Original Sins

NEW IRISH WRITING

NEW

IRISH

WR

ITIN

Edited by Suzanne Powerand John MacKenna

The new Irish writers featured in thisanthology of fictional stories are guilty ofthe sin of originality. They share their manyversions of saints, scholars and demonswho speak from around the world andbeyond it, from Ireland, from abroad, fromplaces of the mind or from the past. Theircharacters discover old lives and invent newones, fall in love and out of it, engage withlife, death and all its promises, make newfriends and enemies and are daring, caring, frightened and funny. Travel through theimaginations of twenty two new voices whohave created many more. Step into thestories and poems, believe their intentionsto entice the reader away from the routineof the day into the realm of storytelling. The writing in Original Sins works for whatit omits as much as for what is written. Theauthors have sharpened their blades forfour years, working together and alone andwith themselves. They truly learned thatless is more on paper. They know the valueof silence in a story. They use the shadowswords cast to great effect. They are writerswhose work you will read again. Remembertheir names.

You will remember their stories and readmore of them in years to come.

DIVA Fashion on the corner of High Street and James’s Street in the city is a sassy ladies fashion store off ering all a woman needs to step out in style!

Open just over a year, the boutique is well stocked with all you could need for a glamorous night out or for a casual day spent shopping or having lunch with friends.

The shop is very well laid out so customers have no problems seeing what is on

off er or what new items have come in since their last visit.

They have a great selection of jeans and the staff are very helpful when it comes to choosing the right shape and fi t for your fi gure so don’t be afraid to ask.

New stock is constantly arriving so make sure you regularly pop in and see what amazing styles are coming in for the summer. You won’t be disappointed!

IF you fancy a night out in one of Kilkenny’s friendliest bars

then look further than Ryan’s Bar on Friary Street - the

city’s worst kept secret. Always fi lled with an eclectic bunch of people you never know who you will meet there. Tourists

mingle with locals against the backdrop of

this stylishly laid out bar. An excellent music venue

- all kinds of tunes can be heard including trad, rock, heavy metal and indie. Presided over by Arthur Drohan, who is always ready with a smile and a quip for new comer and regular alike, this bar is an essential stop on a bar crawl and once you drop by you might never leave.

There’s also a spacious beer garden at the back which is next to the covered smoking area where everybody in the know in Kilkenny comes to on a summer evening.

OUT of the blue, your husband of thirty years asks you for a pause in your marriage to indulge his infatuation with a young Frenchwoman. Do you: a) assume it’s a passing aff air and play along, b) angrily declare the marriage over, c) crack up or d) retreat to a safe haven and regroup?

In ‘The Summer Without Men’ by Siri Hustvedt, Mia Fredricksen cracks up fi rst, then decamps for the summer to the prairie town of her childhood, where she rages, fumes, and bemoans her sorry fate as abandoned spouse. But little by little, she is drawn into the lives of those around her.

THE Rafter Dempsey’s Bar, Friary Street in association with Evergreen FC presents ‘An Evening with Ireland and Liverpool Legend John Aldridge’ on Wednesday, April 13.

However by not rinsing you might also waste water if they emerge unclean! The Dish Squeegee is a silicon wedge, designed to scrap off   dish washer bound plates and pans without pre-rinsing and thus conserving water and reducing your energy bill by preventing you wasting hot water.

The Dish Squeegee is designed for use on pots, pans, plates and cups of all shapes and sizes.
