Activity 1: Students will probably remember that adjectives describe nouns and adverbs describe verbs. Remind students that a very popular type of adverb ends in “ly.” Reinforce this understanding by showing the following chart. Have students read each phrase from the chapter book, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Discuss the words or phrases that have highlighted adjectives and adverbs.
ADJECTIVES ADVERBS sticking the gooey piece (chapter 8) had eagerly explained (ch. 6) brilliant flash of gold (chapter 11) were practically starving (ch. 16) funny long hair (chapter15) white and spotlessly clean(ch. 18) two naughty little children (chapter 22) simply covered with garbage (ch. 29) gigantic covered vans (chapter 29) just terrifically excited (ch. 28)
Activity 2: Display the following short paragraph for student viewing. Discuss the adverbs and adjectives that are used throughout the paragraph by highlighting those words.
The talented cheerleaders were loudly screaming at the ballgame. Everyone was super excited because the ballgame was tied. The home team had the ball. The boys were slowly moving the ball up the shiny floor. With two seconds left, swish, the spinning ball fell smoothly through the net. The crowd exploded wildly!
Remind students that adjectives can tell what kind or how many. Refer to the chart and paragraph for support.
