KILKENNY Recreation and Sports Partnership (KRSP) is hosting three walks to help you get active and explore some of the Kilkenny trails in the New Year.

On Saturday, January 19, an Operation Transformation walks will be held at Castlecomer Discovery Park at 11am, The Parade in Kilkenny City also at 11am and in Woodstock Gardens, Inistioge at 2pm. There will be a walk leader at each venue to guide the walk so no prior experience is necessary.

The walk in Kilkenny City will be led by Mayor Seán Ó HArgáin, as one of the Mayor’s weekly walks, and will follow a route around the city. The walks in Castlecomer and Woodstock will follow woodland trails and may be muddy underfoot. Comfortable shoes and raingear are advised for these walks.

For anyone who’s using Operation Transformation as a kickstart to increasing activity levels for the New Year, why not set a goal to help you keep your resolution. There are lots of events planned in Kilkenny in the coming weeks that you could work towards.

Kilkenny City Harriers organise a 5k dash for local charities every St Patricks Weekend, a very achievable goal for beginners. Tyndall Mountain Club and Kilkenny Walking Club have regular guided hillwalks varying from easy to more challenging walks.  Nore Valley Athletics Club is planning a 10k in April with a local training programme for anyone who would like to participate in their first 10k.

IN ‘HhhH’ by Laurent Binet two men have been enlisted to kill the head of the Gestapo. This is Operation Anthropoid, Prague, 1942: two Czechoslovakian parachutists sent on a daring mission by London to assassinate Reinhard Heydrich - chief of the Nazi secret services. His boss is Heinrich Himmler but

everyone in the SS says ‘Himmler’s brain is called Heydrich’, which in German spells ‘HHhH’.

All the characters are real. All the events depicted are true. ‘HHhH’ is a panorama of the Third Reich told through the life of one outstandingly brutal man, a story of unbearable heroism and loyalty, revenge and betrayal.

VULTURES, the local detective webcom, have released their very last episode. Their two part finale is a funny and action packed end to the series that started off with a Christmas episode in December 2007.

The fourth episode of the new series  ‘Dan McGrain In The Nick Of Time’  was released online in December. It was followed by the fifth and concluding episode  ‘The Dicks Who Came In From The Cold.Created by local production company ‘Mycrofilms’,  Vultures  has become a hugely popular web series, which has been regularly at the top of the iTunes comedy video podcast charts since its inception. This year the show became part of BeActive Media’s inaugural Digital Comedy Lab giving Vultures its first international exposure.

The last episode of the new series will be the final bow for Vultures as a webcom.

The new series has been created by  John Morton, Alan Slattery and Peter McGann and features a returning cast of characters played by familiar faces from Kilkenny’s theatre and film scene including David Thompson, Suzanne O’Brien, Seán Hackett, Ross Costigan, Amy Dunne, Ken McGuire, Gus McDonagh, Alexandra Christle  and  Stephen Colfer. Since the first of the twelve episodes was released in 2007,  Vultures  has been shot entirely in Kilkenny with a local crew.

The first series of  Vultures  depicted a small time company struggling to stay in business and the second series, which began in March of this year, has been

looking at how they dealt with unemployment.  ‘Dan McGrain In The Nick Of Time’  sees the former detectives being drawn back into action under pressure from their former student Janine Drew. In  ‘The Dicks Who Came In From The Cold’, mysterious local ‘security chief’ Johnny Curragh decides to silence our heroes before they become a problem. The former sleuths must make the decision: are they still detectives or are they really retired?

Vultures  remains free of charge online and you can subscribe to the show on iTunes. It’s also available for subscription atYouTube.com/VulturesPI. All information on the series and all episodes can be found at www.VulturesPI.com

THE Certain Three tour  returns for its fourth annual outing with three home – grown Irish acts: electro-pop duo ‘Nanu Nanu’, lo-fi shoegazer ‘Si Schroeder’  and the post-punk of  ‘Trumpets of Jericho’.

Continuing on in the tradition of the last three years – where Irish-based booking agency ‘Word of Mouth’  curates a triple bill of three very different acts and sends them out on tour – the 2013 tour features a diverse and compelling line-up, with an alternating running order for each show. Previous tours have featured Katie Kim, O Emperor, We Cut Corners, The Lost Brothers and Alessi’s Ark, amongst others.

‘Nanu Nanu’  are an alien-pop duo based in Dublin. Members Mirrorman and Glitterface use analog and modular synthesizers teamed with a strong foundation of heavy beats and lush, otherworldly vocal processing to create their exciting and unique sound.

‘Si Schroeder  is a Dublin-based musician who mixes his voice with guitars, samples, acoustic instruments, beats and live drums to create haunting and uplifting melodic songs exploring the darker side of the human condition. A layered approach to composition and production results in dense, textured blends of synthetic and organic sounds, over which Si’s warm, soothing voice unravels stories of chaos and destruction. His debut album, the critically acclaimed Choice Music Prize nominated  ‘Coping Mechanisms’  (2006), was the Irish Times’ record of the week, Foggy Notions’ album of the year, and is in the Hot Press list of top Irish albums of all time.

Kilkenny people will be familiar with ‘Trumpets of Jericho’, a folk-tinged post-punk band based in Cork. They played Kilkenny Arts Festival in 2012 and one of the band members is a native of

Kilkenny City. After two years of creating some semblance of a sound that they can call ‘their own’, the group finally decided to record their debut  Songs ‘Like an Alum Ut Its Nor Really’, garnering praise and indifference in equal measure. Their energetic live shows have built them a strong and loyal following in the south of Ireland (ie Cork) and they recently opened for The Fall, which is pretty cool.

The Certain Three tour hits the Set Theatre on Saturday, February 2. The event will be free but people need to apply for tickets via Set Theatre’s website www.set.ie. There will be a limited number of tickets available and organisers are asking people to apply early to avoid disappointment.

A LANCASTER born song writer is causing quite a stir in the peaceful surrounds of Thomastown. Singer Liz Aspden moved her band, known collectively as ‘Tit Modern’, along with a shed-load of recording equipment into a house on Market Street in the town.

The house in question is the home of local artist Sid Evans and doubles as his studio. Sid’s figurative character studies are

well known in the region and his 2006 book ‘seconds’ was adapted for radio and won a PPI national radio award.

Liz and ‘Tit Modern’ are recording their debut album entitled ‘Dirty Work’ with the help of Dublin based Producer Rory Grubb who is handling the recording duties. Band members describe their sound as “quirky folk”. It features members of Thomastown luminaries ‘Nathan Conway

and The River Valley Band’.‘Tit Modern’ will film their

first music video in the coming weeks in The Bridge Brook Arms in Thomastown. The video for the song ‘Lady’ will show an audience reacting to the raunchy source material of the song.

For more information check out www.facebook.com/tit.modern or follow Tit Modern on Twitter @titmodern.

Kilkenny & District Umbro League Saturday 12/01/2013

THIS Sunday morning at 11 o’clock on the Kells Road, Evergreen A and Evergreen B clash in the most eagerly awaited fixture in the Premier Division this season. This is not like any other fixture, as brother vs brother, cousin vs cousin and former team mates will do battle for the first time this season.

There will be four sets of brothers involved in the match with the Cashin’s, Johnson’s, Whearty’s and The Owens’s all set to do battle. There will be cousins on both sides involved and there will be players on both teams play-ing against the team that they finished last season with. Even the manager of the Ever-green A team is the former manager of the B team that was successful in winning promotion

from Division One.In recent times the A team have had the up-

per hand in this fixture and despite one or two scares have really brushed aside their B team counterparts without much fuss. However, this time things are different. The B team have fi-nally got a squad that is capable of challeng-ing the big two, they are on a good run in the league and have made it to the semi final of the Shield for the first time.

This will not be a game for the faint hearted, as well as a vital three points there will be fam-ily pride and bragging rights at stake. It prom-ises to be an explosive game right from the start so make sure and get there early to avoid disappointment.
