The Kiama Kingfisher’s 2014-2015 season will commence on Sunday 19th October, 2014 at 9.45am sharp on Surf Beach at the Kiama Surf Live Saving Club.

Introduction;

Kiama Kingfisher’s is held most Sunday mornings with an arrival time of 9:30am in preparation for a 9:45am sharp start. Children in the Under 8’s and above age groups are also encouraged to compete in Carnivals as Carnivals are great fun and offer a wide range of events, greatly improve fitness, surf/self-confidence and enhance team spirit. We encourage nippers of any ability to be involved.

Nippers start learning about Surf awareness and safety through Surf Life Saving Surf Education Program (Surf Ed). They are also able to participate in board paddling, surfing, swimming, running, wading and other fun activities and games.

Practicing these skills allows children to compete in Club, Regional and State Surf Life Saving Carnivals representing their clubs. While competition is an element, the surf awareness and education aspect is a primary aim. Children are taught from the earliest ages how to respect, read the surf and use the surf to their advantage.

The 2014-2015 Season Calendar is also supplied within this booklet for a complete listing of the seasons Times and Dates, always refer to it for the most up to date scheduling information. (Refer to Pages 17 and 18 for the 2014-2015 Calendar)

Kiama Surf Life Saving Club Info;

Kiama Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. is a member of the South Coast Branch which in turn is affiliated with the NSW state body.

Surf Beach is home to Kiama Surf Life Saving Club. Surf beach is approximately 250m long, Church point is located to the north and Kendall’s point is located to the south. Kiama oval sits on Church Point, a park surrounds the back of the beach with the surf club in the center.

The Kiama SLSC is committed to Kiama, its surrounding communities and their welfare. Our club prides itself on its friendly atmosphere, strong competition and the promotion of a healthy life style within our local community by promoting and teaching surf, health and life skills.

This has long been a very popular beach due to its location close to the center of Kiama. The club was formed in 1908 and at that time people from Sydney would commute by train to Kiama to swim at Surf beach and see the famous Kiama

Blowhole. The Club also celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2008, one of a hand full of clubs in all of Australia to achieve this magnificent milestone.

The Kiama Kingfisher’s (Nippers) is an arm of the Kiama Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. and is managed by a committee which is elected annually at the Kingfishers Annual General Meeting (AGM). The committee is chaired by the Junior Activities Coordinator (JAC) – Sean Walter) who is also a members of the Kiama Surf Lifesaving Club Executive committee.

The Kingfishers committee is responsible for organizing, arranging and funding all junior activities. Included in the committee are all the members listed in the Kingfisher Committee Members section of this booklet. (Refer to Page 20 of this booklet for the Kingfisher Committee Members).

Remember, the committee members are parents just like you who volunteer their time to help children in surf awareness as well as providing resources for a child’s personal development.

Kiama Kingfishers Main Objectives;

1. For all Kiama Kingfishers to enjoy themselves and have fun.

2. That all Kiama Kingfishers will become competent in the surf and have a good knowledge of “surf awareness”.

3. Introduce Kiama Kingfishers to the surf lifesaving movement.

Achieving our second goal will provide each junior with confidence in all aspects of Surf Lifesaving. The necessary character building and self-discipline will be achieved whilst doing something each child enjoys.

A Typical Morning at the Kiama Kingfishers;

The Kiama Kingfishers assemble on the lawn at the front of the clubhouse in their appropriate age groups prior to the commencement of activities.

All Kingfishers must have their attendance recorded by the age managers who have been assigned to their age group at the start of Nippers. This is done primarily as a safety precaution and as a method of recording attendance; a point is awarded each week as a Kingfisher signs off and this is then tallied. Nippers who achieve a minimum attendance of 75% are eligible for an award at the end of the season.

All Kingfishers should arrive ready to start activities, with their Navy Blue Kiama cap on and sun protection/sun screen applied by 9:30am each week in preparation for the start of Nippers, Punctual arrival is vital so that Age Managers can record attendance and be aware of who is present before starting activities. In addition weekly notices are announced at this time. It can also be time consuming for parents trying to find a child’s age group once the kids have hit the beach.

Under the control of their age managers, Kingfishers then take part in fun on the beach and in the water. The Under 6’s, 7’s and Under 8 age groups are encouraged to wade at the shore through the water every week in an effort to learn how to negotiate shallow water and to gain confidence in the water. Scheduled activities are on the season calendar are subject to change dependent on beach conditions

All Kingfishers must be signed off as a safety precaution at the conclusion of activities by their respective age managers. We cannot stress how important this is as a method a tracking and ensuring that no child has gone missing during the course of Nippers. If necessary to leave early ensure your age manager has been informed so your child’s attendance can be recorded and their name marked from the attendance list. Remember the recording of attendance is your responsibility.

As a parent or guardian you are required to be present on the beach at all times during activities. A Child will not be signed off at the end of Kingfishers without a parent present.

Parents are requested to be on accessible at all times during Nippers and to resume responsibility (for their children) at the conclusion of the day’s events.

If any child has special needs it is highly recommended that you inform your Age Manager of such needs so they can be aware of the child’s requirements.

Children MUST obtain their parents’ permission prior to re-entering the water after Nippers concludes and should you have to leave before events are finished, please inform your child's Age Manager BEFORE taking your child from the beach.

- Parents Becoming Age Managers;

The club operates entirely from volunteer help. The Kiama SLSC heavily values the contribution made by parents – this is what makes our club great. There are many jobs to be filled and parent involvement is a vital part of running the Kiama Kingfishers program.

As a club we encourage every parent to complete to Age Managers Training as it is a requirement that every Parent that wishes to assist with Nippers complete the SLSA Age Managers training (Refer to Page 6 of this booklet for the Age Manager criteria), those parents without the SLSA Age Manager accreditation will Not be allowed to assist at Nippers while on the beach or in the water.

For those these parents that do not have the SLSA Age Manager accreditation there are still vital a roles to play as well in the following areas;

Preliminary Evaluation;

All Kingfishers U6's through to U14's are required to complete the Preliminary Skills Evaluation in order to take part in any water events in the Nippers program. Each Nipper must complete the Preliminary Evaluation.

U6 and U7 Nippers are still only allowed in the water as per the SLSA Age Guides and the SLSA Age Managers Guide (ie. Shallow water activities).

Many activities that will be completed by children as part of junior activities will be conducted in the water. To ensure the safety of all children SLSA has developed a Junior Preliminary Skills Evaluation for each age group.

Every junior member is required to participate in this evaluation, conducted by the club, prior to any junior water activity training or competition being undertaken. It includes a swim and a float which is progressively increased by age group.

Normally this would occur at the very first training session but if not this must be completed before any water activity is undertaken. The intent of this is to conduct an evaluation of each junior member’s own swimming and water survival ability for the information of the member, parent and age manager.

The Preliminary Skills Evaluations will be held at the Kiama Leisure Centre, for dates and times refer to then 2014/2015 Nippers Calendar;

You will be required to pay the pool entry fee.

Note: It is not an assessment which if not completed competently precludes the child from becoming a member or continuing with junior surf education or training activities.

Competition Skills Evaluation;

From the age of 8 (Under 9) juniors can begin to compete in inter-club competition. To ensure that all junior members who wish to compete have the ability, strength and fitness standard to complete the course they must be able to complete the junior competition evaluation for their age group.

The Competition Evaluation is based on the swim distances as set out in the Surf Sports Manual for that associated age group and is a minimum standard guideline in the form of an open water swim, the Competition Evaluation will be conducted at Nippers on a Surf appropriate day shortly after the Kingfishers season commences.

(For those unsure if they plan on attending a Carnival in the 2014/2015 season we strongly suggest every Nipper try and complete the Competition Evaluation as No-one can compete at any carnival without the Competition Evaluation being completed and we do not want any Nippers that change their minds later in the season and want to compete being excluded as a result of not completing this requirement).

Water Safety Requirements;

SLSA Policy 1.1 sets out the risk management procedures and minimum requirements for the provision of water safety for surf lifesaving aquatic activities. This needs to be read in conjunction with the SLSA Updated Water Safety Policy and Procedures v1.1. Access to these documents is via the SLSA Members Portal. Two areas of focus for Junior Activities within the Water Safety Policy and Procedure include a recommendation for use of high visibility garments for aquatic activity participants and water safety personnel.

The key principles of the policy are: Water safety is to be provided for all SLS aquatic activities.

Each activity is to have an appointed water safety supervisor (a leader in the group to oversee safety of nippers).

Water safety supervisors must complete a risk assessment form and record the outcome before the event. Where an unacceptable risk is identified water activities for Kingfishers for that day will be suspended.

Minimum ratios: [Water safety personnel: participants in the water] 1:5 for groups of unqualified participants (with low/medium risk) and 1:4 for high risk 1:12 for groups of qualified participants (SRC/BM qualified).

Water Safety Supervisors and Personnel High Visibility Garments

For SLS junior activities water safety supervisors and personnel must be wearing clearly identified uniforms. It must consist of a cap (secured under the chin) and rash shirt. (This may be either of the following SLSA approved uniforms): 1. Surf Rescue Uniform;

• SLSA red and yellow quartered patrol cap secured under the chin; • SLSA Surf Rescue rash shirt; • Where appropriate, SLS Surf Rescue wetsuits and stinger suits

2. High visibility (water safety) uniform; • A high-visibility (florescent) orange cap secured under the chin; • A high-visibility (florescent) orange rash shirt branded with ‘WATER SAFETY’ on the front

In addition a maximum of 15% may be included for attendance at any other SLSA endorsed event provided that the attendance occurs on the same weekend as a regular Kiama nipper’s morning. This is to allow Nippers who are away on holidays to include participation with other clubs in their total attendance Written/Signed confirmation from the other club must be handed to their Age Manager, Nippers Registrar or JAC within 2 weeks of returning to Kiama.

If a carnival occurs on the same weekend as a regular Kiama nipper’s morning, attendance at the carnival can be used in the 15% mentioned above. It is the nippers’ responsibility to ensure that their attendance at the carnival is recorded by the Carnival Coordinator.

Participation Awards are awarded at the end of year presentation and Kingfishers Annual General Meeting (AGM) (Refer to Page 18 of this booklet for Kingfisher AGM and Presentation Day - Dates and Times)

3. Kiama Kingfisher Perpetual and Major Awards;

To reward excellence in competition the best competitors are presented with any of a variety of awards at the end of year Kingfishers Presentation and AGM. To be eligible the child must also have completed the Participation Award.

The U6 and U7 age groups are not included in the Kingfishers Point Scoring and as such there is no Point Score awards for these age groups, we as a club are more concerned about fun at these ages than competition so we want to ensure that all the U6 and U7 Kingfishers are graded equally.

Kiama Kingfishers has several Major Awards and the following will detail the criteria for receiving one of these Major Awards;

Competitor of the Year;

1. Kingfisher attendance of 75% during the 2014-2015 season. 2. Highest total of points accumulated during Kiama Kingfisher Point Score

days (Refer to the Point Scoring Events section on Page 12 of this booklet)

combined with the total accumulated Carnivals points for the 2014-2015 season.

3. Awarded to 2 Kingfishers (1 Male and 1 Female) across all group (U8’s through to U14’s).

Carnival Competitor of the Year;

1. Kingfisher attendance of 75% during the 2014-2015 season. 2. Highest accumulated total points at Carnivals for the 2014-2015 season. 3. Awarded to 1 Male and 1 Female Kingfisher from each age group (U8’s

through to U14’s).

PointScore Champions;

1. Kingfisher attendance of 75% during the 2014-2015 season. 2. Highest total of points accumulated during Kiama Kingfisher Point Score

days. (Refer to the Point Scoring Events section on Page 12 of this booklet) 3. Awarded to 1 Male and 1 Female Kingfisher Kingfisher from each age

group (U8’s through to U14’s).

4. Point Scoring Events;

We have allocated 4 separate days to conduct Point Scoring for the Kiama Kingfishers as shown in the 2014-2015 Kingfishers Calendar which are marked in Grey, this is to accommodate for any unforeseen poor weather that may arise causing the cancellation of a Point Scoring day.

Of the 4 Point Scoring days only a maximum of 3 will count toward a competitors final total points, what this means is if Kiama Kingfishers run all 4 Point Scoring days the competitor's lowest scoring day will be discarded and the remaining 3 of the 4 days will be tallied to create the competitors total points.

If only 1, 2 or 3 Point Scoring days are held due to weather conditions then all the points accumulated for the those days will count toward a competitor’s total score.

For example if we ran all 4 point scoring events the following table would show how the points would be tallied.

Sample Point Scoring Total

Point Score

#1

Point Score

#2

Point Score

#3

Point Score

#4 Total

22 18 21 20 63

In the above scenario Point Score #2 would be discarded and not tallied as it was the lowest scoring round the competitor registered and hence the total would be 63 points and not 81 as would be the case if all 4 Point Scores were actually tallied.
