVietnamese culture does notnecessarily mean the personunderstands or agrees withyou, but it is merely asan acknowledgement ofunderstanding what youhave said.

“Having learnt that, I nowrequest for my subordinatesto repeat in their own

On her first overseas workposting, the gregariousNancy admits, “Initially, I wasquite worried about havingto relocate my family, especially my two childrenwho are seven and nine yearsold respectively.

“When I arrived, I foundHanoi a place with lots ofscenic views and friendlypeople. The living andschooling conditions are alsonot as bad as I had expectedand my children haveadapted well. So for myadvice is always have anopen mind, make an effortto know the locals instead ofmingling only with the expatcommunity, and embrace thedifferences.”

Practicing what shepreaches, Nancy shared thatshe has made the effort tobond with the local staff byattending their weddings, joining them in local festivecelebrations such as theVietnamese New Year, andeven witnessing theacceptance ceremony of astaff as a member in theCommunist Party.

Striking up friendshipsNot even the wet morningweather could dampen thespirits of the students fromthe Association for Personswith Special Needs (APSN) on13 June 2009.

The group had been eagerlyanticipating to spend timeduring the school holidayswith the Keppel Volunteersat the Jurong Superbowl.

Before pounding the lanes, the Volunteers patientlyexplained the rules of thegame and divided thestudents into groups for thefriendly competition.

Despite the various levels ofbowling skills amongst theAPSN students, excitementran high at the alley.

During the first few rounds, many started off with gutterballs but with some guidanceand encouragement fromthe Volunteers, the studentsstarted to improve their aimas well as their scores.

One of the petite participantsinitially did not even have the

strength to grasp thebowling ball. She feltdisheartened and wanted togive up trying as she wasunable to score any points. To keep her in the game andinculcate a fighting spirit, herKeppel Volunteer buddysuggested an alternativemethod of ball-rolling, suchthat it would not requireas much strength out ofher. She persevered andcompleted all 10 rounds ofbowling, to her delight.

Keppel Volunteers hadthoughtfully brought along acolour printer to ensure thateveryone could bring backwith them, photographstaken with their teams askeepsakes. These weredistributed over lunch wherethe students recountedexcitedly their bowlingexperience.

The Keppel Volunteerscertainly scored on friendshipand goodwill by giving thestudents a ball of a time.keppelite
