Exercise name: Key skills in different jobs

Theoretical background: Key skills have become an important

concept in the UK where they are used todescribe the generic (i.e. not job-specific)skills which are needed by students in theircourses and employees in their jobs.

Target group: Students aged 14 19

Exercise description: The concept of key skills is introduced andthe skills themselves are identified, usingstudent feedback in the first instance.

Students are then given a range of jobs andasked to identify which skills are neededand how they are used.

Pedagogical aim: To make the students think about the skillsthey will require in work and how these canbe developed at school and university.

Time: 60 minutes

Resources needed: Photocopier

Key Skills in Different Jobs Teacher Notes

Ask the class to brainstorm:a) how many key skills there areb) what those key skills arec) why key skills are important - and to whom

Answers:a) 6b) communication,

application of number,IT,

working with others,problem solvingimproving own learning and performance.

c) they are important in personal and professionallife. You may be asked about your key skillsduring an interview for college, university, a job orwith a training provider.

Ask the class if they can think of examples for each key skill.

Divide the class into up to 7 small groups and distribute a set of worksheets Key Skills in Different Jobs to each group.

Ask them to think of the key skills that that job would require and enter the answers inthe first column. In the second column they need to enter when that key skill may beused.For example, receptionist communication used when dealing with enquiries on thetelephone and receiving visitors.

Not all of the jobs will involve use of all the key skills.

When completed, ask students to complete a worksheet on another job.

Allow time for feedback and discussion on the task.
