BoardAs the 2015 Chair of the Board of Directors, I am honored to serve the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce along with outstanding Board Members, a dedicated staff and many other volunteers.

The Chamber movement, both locally and regionally, is a powerful force for positivity ~ and here at the Lakewood Chamber, we pride ourselves on being “in business for business.”

This year, we have decided to take this mantra one step further, adopting a proactive stand and committed to changing the collective mindset across our broad Membership base.

Welcome!

Welcome to Lakewood, Washington! Our city has 60,000 residents and is host to Joint Base Lewis McChord. Lakewood is a city rich in culture, tradition and history. It’s a great place to raise a family, start a business or play at any of our parks and lakes.

We’re located in Pierce County and offer some of the most stunning

backdrops in the Pacific northwest. A short automobile, bus

or train ride away from Tacoma and Seattle, we’re easily

accessible off I-5. Perhaps more than any community in


Lakewood, Washington. You’re more than

Washington, we are deeply connected to our neighboring Military base, Joint Base Lewis McChord,

the largest joint base on the west coast.

We’re home to a great K-12 school system, and a popular technical college and community

college. We offer an array of shopping and dining for visitors and residents, alike ~

everything from popular national brands to iconic small restaurants and stores.

Check out our historic museums, gardens and live theater! Like to golf? We

offer several outstanding courses. Local casinos not only have card games

of chance, but offer great food and live entertainment on weekends. And

when it comes to recreation, you need look no further than our

parks and lakes. That’s right. Lakewood boasts some of the best

recreation in the region.


Hunters began to set up farming on The

Prairie. One of these farms, at the present

site of Western State Hospital, was leased

by the US Army in 1849 to serve as a

military post following an Indian attack on

Fort Nisqually. The new fort, called Fort

Steilacoom, was used to quell Indian uprisings.

About that time the first grist mill (1850), saw

mill (1852) and flour mill (1855) were set

up in the area now known as the Chambers

Creek Estuary. Immigrants began to arrive in

covered wagons over Naches Pass in 1853

after Washington became a Territory.

History of LakewoodLakewood was called the Prairie in the beginning—an expanse of land about 20 miles square, dotted with lakes and occasional stands of oak and Douglas fir trees. Steilacoom and nisqually Indians held pow-wows on The Prairie—before the advent of the White hunters, trappers and settlers.

This abundant nisqually Prairie was chosen by the British as the site of one of its fur trading operations by the hudson Bay Company in 1833.

The Tacoma Country and Golf Club was established in 1894 to further attract the rich and famous. The first golf club west of the Mississippi, it featured trolley transportation from Tacoma to the playground on The Prairie.

As the new population increased,

so did hostilities with the native

tribes. Indian uprisings continued

over land they considered theirs,

but was being rented by the U.S.

government to the Hudson Bay

Company at $50 a month.

The era known as The Indian Wars

brought to Fort Steilacoom many

army lieutenants and captains who

would make names for themselves

during the Civil War - General

George B. McClellan, Confederate

General George E. Pickett, Union

General Philip H. Sheridan and

Union General U.S. Grant who later

became President.

During the late 1800’s, while

England and the United States

bickered over the 49th Parallel, the

Prairie began to vanish. The prolific

Douglas Fir, no longer burned by the

Indians, grew out of control. The

land wrested by the British from the

Indians, then by the U.S. from the

British, became part of the 42nd

State of the Union in 1889.

Many stately homes were built on

estates along the shorelines of area

lakes, the most impressive being

Thornewood, built on American

Lake between 1909 and 1911. The

Thorne Mansion, renovated into a

spectacular bed and breakfast, was

once considered one of the most

beautiful estates and gardens in

the nation, and attracted illustrious

people. Another spectacular home

and garden of that era is the lovely

Lakewold Gardens and Wagoner

Home on Gravelly Lake Drive.

In the early 1900’s, the famed

Tacoma Speedway was built

around what is now the Lakewood

Industrial Park. The mile-long

wooden track circled the open

prairie and drew racing greats, such

as Barney Oldfield, Louis Chevrolet

and Eddie Rickenbacker.

During World War I, Camp Lewis

was built on land donated to the

government by Pierce County

citizens. McChord Air Force Base,

then known as McChord Field, was

developed from the old County Air

Field in 1938.

As the Great Depression lifted,

business development took off. In

1937, Norton Clapp built the first

part of the Lakewood Colonial

Center, one of the first suburban

shopping centers in the country. A

fire district was formed in 1942 and

a water district in 1943. Between

1939 and 1949, population of the

Lakes District jumped from 3,000 to

17,000.

A decade later, in 1958, the Villa

Plaza Shopping Center was built,

and in 1960, the Thunderbird

Center was built on the site of

another small airstrip. Villa Plaza has

since become the Lakewood Towne

Center ; Thunderbird is now the

Oakbrook Shopping Center full of

retail and services for residents and

visitors to enjoy.

In March, 1995, Lakewood citizens

voted to incorporate as a city,

passing with a 60% vote. In

September, seven City Council

Members were elected to form the

city’s first government. Lakewood

officially became a city on

February 28th, 1996, making

it the second largest city in

Pierce County and the

eighth largest city in

the state.

Located just south of the city limits of Tacoma, and adjacent to Joint Base Lewis McCord, Lakewood is easily accessible as well as centrally located in South Puget Sound. Lakewood is within minutes of ferries, beaches, water activities, museums, parks and casinos. Our lodging is typically 30% less than nearby cities, making Lakewood the perfect home base for your Northwest Adventure.

Lakewold GardensLakewold Gardens is the city’s best-known

attraction, and considered one of the

nation’s finest estate gardens. The beautiful

ten-acre garden showcases stunning formal

gardens as well as naturalistic displays. This

includes woodland areas, waterfalls, rock

and alpine gardens, a knot garden, kitchen

garden, shade garden, and fern garden.

Lakewold features rolling lawns, topiary,

statuary and a 230-foot herringbone brick

walkway that leads to the ‘Tea House.’

The collections include over 250 species

of rhododendron, over thirty varieties of

Japanese Maple and many unique trees,

shrubs and groundcovers from around the

world. Self-Guided tours are available April

through September from 10am to 4pm.

Lakewood enjoys one of the most enviable geographic locations in the Pacific Northwest, with five glistening lakes, meandering drives, three major golf courses and a good mix of shopping and entertainment choices.

Thornewood Castle

Thornewood Castle is by far,

the most impressive estate, built on

American Lake between 1909 and

1911. A 400 year old Elizabethan

manor in England was purchased by Mr.

Thorne, dismantled and shipped brick

by brick from England to be included

in the building of Thornewood. The

Thorne Mansion, renovated into a

spectacular Bed & Breakfast, is still

considered one of the most beautiful

estates and gardens in the nation, and

often attracted illustrious people of

the early 1900’s. The Castle starred as

“Rose Red” in Stephen king’s television

mini-series and featured in the made-

for-television movie, “The Diary of

Ellen Rimbauer.” And most recently,

Thornewood’s presence is also evident

in the movie, “There Will Be Blood.”

The sunken secret garden is truly

English in style and plays host to many

weddings and receptions. The mood,

mystery, love, and history continue on

as each guest passes through the 500

year old castle doors. For reservations,

located in the Lakewood Colonial

Center, which has the distinction of

being the oldest shopping center west

of the Mississippi. Here visitors can see

exhibits, artifacts and old photos that

tell the story of Lakewood’s early days

and role in the development of the

historic Fort Steilacoom

Fort Steilacoom was opened in 1849

to establish an American military

presence in Puget Sound and to

protect settlers. Four of the original

quarters remain today as a living

history museum. A diorama of what

the fort looked like at that time can

be seen in the museum’s interpretive

center, along with other exhibits and a

short video of the fort’s history. Fully

furnished quarters show how an officer

and his family, as well as how bachelor

officers lived in the 1860’s. There is

also a Sutter’s Store where visitors can

purchase period replications, books,

toys, souvenirs and other items. Hours

are 1-4 p.m. Sundays. Group tours

available by appointment. Admission

fees: donations are accepted. There

may be a charge for group tours and

special events. Fort Steilacoom is

located at 9601 Steilacoom Blvd. SW

DuPont historical Museum &

Dynamite Train

Discover the history of Native

Americans, Hudson Bay Company

fur traders, missionaries and DuPont

explosive workers through the

Museum’s interpretive displays, photos

and artifacts. Located directly behind

the museum, the Dynamite Train is

the last intact dynamite train in the

State of Washington. Hours are 1-4

pm Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and

Sunday. Located at 207 Barksdale

The museum collects, preserves

and interprets material of historical

significance to the installation and the

military units which have served here.

The museum also strives to foster

an appreciation for the role that the

United States Army played in the

the north shore of American Lake at

82nd Street SW and Veterans Drive

SW. It offers seasonal restrooms, picnic

This 1-acre park provides public boat

launch access to Lake Steilacoom and is

is one of the most popular in the

area. The park offers sports fields, a

At 14,410 feet, Mount Rainier is the

tallest volcano in the 48 contiguous

states and is the highest mountain in

Washington State. It dominates the

horizon for hundreds of miles and

boasts the largest single peak glacial

system outside Alaska. On its slopes

lie spectacular meadows of subalpine

flowers and a skirt of old-growth

Douglas-fir forest found few other

places. Accommodations include

the National Park Inn at 27,000 feet.

Paradise Inn, at 5,400 feet, operates

park has 26 major glaciers, 34 waterfalls,

Metroparks TacomaPoint Defiance Park is one of twenty

largest urban parks in the nation. You

through old growth forest and has

several pull-offs for spectacular views.

Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM)JBLM’s origin dates back to a 2005 Base Realignment

and Closure Commission decision to merge Fort

Lewis, McChord AFB and Yakima Training Center

into a joint base supported by an Army-led Joint

Base Garrison. The Joint Base Garrison consists of

4,700 Soldiers, Airmen and civilian employees. JBLM

has four major areas: JBLM Lewis Main, JBLM Lewis

Main North, JBLM McChord Field and JBLM Yakima

Training Center. In all, JBLM covers approximately

420,000 acres in Southern Puget Sound and Eastern

Lakewood veterans MemorialA memorial to veterans of the Armed Forces of the United

States of America was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 26,

2003, at Lakewood City Hall. The memorial consists of a globe

that denotes that American forces have served throughout

the world in the defense of their country and to preserve the

freedoms we enjoy today. Around the perimeter of the site are
