FROM THE PRESIDENT 2013
Dear Community Members,
2012 was a great year for the King City Chamber of Commerce & Agriculture and I am proud of what we have accomplished in 2012 as Chamber President. We are in challenging economic times for businesses nationwide and locally. With challenges come opportunities for business to join together to create strong partnerships and grow more prosperous and pro table. I believe collaboration is what makes the Chamber signi cant, which in return adds value to your business. We are here to support, educate, and build up our local businesses so they are better
equipped to face the challenges and opportunities of our changing economy. I thank all the businesses, organizations and associations that are listed in this Directory for the ongoing support of the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture. I encourage you to keep this Directory within arm’s reach and use it frequently to support each other. It is an honor and privilege to be re-elected as Chamber President for 2013 and I look forward to seeing you at one of our Chamber events.

FROM THE PRESIDENT ELECT
Dear King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture Members:
Before coming to King City three years ago, I
had a long and rewarding career with the Boeing
Company in Everett, Washington. After retiring
from Boeing I lived in Anchorage Alaska for six
years. In Washington and Alaska I was active
with the local hospital foundation boards and
served as president of the Valley General Hospital
Foundation Board for several years. I have been
able to draw on the skills and lessons learned from
these strong organizations as I have become active
in this wonderful community.
In the three years my wife and I have lived in King
City we have seen a lot of growth and progress.
The local schools and hospital are stronger. The
crime rate has decreased. The “new” farmers’
market just completed its third successful season
and plans are in the works for next year. Several
new businesses have opened their doors and are
thriving. We are thrilled to be part of this vibrant
community with the bountiful produce and even
more bountiful people who are actively involved
in making this a better place to live and to own
a business. I’m looking forward to this year as
President Elect of the Chamber and I’m excited
to continue the quality programs sponsored by the
Chamber in the past to build on new ideas for the
future.

2013 KING CITY CHAMBER DIRECTORY 7
Hi,
Welcome to the City of King. Whether you’re a resident or visitor I hope that you’re able to enjoy all that we have to
offer. We’re spoiled with great weather year-round, clean air, and plenty of recreational and social activities. Personally I
think we have the best of all worlds. There are great things to do in town. Plus, a short drive brings you to Monterey, Paso
Robles or San Luis Obispo. As much as I enjoy visiting those areas, I’m equally as happy to see them in my rear-view
mirror as I head back to my home of King City. A partial list of what this small city has to offer:
• 9-hole public golf course
• Beautiful county park complete with camping/RV hook-ups and the Monterey County Ag & Rural Life Museum
• An airport, home to the Tutima Academy of Aviation Safety
• Parks & Recreation Center with pool and racquetball court
• Tennis Courts
• Numerous sports fi elds
• Movie theater
• Farmers Market
• Highly active service & social clubs
• Fairgrounds with facilities that feature numerous year-round activities, anchored by the annual Salinas Valley Fair
• Mee Memorial Hospital
• Sol Treasures Art & Cultural Events Center
• Fourth of July annual celebration
• Performing arts events at historic Robert Stanton Theater
• Much, much more.
Once in a while I overhear someone saying there’s nothing to do in King City. They simply must not be looking. In
addition to the above, just outside of town we enjoy leisure activities at Pinnacles National Monument, Lake Nacimiento,
Lake San Antonio, San Antonio Mission, Soledad Mission, and Fort Hunter Liggett Military Reserve. I could go on, but
you get the point.
I am enthusiastic to serve as the mayor of King City since 2010. As with any city we have our issues. But we have a
wonderful core of people and I continue to be optimistic about the future. I encourage you to get involved and enjoy all
that the city has to offer. And if you’re ever looking for an idea of something to do, just give me a call....
Thanks.

Honors Business of the YearMission Ranches and Big Valley Labor
BY BROCK HILLOn Nov. 20, Mission
Ranches/Big Valley Labor were named Business of the Year by the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture.
The two companies share the same owners and share operations.
The Business of the Year award is given to a business based out of the King City area that gives back to the community, and that has been in the area for more than three years.
Mission Ranches opened in 1988 and Big Valley opened in 1998. Alex Romans explained the relationship between the two companies.
“Mission Ranches does the growing of the crops and Big Valley Labor supplies the labor,” he said, adding that together, they form a grower/shipper relationship.
John Romans described what made the company so successful: “Hard work and good business partners.”
“Good employees! We treat our employees really well, and it makes for a happy working environment,” added Alex Romans.
John Romans, John Ramirez and Alex Romans went on to explain how vertical integration helped their business as well. Vertical integration is a style of management control where a supply chain is united under one owner. By growing their own product, providing their own labor force and selling
their own product, the company remains highly efficient.
When asked how the King City Chamber went about surprising them with the Business of the Year award, Ramirez joked, “By lying!”
Mikel Ann Miller had told Alex Romans and Ramirez that she needed to talk about the Heritage Foundation. Members of the King City Chamber arrived early and waited inside of Big Valley Labor/Mission Ranches. When Romans and Ramirez arrived, they revealed balloons and flowers, and informed them that they had been picked for Business of the Year.
“It was surprising,” Ramirez said.
As to what the Business of the Year award means to them, John Romans said, “It’s an honor. We appreciate them appreciating us.”
“It’s good to be recognized,” Ramirez said.
Alex Romans explained what motivates them to give back to the community.
“There’s a need for it,” he said. “We live here and we work here. We see things every day. We recognize the need to support these programs. We all grew up around here.”
Mission Ranches/Big Valley Labor both support the community in a variety of ways. Many of their employees volunteer time to help with community projects throughout
King City. Mission Ranches/Big Valley Labor supports local fundraisers, the Heritage Foundation, the Salinas Valley Fairgrounds, Little League, Hartnell College, Mission San Antonio, the King City Library, Sober Grad, and King City High School. Mission Ranches/Big Valley Labor give out scholarships every year to King City High School students. They were also a major contributor in both money and labor to the King City High School track.
John Romans, John Ramirez, and Alex Romans explained how they are all individually involved in the community and how that, in turn, helps Mission Ranches/Big Valley Labor be so involved in the community.

Honors Citizen of the YearFloyd Owens
BY BROCK HILLThe King City Chamber
of Commerce and Agriculture surprised Floyd Owens on Nov. 20 with the announcement that he had won the Citizen of the Year Award. The title is awarded to a citizen who has contributed to the community in a variety of ways and has lived in the area for more than three years.
“I was shocked! They kind of tricked me,” Owens said.
The King City Chamber had called Matthew Owens at the Chevron on Broadway Circle, Floyd Owens’ business, and said they were looking for a judge for the King City Christmas Parade and told Matthew that they would come by Chevron to discuss it further with Floyd. Floyd Owens described how he saw several cars pull up at the same time and how people from the King City Chamber got out of them.
“There were eight or nine of them, and they had flowers and balloons. I had already made my mind up that I wasn’t going to be a judge. They walked in and I thought, ‘How am I going to refuse this?”
The Chamber explained the real reason they were there and presented Owens with the Citizen of the Year award, catching him completely off guard.
“They really surprised me,” Owens said. “It’s really
great! It’s an honor.”Owens was part of the King
City Fire Department for 35 years and was the Fire Chief (an elected office) for 25 years. He also helped found the South County Fire Chiefs Association, where all of the local chiefs came together to share ideas and help the community. Owens is still actively involved with the KCFD’s barbecue fundraiser each year.
Owens wanted to remind the community to be thankful for the King City Volunteer Fire Department.
“They save the city a lot of money,” he said. “They’re really dedicated, and they work 24/7. They don’t get time off.”
Owens talked about how the firemen risk their lives and get called away from their families and their jobs.
Owens has been involved in various organizations and events in King City over the years, including the Planning Commission, the King City Chamber of Commerce, the King City Rotary Club, Century Club, Young Famers, and sponsoring the local little league. Owens also held various offices with the King City Golf Club, including Tournament Chairman, President, and Vice President. He is still a member of the Board of Directors.
Floyd Owens was in Boy Scouts, where he made Eagle Scout. He credits the Boy Scouts with making him involved in the community.
“I always wanted to help out,” he said. “Service to the community was always something I wanted to do.”
Owens originally began
his career with Chevron working as an employee at Standard Oil of California in King City. He later became the station manager of the former Chevron by Denny’s Restaurant. Later, Owens moved again to the Chevron on Broadway Circle in 1969. This time, Chevron offered Owens the opportunity to purchase the station as a dealer in 1973, and he has been there ever since.
Owens was born and raised in Brookings, S.D. His family moved to El Centro when he was 7 years old, where he later went to high school. Owens came to King City to haul for a summer at Maggio’s Carrots. While working at Maggio’s, Owens met the love of his life, Lyn Owens, and decided to marry her and stay in King City.

Kathy MerrittBY BROCK HILL
KING CITY — Kathy Merritt received the Friend of the Community award from the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture in a surprise announcement on Nov. 21. The award is given to a member of the community who has contributed a lot of local support and assistance.
“I was totally surprised! I did not see it coming,” Merritt said.
Sharon Pursley arranged to have Merritt in town by inviting her to have coffee at Denny’s. When Merritt arrived at Denny’s, Pursley and Mikel Ann Miller began asking her about the Christmas Parade.
“I didn’t notice anybody walk by the windows. So they must have skirted the outside of the building,” Kathy said.
Members of the King City Chamber hid in the Denny’s lobby until Miller gave them the signal to surprise Merritt. Merritt was presented balloons and flowers during the surprise announcement that she was the recipient of the Friend of the Community award.
When asked about what the award meant to her, Merritt said, “It is satisfying being acknowledged, but it’s not my primary reason for doing things for the community.”
Merritt is involved in the Lighted Christmas Parade in King City, which was held on Nov. 30. Merritt assisted with the parade parking lot prior to the parade, making sure that
Brock Hill/South County NewspapersFriend of the Community Kathy Merritt, center, with members of the Chamber
cars and trucks were lit up. Merritt is an active member
in the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The Ladies Auxiliary provides support to active troops, veterans, and their families.
“We do a lot of things for the troops and for the serving military out of Fort Hunter Liggett,” Merritt said. “We prepare boxes for them, we bake pies for them, we bake cookies for them; we do all kinds of good stuff.”
The Ladies Auxiliary also provides items to the Veterans Transition Center at Fort Ord for homeless veterans and their families. Additionally, the Ladies Auxiliary mails care packages to the active troops in Afghanistan, and helps

Farmers’ MarketCHAMBER FARMERS’ MARKET
Daisy Chavez/South County NewspapersChildren from the Youth Orchestra Salinas, YoSal, from South County play their
recorders on the last day of the Farmer’s Market this year.
BY DAISY CHAVEZKING CITY — The
last day of the King City Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture’s Farmers Market finished up a strong run, with the Youth Orchestra Salinas students closing out the day with music and a new vendor committed for next year’s market.
The market kicked off with members of the Youth Orchestra Salinas (YoSal) playing a tune on recorders, followed by the older strings students playing with conductor Steve Ettinger.
“Up until the very last day we got a new vendor,” said Cindi Mora, Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture manager. “This vendor hopes to come next year.”
The new vendor has a license to sell nursery stock, plants and trees, and they are an addition to the market’s vendor who sells fresh flowers.
In comparison with last year’s market, this one has a few stark contrasts, including the location between First and Second Street on Broadway, in front of Moon’s Meats and Deli.
“I think we have finally found a home for our farmers market,” said Mora of the move.
The market moved various locations to ensure its success. Originally a block down, the market obstructed a few businesses and for a while, it was off Broadway entirely.
“The new location seemed to make our merchants happy,” Mora said. “The
buildings blocked the wind, and it was still on the street. When it was off the street, it was out of sight, out of mind, and now its on Broadway like the community wanted.”
Another pro to having the market at that location, Mora said, is that it didn’t block as many business fronts.
An added benefit for the market vendors was the partnership between the Mee Memorial Hospital and the Chamber of Commerce. The vendors could sell their produce through the chamber to the hospital at an affordable price and on their way to the weekly market.
“Our farmer’s market
vendors were able to provide produce to the hospital even on slow days,” Mora said. “They would make their deliveries before the market, and this keeps the vendors happy and coming back. They will continue to have the relationship to sell year-round.”
The produce is an added benefit to the hospital because they get local products for less because it reduces the costs in storage, travel and in return get fresh food.
“Most of our produce vendors are local,” said Mora. “[The produce vendors] are all chamber members, and as long as they are able to
produce, they can deliver to the hospital.”
When asked what was ahead for the market, Mora said she is always looking for new vendors and to improve the market.
“We’re open to doing something different,” Mora said. “Were open to suggestions on how we can better improve the market. Just let me know”
Vince and Tina from South Valley Auto Plaza let the market borrow the sound system every week for music, and AG Pluming supplied the portable lavatories.
