Old Fire Station Sales

Another successful week of woodcraft sales was the general consensus from members that had items for sale during the October sale. We had some quite days and some busier ones to make up for the occasional lack of customers, overall I think everyone seemed happy with their return on sales. I’m sure Ted Batty will provide a summary of the week at the forthcoming meeting.

CHRISTMAS ‘GET TOGETHER’

The November monthly meeting (Wednesday 27th) will again be our Christmas venue, rounding off the years activities with the opportunity to congratulate ourselves on a successful 12 months. Have a yarn or two over coffee or tea while enjoying some Christmas fare. After the normal formalities and the usual badge draw we’ll again, like last year, draw for a Lions club Christmas Cake and also a Christmas Pudding. So, please make the effort to attend, hey, you can only win if you come along. Tony Walsh.

The Christmas get together will be discussed in depth at the next meeting, so please make sure your calendar is free for the November meeting to make this a great night, the more the merrier.

*David Bywater showed his relief carving done while tending a workshop at ‘Artisan on the Hill’ run by Allan Williams. *Tony Walsh showed his Japanese-inspired compound joint (three Pieces) followed by showing some small chucks for fine drills purchased from Jacar. *Ted Batty showed a small hollow bowl turned in two separate halves with a fitted lid sporting a fine finial; Camelia was the choice of wood, in Teds words,” great to turn green or dry, the shavings just float over your shoulder.” *David Ross brought along a mystery block of wood, he had them all stumped revealing that it was a block of Sandal-wood, David informed the meeting that it was the heartwood that was the valued part because of its oil content.. Evening speaker: - David Bywater held the interest of the group with his demonstration and detailed explanation of making a Japanese Shoji teapot stand. David’s drawing of his ‘essential’ plan, his jigs and use of a low-angled plane for accurately ‘shooting’ the angles on each end of the small parts and the improvised depth-stop on the saw for making the required ‘hinged-joints’ demonstrated patience, discipline and attention to detail.
