My dear fellow alumni, it is with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as president of Western Iowa Tech Community College eective July 26, 2011. I have had the honor and privilege to serve as WITCC’s president for the past 20 years. During that time, the College has prospered and grown, new campuses were constructed, new programs were created to meet the changing needs of our communities, business partnerships were developed, college facilities were expanded, and The Security Institute and new dorms were built. Our most recent development is the new Student Life and Wellness Center which the College Board of Directors voted to name the “Dr. Robert E. Dunker Student Center.” I was honored and extremely humbled by this kind gesture. It is scheduled to open this summer, and many other exciting changes are on the horizon. It is my hope that the next president will take the College from where I am

leaving it and vault it to new heights that none of us can imagine today.

Local tax dollars that support WITCC go directly to training the local workforce, which increases the skilled labor pool and the overall economic health of the area. In fact, 82 percent of WITCC graduates reside in Iowa, and 97 percent reside in IA, NE, and SD. (Data Source: WITCC Institutional Research)

The local community college levy tax helps support educational programs for careers that aect our daily lives including police ocers, reghters, nurses, pharmacy techs, carpenters, accountants, auto repair technicians, childcare providers, veterinary technicians, dental assistants, paramedics, and more.

WITCC has provided educational opportunities to well over 190,000 people since its inception in 1966. Chances are you or someone you know has been directly impacted by WITCC. (Data Source: WITCC Institutional Research)

We know most of our alumni are civic-minded, active voters, but some of you may not be aware how easy it is to vote.

In fact, your absentee ballots may be sent to you through the U.S. Postal Service. Requesting an absentee ballot or voter registration form is as easy as visiting our website at: http://www.witcc.edu/alumni_friends/

Once you have lled out your voter registration form and/or absentee ballot request form, just return them to your county auditor also listed at our website. Once your county auditor receives your absentee ballot request form and/or voter registration form, they will mail a voting ballot and/or voter registration card to your home.

Make sure to put the date for this year’s School Board Election on your calendar: September 13

full-time, he went back to school and

earned his B.S.; M.A.; and Ph.D.

After his rst teaching position,

employment with community colleges

would be a reoccurring theme

throughout his educational career. He

would eventually serve as a Division

Chair, Campus Dean, Vice President for

Instruction, and President, all with

community colleges.

Who is this man, you ask? You may

have even met him, he’s Dr. Robert E.

Dunker, WITCC president for over 20

years!

Dr. Dunker is a great testimony to

the value of a community college

education. As Dr. Dunker likes to say,

he owes his start to WITCC and the

Iowa Community College system.

“WITCC, it’s the best place to start!”

Over 40 years ago, there was a young

man struggling to nd his way. He didn’t

know what he wanted to do with his life

and was just taking odd jobs to get by.

His parents were concerned he’d never

amount to much and lacked direction.

Not knowing exactly what the future had

in store for him, he decided to give

Western Iowa Tech Community College a

try. In 1967, he earned his A.A.S. in

Mechanical Design and Drafting. Turns

out that decision would serve him well

for the rest of his life. He had no idea

how well.

His rst position after graduation was a

Drafting and Design Department

Manager with Dale Electronics, Inc. in

Yankton, South Dakota. After working in

the industry for ve years, he decided to

go into teaching at the college level. That

love affair with teaching inspired him to

continue his education. While working
