LEGENDARY singer songwriter Billy Bragg plays the Set Theatre tonight (Wednesday). The left wing Londoner, known for his outspoken opinions and witty lyrics, has been plying his trade since the late ‘70s. One of the few artists who bridges punk and folk, he has long been a fixture at Glastonbury where he helps to keep it grounded in its more radical roots. He has recorded dozens of albums as well as a brilliant imagining of Woody Guthrie’s unrecorded work

on ‘Mermaid Avenue’. His 2008 album ‘Mr Love and Justice’ was one of his best and he has also just released an album called ‘Fight Songs’. He has also published non-fiction about English history and recently produced his first play ‘Pressure Drop’. As a live act he is funnier than any stand-up comedian and no singer since Joe Strummer in ‘The Clash’ sings with more urgency about things that really matter.

7 SEED MATTER and ‘other’ stories by Christine Mackey opens at Butler Gallery this coming Friday and runs until December 18.The exhibition merges historical documentation, ‘hearsay’ and contemporary agricultural practices by tracing the historical lineage of the Daniel O’Rourke pea, an Irish cultivar sourced from the Irish Seed Savers Association in Clare. The pea, which supposedly originated in Cork in the 1800s, found its way

to America, Russia and Germany. In Russia, seed samples of the pea have been held since 1921 at the Vavilov All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Plant Industry in St Petersburg. This institute is the world’s first seed bank and has one of the world’s largest collections of plant genetic material. The pea fell into the hands of many plant breeders, one of whom was Joseph Sangster, who possibly bred the pea as ‘Sangster No. 1.’ in Lissadell Gardens, Sligo.

FILM Crazy, Stupid, LoverDirector Glenn Ficarra, John Requa

Ryan Gosling’s star continues to rise with this ,his most mainstream offering since ‘The

Notebook’ stealing every scene he has with the lacklustre Steve Carrell. The cleverly structured plot is as such- average man Steve leaves his wife after she confesses to infidelity. He ends up haunting a singles bar where Gosling is the resident ladies man. He feels sorry for Carrell and takes him under his wing- polishing him up and letting him in on his secrets of seduction. Meanwhile Gosling falls in love with Emma Stone and we realize they are both swapping places in their romantic lives. The main problem with this film is that it doesn’t deliver enough gags and there is some very lazy direction. It feels like too many meetings sucked a lot of the life out of this fine script and it seems compromised. Movies like this are screen-tested to within an inch of their lives nowadays and Hollywood tries to please too many demographics. The editing is particularly awkward and after the fifth montage sequence the film grows very jaded.Another thing that is going against

it is Steve Carrell. His umpteenth version of the Everyman is getting really dull and you wonder about the thin line between playing boring and actually being boring throughout. This however leaves Ryan Gosling with lots of room to shine. His character arc is juicier than Carrell’s and he is likable even when being sleazy. He also revels in the opportunity to show off his comedy chops well honed from all those years with Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake on the Mickey Mouse Club. The female characters are also surprisingly well drawn for this kind of film. The presence of Julian Moore lends any film a touch of class and here she manages to make her character sympathetic and three dimensional. Another career making turn is from the delightful Emma Stone who once again shows that she is the young actress to beat with a breezy turn in comic delivery. The best line in the movie when she sees Gosling’s six-pack is timed to perfection “Seriously, It’s like you are Photo-shopped.”This souffle is superficially entertaining and will divert you for an hour or so. However some of the cringe-inducing moments with the younger cast as well as some of the farcical elements towards the end do subtract. If you can ignore these and appreciate the well hidden twists in the screenplay you will enjoy this piece of fluff.
