Dear Members,

Since our last edition, our U-14 team qualified for both championship and league finals. Unfortunately despite pushing their opponents all the way in both matches they could not overcome their West Tyrone opponents Urney. I wish to congratulate the players and management for their outstanding achievements this year.

Meanwhile the Golden Jubilee celebrations have featured prominently over the last two months. The club’s joint competition with Laghey school was an outstanding success. We then had the historic visit to the club by Liam O’Neill, An tUachtarán CLG. The President hopes to renew his acquaintances with us when he attends the Gala dinner next April. Recently we had our first ever Golf Classic. It was a huge social and financial success.

Looking ahead, I hope our planned summer camp in August will be memorable and rewarding occasion for our youth players. We are also eagerly awaiting the cycle spin ceili events arranged for September.

Yours sincerely, Terry McShane

Laghey P.S competition

The club’s Golden Jubilee celebrations are now in full swing and over the past few months we have organised a number of events as part of our celebration. The start of these events, was a competition run in conjunction with Laghey Primary School to create a poem or poster on “What Killyman means to you”. There were some excellent entries and pictured below are the winners in each primary class:

All the children in the school were given bags with some treats, while the winners were given an additional prize. As well as this, the winning entries had the honour of having their poem/poster placed into the time capsule, buried by the GAA President on the 10th June. Our thanks to Siobhan and the rest of the staff at Laghey for their great hospitality. Our thanks to our club representatives and also to Eamon O’Hagan (Snr) who helped take photos of the occasion.

GAA President’s Visit

On the 10th June the GAA President Liam O’Neill visited the clubrooms. A large crowd turned out to welcome him and a guard of honour was formed by youth players, as he made his way to his first task of planting a tree. He then was asked to bury a time capsule with the following items enclosed:- 2013 Club Committee photograph, the team sheets for Killyman v Castlederg reserves and senior league match played 9th June, winners of the Laghey PS “What Killyman means to me” competition, recent grocery receipts, local, NI and world news highlights and a parish and mass leaflet from the 9th June. This capsule will not be opened until 2064. The president then posed for photographs and was presented with gifts of local crafts and produce; Jimmy O’Neill - blackthorn walking stick, Dermot McGahan - potatoes and Hughes Mushrooms - mushrooms . This was an historic event and our thanks to all who turned out and give the president a very warm welcome. We will see him again at our Gala Dinner on the 24h April 2014.

Under 14 Championship Final Grade 4 - Killyman V Urney 27th June at Garvaghy

Killyman got off to a blistering start having the ball in the Urney net twice within the first five minutes with goals from Daragh Morgan and Daryl Comac. However Killyman were not able to continue this pace, as Urney gradually took control scoring two quick goals and further points resulting in a four point lead at half time. Killyman had a number of clear goal chances during the first half but failed to take them. Half Time Score Killyman 2.0 Urney 2.4

Killyman needed a good start to the second half but unfortunately Urney scored the first two scores before a single reply by Cathal McGahan. Urney continued to dominate and extended their lead to eight points with about 10 minutes left. Killyman took control in the last 10 minutes but two further scores by Daragh Morgan was all that they could muster against a very stubborn Urney defence. Urney scored a further point and ran out winners on a score of Killyman 2.3 Urney 2.10

Under 14 League

The Under 14’s had an impressive league campaign reaching the league final, and the league final is planned for 4th July.

Go Games

The Go Games are now underway with Under 10 and Under 8 competitions taking place on alternative weeks. These are great opportunities to improve the skills of our young players and every attempt is being made to ensure that we participate in as many of these as possible over the year. Our thanks to those who have helped with transportation over the last few weeks.

The long awaited Golf Classic took place on the 28th June in the Dungannon Golf Club. This was a great days golfing for the 49 teams who took part and despite some inclement weather in the morning the evening brightened up and some great golf took place. The excitement of the day was added to, with the appearance of Ronnie Whelan the former Republic of Ireland and Liverpool soccer player and RTE soccer pundit who played a four ball along with his wife. We

would like to thank all the players for coming out to support the event, all the sponsors and Dungannon Golf Club for their assistance throughout the day. We would also like to thank Karen in the restaurant who provided an excellent meal for all the players. The

following were the results of the days play:- Junior Winner - Jude Kane; Ladies - Nearest the Pin – Imelda Redpath, Longest Drive Kathleen Hamill, Four Ball Winners Maeve McVeigh’s team, Runners Up Second Choice team.

Mens Longest Drive Mickey Early, Nearest the Pin Mark Skeffington, Four ball winners Gerry Loughrans team (105), Runners Up Sammy Wilson Team (104), Third Justy Hughes Team (102), Fourth David Parkes team.
