Open Enrollment Deadline Is Monday, February 29, 2016
If you have students that will be attending school in Killdeer and you are not a resident of the Killdeer District, you need to complete an Open Enrollment Application for the 2016 – 2017 school term. We have a significant number of students that are open enrolled into Kill-deer and a few that are open enrolled to other Districts from Killdeer. The open enrollment deadline is Monday, February 29, 2016 which is “the last working day prior to March First” according to statute. The application is filed with the “Admitting District” instead of the “Resident District”. I still encounter difficulty trying to en-sure that families file the necessary paperwork according to the NDCC timeline. Families that reside in McKenzie County, Billings County, Halliday School District, Beulah School District, Manda-ree School District, and Twin Buttes students of elemen-tary-age (Twin-Buttes High School students are covered on “Tuition Agreements”) should file open-enrollment ap-plications no later than Monday, February 29, 2016. Please download the form at http://www.dpi.state.nd.us/forms/word/sfn19378.doc or request the form from the school office. I would be happy to assist you with any questions you have
regarding open enrollment.

BEST Robotics
Since September 12th, 21 students have been working diligently to compete in the BEST robotics competition.
First at the local competition in Dickinson on October 23rd and 24th and then at the regional competition on December
4th and 5th. BEST robotics (Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology) involves two parallel competitions, the
robotics competition and the BEST Award. For the robotics competition each school is given the same kit of parts and
are given six weeks to build a robot that can perform a task better than other robots. Each year the robots have to per-
form a new task based on the game theme which changes every year. In this year’s game scenario, Pay Dirt, BEST
purchased a mine that has many resources but is not safe for humans to enter. They require that teams build a robot
that can repair the mine and retrieve the commodities within.
The BEST Award is the highest honor in the competition and involves five separate areas of competition: Pro-
ject Engineering Notebook, Marketing Presentation, Team Exhibit and Interview, Spirit and Sportsmanship, and Robot
Performance. The Project Engineering Notebooks is scored based on how well students document the process the team
used to design, build, and test their robot. In the Marketing Presentation the students imagine themselves as employees
trying to sell their product, the robot, to a potential buyer, the judges. The students have to provide information about
their company and engineering methods, and why their product is superior. In the Team Exhibit and Interview the stu-
dents build an 8’ x 8’ x 8’ exhibit which embodies the game theme and demonstrates all of their publicity efforts in the
school and surrounding community. Judges then interview the students and ask them questions about the team’s ex-
hibit and about the robot’s design and construction. The Spirit and Sportsmanship is scored based on the spirit the
team shows during the competition and how much they help other teams and their conduct toward other teams.
On December 4th and 5th, 21 students in grades 6-12 under the guidance of Dr. West participated in the North-
ern Plains BEST robotics regional championship. Killdeer was one of 34 teams from North Dakota, South Dakota,
Minnesota, Indiana, Ohio, and Pennsylvania participating in the regional competition. To participate in the regional
competition, the teams had to be among the top teams at their local competition to earn an invitation to the regional
competition. At the competition Killdeer finished 4th in Spirit and Sportsmanship, 5th in the Project Engineering Note-
book, 5th in the Team Exhibit and Interview, 17th in the Marketing Presentation, and 29th in the Robot Performance, for
an overall placing of 13th in the BEST Award. This is exceptional work for a team which is only in its third year of
existence. I congratulate all of the students for their hard work this year and look forward to next year.

We would like to invite all families of Killdeer High School seniors to Killdeer High School, on Wednesday, January 20th for a financial aid night. We will cover topics including applying for financial aid, the FAFSA, how financial aid decisions get made, and what types of aid and resources are available for families. Financial aid can be a challenging process for college ready families. This is a chance for families to hear from financial aid experts and ask questions to those directly involved in the financial aid process. Our speaker, Sandy Klein, is the Director of Financial Aid at Dickinson State University. Questions please contact Mrs. Vettel, School Counselor or Mrs. Roshau, Career Advisor at 764-5877.
Please RSVP by January 10th, 2016 to Mrs. Vettel at [email protected] or by calling 764-5877 or by having your student
sign up outside the Counseling Office.
**ALL Seniors that attend with a parent will receive an extended
lunch period for a week!**
