NEWS FROM SECONDARY STUDIES… Year 11 Striving For Excellence Day – Thurs 22 Feb 18 Guest speakers, teaching staff and students enjoyed another excellent day at the Kiama Pavilion, exploring ways to make the senior years of study less stressful, more organised and more productive. Jane Sherlock delivered her customary highly-professional and engaging presentation (which she developed just for us!) on the mandatory Reading to Write component of the new Stage 6 English syllabus, after the students were introduced by Nathan Vickery (our school counsellor) to the Smiling Minds app. Mary Cooper reiterated the key concepts of the ALARM strategy for improving extended responses and analytical writing that the students learnt at the recent Writing, Assessment & Response tutorials at school. Students attended three sessions of small group tutorials that they selected from a range of 11 possibilities, including Aligning Values & Goals, Mastering Mathematics, Excellence in Essay Writing, Careers & Post School Opportunities, Success in Science, Cultures of Thinking, Research & Information Skills and Study Organisation. Although Yoga & Meditation did not run on the day, a huge ‘thank-you’ to Merrin Perez from Boutique Yoga in Gerringong for her enthusiastic response to our request for her expertise. It’s always wonderful when our local community supports our school’s programs to improve the learning lives of our students.

As usual, KHS benefited from the fabulous facilities at the Kiama Pavilion and the friendly and professional assistance from Jackie and Hope. Nothing is too much trouble!

2018 Tell Them From Me Student Surveys Like many other public schools in the state, Kiama High School will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey measures factors that are known to affect academic achievement and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW wide survey is on student wellbeing, engagement and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au

The survey is a great opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. More than 6,300 schools in Australia and around the world have used Tell Them From Me to survey 5.4 million students. Capturing the voices of our students will help improve how we do things at Kiama High School.

The survey is confidential and is conducted online, taking less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be administered during school hours between 29 March and 13 April.

A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey is being sent home with students. If you do not want your child or children to participate, please return the form to school by Friday 23rd March. Copies of the form and FAQs are available from: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/information-for-parents.

If your child suffers from any ongoing health issues and requires any medication to be kept in the office, please phone 42321 911 to organise correct paperwork. NESA CHANGES TO HSC MINIMUM STANDARD There have been some important changes made to the HSC Minimum Standard. Please see attachment. Note that the changes DO NOT impact on our current Year 10 students.

OPEN BOYS CRICKET BOW OUT Unfortunately, the Open Boys’ cricket side was defeated by an enthusiastic Warilla team who scored 101 runs off their allotted 40 overs. Hugo Ikeda and Matt Laughton bowled well and were well supported by Tasman Berry, Callum Young, Cade Hotham and Cooper Harrison. Fletcher Allerby and Mitchell Micallef shared the wicket keeping duties, doing a good job behind the stumps. Tim Wade took a couple of sharp catches. In reply we got off to a shaky start. We lost the wickets of Cooper, Oliver Wilbraham and Harry Grant in quick succession, who all got bowled out to some excellent deliveries. Fletcher and Tasman then set about resurrecting the innings until a mishap between the wickets saw Tasman run out for 20. Fletcher lost his wicket soon after for 26. Despite a gallant rear guard action from Hayden Presland and Matt Laughton, we fell 16 runs short of the total. This ends the school cricketing campaigns of all the Year 11 boys. To Fletcher, Tasman, Callum, Tim and Oliver, we thank you for your service and commitment over the years. To the younger brigade, we will regroup and see you next year. Mr Berry

ZONE SWIMMING CARIVAL REPORT Congratulations to all students who represented Kiama High at the Shoalhaven Zone swimming Carnival at Bomaderry last week. Despite gutsy efforts from all our swimmers on the day, Ulladulla High proved

to be too strong overall to take out the Champion School Trophy, with Kiama coming 2nd ahead of Vincentia, Nowra, Shoalhaven and Bomaderry High Schools. One of the highlights of the day was Liam Williams breaking a 19 yr old record in the 17+yrs 50m freestyle, swimming 26+ seconds – that’s fast! Liam has now represented the school and Shoalhaven Zone for 6 consecutive years – a commendable achievement. Another highlight was the school spirit shown by our senior swimmers, with us fielding a full complement in both the 17yrs boys and girls relay events – congratulations and thank you to Tegan Farmer, Zoe Cook, Josie Mansell, Sophie Taylor, Liam Williams, Jake Lawrance, Nathan Cowgill and Emilio Goytizolo. These students proved to be excellent role models for our younger swimmers. Final results and the team list for the South Coast Swimming Carnival should be available soon. Students should listen to the daily announcements in roll call for further information.

ENCORE CONCERT SYDNEY OPERA HOUSE On Monday 19 th February, 18 Senior Music students, accompanied by Mr Graham Deans and Mrs Louise Luke, attended the Encore Concert at the Sydney Opera House. The Encore concert is made up of around 20 of the most outstanding HSC music performances from 2017.

Two of Kiama High School students from the 2017 Music Class (Clayton Condon, and Elaine Hevia) were nominated. The Kiama High School students were exemplary in behaviour and enjoyed many varied performances and compositions. The concert was composed of a range of styles and instruments, including the Pipe Organ, Harpsichord, Vocalists, a Saxophone Quartet, Pianists a rock group etc. It was a wonderful experience and one we are grateful is organised by the Arts Unit each year and supported by our executive at Kiama High.

UNIFORM SHOP OPENING HOURS Tuesdays 10.30am-2.30pm Fridays 11am-3pm Parents/Carers are asked to check your child’s uniform before they leave home for school. It is very important that students comply with the school uniform policy for child wellbeing reasons. Teachers can quickly identify and isolate intruders on the school grounds as they would probably not be in a school uniform. Black shorts, jeans and tops are not part of the school uniform. Please contact the school should you need support in ensuring that your child is complying with the school uniform policy. Cash and Eftpos Only Please be considerate with closing times.

MUSEUM VISIT On Friday, the 16th of Febuary Year 11 and 12 Photography students travelled to the Museum of Contempoary Art in Sydney. Students engaged and explored Swiss artist Pipillotti Rist’s ‘Sip on My Ocean’ major exhibition. The students who attended could all agree; it was breathtaking. Students engaged and were immersed in large scale audio-visual installations and immersive interactive environments

Boat Smart Training Day, 2017 Last year, during Term 4, students from Years 10 & 11 Marine Studies classes got to attend the ‘Boat Smart Training Day’ on Lake Illawarra. Fortunately, it was a beautiful day on the lake and thanks to the Illawarra Yacht Club (who provided free use of their facilities) students were provided with a wonderful opportunity to experience the thrills of boating. The ‘Boat Smart Training Day’ program is run by the Marine Teachers Association of NSW. The program has been funded up until the end of 2017 by the Boating Industry of Australia. It allows students in NSW to obtain their boat licence for a fraction of the normal cost. Here’s how it works: 1. Students spend the term studying the NSW Boating Licence Handbook in class and complete a workbook; 2. Students then spend the day learning essential boating skills and knowledge on the lake, which meets all the practical requirements needed to obtain a boating licence. 3. Students sit a theory examination in class. If they pass, they can get their very own boat licence.

It was a great privilege to have Mr Brendon Fotheringham from the Five Islands Secondary College as our assessor and Captain for the training day. ‘Fotho’ as he is affectionately known, taught the students everything from launching and driving a boat, navigating, turning, and parking a boat. He also demonstrated, how to care for and maintain a modern power boat. Students also learnt how to paddle plastic moulded dingies and practised capsize drills. We were also privileged to have Mr Ray Lonsdale, the Boating Education Officer from the Roads & Maritime Service, present on the day. Ray taught the students all about the essential boating safety equipment required for being on the water. He also obtained special permission to ignite both orange smoke flares and red night flares. For a list of safety equipment required to be carried on boats, copy this link into your web browser: http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/maritime/safety-rules/safety- equipment/index.html All in all, it was a fantastic day both on and off the water. Fotho & Ray also visited our school to deliver a presentation and conduct the boating theory examination. Numerous students went on to obtain their adult boating licence at a fraction of the normal cost. A big thanks must also go to Hunts Marine, who provide the boat, trailor, engine and equipment for the ‘Boat Smart Training Day’ program. Please take note, as of January 2018, lifejacket regulations for canoes and kayaks have changed. It is now compulsory to wear a lifejacket on any of these water craft when on the water. writing and Ken interviewed local RSL’s, local Historical Societies and family member’s of the war veterans from the Great War who’s names appear on the wall of Gerringong Memorial.

The book launch for “Names on the Wall” was held on 11 November 2017. This was a very special and memorable day, and very fitting to be held on Remembrance Day. This book remembers the lives of the local soldiers who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918. Their memories will live on through this book.

A copy of the “Names on the Wall” Will be kept in the state and national libraries as well as the local schools in Kiama and Gerringong and Jamberoo. Each year the Kiama library will hold a photographic or writing competition in memory of Ken.
