Chairman’s Village Update

I have requested a new “Ingarsby Road” sign opposite Kings Lane from HDC due to the damage that has been done; it should be replaced within the next couple of weeks.

Ingarsby Road has more Twists and Turns than usual

KEYHAM NEWS

…… continuation If you could again give me some indication as to whether you would like this; my view is that we have several benches in the village already and I'm unsure as to where another would go. A meeting has been held between myself and the residents at the bottom corner of Kings Lane regarding the 2 Yew trees. They have been reduced in height in the past and are now looking rather unsightly. A decision has been made to level the top & raise the bottom in hope that they will eventually grow into a yew hedge. This will also enable Harborough to mow the verge as they have been unable to in the past. I shall be re vamping the village website over the course of August so keep an eye out if anyone would like anything adding onto the website please let me know. For those of you who don't know we have a village website I've added the address below:

http://www.keyhamparish.org.uk

On a final note I would like to inform you all of the village’s new Keyham Conservation Committee (KCC), a healthy 5 members (or so they tell me!) are as follows:

Lois Jerman, Fiona Dowsett, David Hannah, Anne Markee & Jez Holdsworth.

Thank you all for giving your time to support such a very important committee. Have a wonderful August. Samantha

August

As August arrives again so does our annual Pet Service in Hungarton for the whole Benefice. So whichever village you live in come and join us and bring your pet, Cat, Dog, Rabbit or Iguana… we don’t mind and if your pet is too large or too wet to bring – fear not – we have had photo’s or videos of pets brought instead of the pet themselves. It might seem strange, or even a little ‘Dibley’, to hold such a service, but each year as we do so I’m reminded of the wonder of God’s creation, of all the animals we share this planet with. From the large Whales of Blue Planet to the tiniest pet we share our homes with, we are part of the same beautiful creation and it is this we celebrate when we gather together for our Pet service. Please join us if you can, with or without Pet, to celebrate our beautiful earth and all its inhabitants large and small. Revd Alison

Keyham Croquet: “Goes Up, In Smoke” It was Anna's Birthday on the 18th July and we found what we believe to be the only croquet pitch in central London. It's at the Skylight Bar, Tobacco Dock, Wapping - nearest station is Shadwell. Not willing to be robbed of our annual croquet tournament in Keyham, we celebrated in style! Regards, Anthony & Vicky

Soaring

Lancaster’s shape in flight silhouettes the sky

as a bird of prey and a spitfire’s zip

hums in wasp aggression unequalled by the jet –

a swooping screaming gull which preys with distant eye;

all echoes of aggression in the discipline of flight,

entailed energy thrusting space aside

ready for the next affaire in man’s intrusive rite.

Worra Loss

Had that World Cup arrived

would it have held our T for now we’ve lost that too,

recently gone missing perhaps away with G, but it can’t be English

not to have our tea as a timbre of content

to make entirety, so we should have won

to save us from becoming a repuding nashun

when we should have reputation.

[Worra – what a] [Repuding – from repudiate, reject

(both have T’s)] [Nashun – nation without T]

Oddly

Hugh and Cry Sam

We awake a moment

on a summer’s day for a plebiscite

to elect our choice as liaison with outside; a cutting commentary on village life a breast

awoke a vote for comely, so one of hippie heart

with a pony tale of promise will pick up her musket

to guard our fortress of content.

Dawn Express

As that silent gleam sleeks the night away,

a chorus of intent on nature’s rousing radio greets the dawn of day,

announcers’ thrilling trills meting out a rescue

from the silent roosts of night, where darker songs of plight

from the neighing mares of our inner sight

nail those alien shades now set aside in dawning;

not terror now but territory asserts in early light,

bold airs of courting song and pigeons’ round resound

echo a content with chiming chatter warning

solo caws on unjust cause, while a flustered pheasant whirrs away from plight;

all echo nature’s dawning before man’s engine sound

drowns the rousing day.

The borne release of dandelion seeding from a tufty sphere, carriers on a zestful breeze

or rapid respiration soft streams of downy dreams

in the hope of propagate a flower of golden content

before the shadow of reality consumes that grail of reverie.

2018 Clash

No clip or clap,

no hidden laugh from a nearby game,

swards of silence sheathed today,

their undrawn hoops without a duel to play,

no excuse to fight to take cakes and tea.

HUNGARTON & KEYHAM WI NEWS

Hungarton & Keyham WI Celebrates 100 Years

On a perfect summer afternoon, without a cloud in the sky, Hungarton & Keyham WI were joined by members of the Robin a Tiptoe group for a tea party to celebrate our WI’s 100th birthday. It was held in the garden of Manor House, which was bedecked with bunting. Members past and present enjoyed sandwiches, cakes and tea (it was a WI do after all!). It was really appreciated that a number of past members could make it, particularly Julia Hodson and Julia Hincks both who left the village many years ago and who travelled considerable distances to be there. Incidentally, Julia Hincks, nee Greasley, was born in the Black Boy and lived in Hungarton for 42 years. Janet Kirk, President of the Leicestershire and Rutland Federation, congratulated us on reaching this auspicious milestone and the afternoon concluded with Prosecco and a slice of cake decorated with our WI logo. Penny Faulkner, Treasurer

June Garden Meeting Paul Dixon of Dixon’s Farm took us by tractor and trailer through his farmland to visit his lovely wildflower meadows. On the way we saw his owl nesting boxes, which were surprisingly large and cattle. Paul explained why he has chosen certain breeds. At the meadows we saw Yellow Rattle, Oat Grass, Timothy Grass, Red Clover, Vetch and Wild Sorrel which we ate. Paul explained the management of his wild meadows. On our return we stopped at the lake and conservatory and saw a new enterprise; glamping tents, which looked great. On our return we had a slap up supper in one of the barns. Thanks again Paul for a great evening. Karen Holmes

Beside the Seaside: Filling in the Blanks Having studied the “Beside the Seaside” photograph from KN July, Don Hull has been able to identify most of those pictured (including himself!). Back Row: Clifford Treadwell, Small Girl Unknown, Valerie Linney, Sylvia Hubbard, Linda Crozier, Maureen Harrison, Helen Treadwell Front Row: Don Hull, Unknown, Fiona Halliday, Julia Harrison, Mike Treadwell (not Ian Chambers)

Please let KN know if you can identify either of the two “unknowns”.

Don tells KN that the Treadwells lived at Blackthorn Farm, Valerie Linney lived at No.1 School Cottage, Sylvia Hubbard lived in the top Rural Cottage on Kings Lane, Linda Crozier lived at Montana Cottage. The Voss boys featured in the “Egg & Spoon Race” photograph lived at one of the cottages that stood on what is now the D&G car park before moving to the end Rural Cottage on Ingarsby Road. Don, having lived in Keyham for 68 years, is Keyham’s “longest serving” resident but he hasn’t change a bit as readers can see from these two photographs…..

Who Owns the Black Cat? As a result of the death of our kitten we have decided that the perpetrator must be caught before he possibly strikes again. We and others have seen a black cat, with some white on its breast and what appears to be a bare patch on his back, in various parts of the village and believe he is a stray who may be unneutered. We are borrowing a cage to capture it and we will decide what subsequent action to take in conjunction with the Cats Protection League. If this cat matches the description of a cat that is owned by someone in the village, however, we would appreciate you letting us know. If we don't hear anything we will assume it’s a stray. Carole and Tony Johnson

Hungry and Thirsty Wildlife We have had some much needed rain this weekend but the weather indications for the next week do not seem to be promising much more. Perhaps if you could put out a large saucer of water, with pebbles or sticks in it, so that the bees do not drown, it would be appreciated. I feed the birds throughout the year but have been surprised to notice that the feeders are emptied almost every day, which is more than they are in the winter, and this, without the help of the jackdaws and squirrels which do not seem be around here at present. Either there are a lot more mouths to feed or there is not much seed around elsewhere. Elizabeth
