A laid-back, safe environment filters throughout Madison -- whether you’re taking a walk as neighbors tend to landscaping, riding a bike on a greenway, heading to the park for a good-spirited game or just watching the children play in the front yard while you relax after a day at work.

Madison is one of those places that ‘clicks’ with people. Atypical of many Southern communities, Madison’s population merges people from all parts of the United States — and the world — who value each other’s customs and traditions.

Diversity is embraced, not ostracized. People in Madison learn from their neighbor’s lives, co-workers’ experience and churches’ teachings. in a rare combination, the city offers a sophisticated touch from its citizens while endorsing the centuries-old graciousness of Southern hospitality

and helpfulness. Thousands call Madison home who work in

its city limits, while some residents have careers in nearby Huntsville. Many companies have established operations in or near Madison, offering lucrative jobs in research and technology, like Madison’s largest employer intergraph, the leading global provider of engineering and geospatial software.

in addition, HudsonAlpha Center for Biotechnology has headquarters in Cummings Research Park. Madison residents work for defense contractors at Redstone Arsenal and its support network; in manufacturing; and the aerospace industry with nASA’s Marshall Space flight Center and The Boeing Company.

Attracted by those careers, the majority of Madison residents are well educated and well paid. Their companies and local colleges offer constant

opportunities for professional advancement. Away from work, parents are confident that their students receive the best education possible in Madison City Schools. Parents volunteer in school and extracurricular activities -- from Scouting and indian Princesses to chess clubs and robotics.

During spare time, all ages enjoy Dublin Park recreation center, which offers a double-court gymnasium equipped for basketball and volleyball with an upstairs walking track and a 25-yard, eight-lane, heated indoor swimming pool. Madison Parks and Recreation Department operates from Dublin. A paved walking trail meanders around nine soccer fields, a nine-hole disc golf course and seven tennis courts.

Also at Dublin, a fantasy playground, kid’s kingdom, allows children to exercise body and imagination in a complex built by community volunteers in only a few days of intense work. Home to swim teams and award-winning squads from both Bob Jones High School and James Clemens High School, the outdoor pool includes a diving well and kiddie pool.

After years of improvement and additions, Palmer

Park is home to 13 youth baseball fields and six fields each for softball and soccer. Teams play football in two regulation fields. Palmer has three concession buildings with restrooms and press boxes.

families, groups or maybe singles on a fresh-air date can take advantage of four pavilions and batting cages on Palmer’s grounds. A special playground is designed with Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessibility.

Madison has completed greenways with more green space on future blueprints. The goal of city leaders is to connect the community in pathways to facilitate alternative transportation and promote healthy lifestyles.

Mill Creek Greenway is adjacent to Mill Creek elementary School and its namesake stream. Teachers and students often take nature walks for real-life science discussions. This greenway is home to Madison Dog Park, a fenced field where poodles to pinschers can scamper unleashed.

Just off Hughes Road, Rainbow Mountain Preserve has beautiful rock formations, like the teetering Balance Rock, panoramic views of

At the Madison/Huntsville border, indian Creek Greenway offers a paved path for both bicyclists and pedestrians to enjoy an extended walk or to catch some sunshine while admiring lush foliage.

Bradford Creek Greenway’s trailhead begins at Palmer Park with pleasing views of the creek, hardwood forests and wetlands with fish and birds. The city plans to add a pedestrian and non-motorized corridor. Residents can join the Madison Greenways and Trails organization, which works to preserve natural settings and resources.

in february 2013, Sci-Quest Hands-on Science Center will relocate to Madison. year-round, Sci-Quest offers mind-boggling exhibits, camps, lectures and experiences that meld science learning with science fun.

Festivals, expos and civic pride thrive in MadisonBY gRegg PaRKeR

We’d love to have you. ... Why don’t you join? ... Sure, bring the kids.

feeling like you belong is inherent with Madison living.

Madisonians are ‘joiners.’ They’re enthusiastic about joining and getting involved in civic events. As a by-product, residents hone professional skills, revive a lost talent, reinforce their child’s inclinations and, above all, have fun.

organized by Madison Chamber of Commerce, Connect~2013 in January will assemble residents

to hear Mayor Troy Trulock’s first State of the City address and celebrate another year in Madison -- Alabama’s most progressive and fastest growing city. The black-tie gala is staged in the Davidson Center at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center and brings together elected officials, business leaders, viPs, as well as rank and file.

With their Small Business Awards ceremony, the Madison Chamber recognizes the entrepreneurial spirit, celebrates MCC members who champion small business and acknowledges the small business community’s contribution to the economy and society.

in July, the Chamber presents its annual Business expo and kids’ Day, a tradition for business owners and non-profit organizations for more than 20 years to showcase their products and services. Residents enjoy the introductions and ‘freebies,’ while their children play on inflatable amusements and lick ice cream cones.

Parades offer a ‘family-reunion’ atmosphere with spectators lining Hughes Road and streets in the historic district. Traditions of football homecoming reign when Bob Jones High School and James Clemens High School parade in their colors. The city sponsors an annual Christmas parade with high-stepping fun, floats and a visit by Santa Claus.

A parade also kicks off the Madison Street festival, the city’s premier annual celebration on the first Saturday in october. The festival is part block party, student showcase, shopping extravaganza, fine art exhibits and vendor expo. While checking out the amusements, eat a funnel cake on your way to the car show, with its revved-up engines, shiny chrome and mirror-like polishes.

other car shows are held during the year. Sports-car aficionados have a field day when British roadsters roll in to Dublin Park. vets with Corvettes often show off their dream cars.

Also for four-legged residents, Art 4 Paws combines pet adoption with fine art on the grounds of the quaint gazebo. Artists exhibit and sell their work, while adoption agencies, like Madison Animal Rescue foundation, offer dogs and cats a chance for a new home.

Coinciding with kentucky Derby weekend, Madison’s Run Through the Roses has 10k and 5k courses certified by USA Track & field. The race course meanders through town along plantings of Radrazz knockout roses, Madison’s signature plant.

By mid-afternoon the Derby Days festival brings awareness of north Alabama’s early legacy in Deep South horseracing. Madison Station Historical Preservation Society organizes lawn games and presents live Americana musicians in bluegrass, country and rock genres. Ladies wear extravagant,

over-the-top Derby millinery to carry the theme. in May, festival of the Arts at Bob Jones High

School showcases the remarkable skills of Madison’s teenagers in visual arts, drama, vocal and instrumental music, interior decorating and fashion design. Halls surrounding Zompa Auditorium are packed as the community absorbs the sounds and sights with awestruck reactions.

Little did James Clemens know what he was setting into motion in 1854.

A land speculator from Huntsville, Clemens had the foresight to transact a deal leading to incorporation of the City of Madison. now, 158 years later, his influence came full circle with the naming of Madison’s newest campus, James Clemens High School.

Clemens’ land purchase, now the downtown area, was a sizeable purchase at one-quarter of a square mile. He developed his settlement along the Memphis and Charleston Railroad, halfway between Huntsville to the east and Decatur at the Tennessee River.

Capitalizing on railroad commerce, he built a train depot. Railroad brass dubbed the stop, “Madison Station.”

Clemens and his son Jeremiah were social reformers of sorts, Madison historian John Rankin said. These men freed their slaves in the 1850s, long before the emancipation Proclamation. The last lot that James Clemens sold was to a free, black man.

Clemens first sold land to George Washington ‘G.W.’ Martin, a successful businessman who worked in Triana, then a prosperous port on the Tennessee River about 10 miles south of Madison. Martin brought his mercantile business to Madison Station on the tracks’ south side, recognized as downtown’s

oldest commercial building. Later housing a saloon, the site then was a grocery

store, owned by the Cain family. Cain descendants and siblings Ronnie Williams and Sharon Dinkel restored and revitalized Martin’s storefront at 110 Main Street into Madison Station Antiques in 2010.

Joining Martin on Monopoly-board Main Street in the late 1800s were merchants, a mortician, ‘druggists’ and Bank of Madison. Sprouting tall from red-brick clay fields, cotton reigned as economic king for many decades with four cotton gins in downtown threshing the white gold.

in 1869, the bustling town of Madison Station was incorporated and its name shortened to “Madison.” Madison Methodist and Madison Baptist churches had opened their doors, along with other congregations. Turn-of-the-century Madison welcomed spacious victorian houses and Craftsman bungalows along front Street.

the village Green, a narrow greenway adjacent to the railroad. in 1992, the Madison Street festival committee built the nostalgic Madison Gazebo, grandstand for weekly summer concerts, civic club events or as a quiet book-reading nook.

Today’s octagonal, stilted Roundhouse replicates the original structure built in the 1880s to assist in shipping railroad freight. Again, Madison Street festival organizers rallied to build the Roundhouse in 1986.

By mid-century, the town’s first major transformation occurred with the opening of Redstone Arsenal, drawing job seekers from surrounding counties and eventually employers, including nASA’s Marshall Space flight Center and U.S. Army contractors.

in the late 1900s, the revolution in technology brought engineers and support personnel to nearby Cummings Research Park, The Boeing Company, intergraph Corporation and defense contractors at Redstone Arsenal.

in 1998, possibly Madison’s most dramatic, progressive step was the establishment of its own

separate school district, Madison City Schools. Approximately 9,200 students were enrolled on the first day of the 2012-2013 school year. The district includes Bob Jones and James Clemens high schools, two middle schools and seven elementary schools.

Madison City Schools test scores on national standardized tests are above the national average at all schools. Madison students consistently rank as ‘Alabama’s best’ in all phases of academics, athletics, the fine arts and out-of-classroom experiences like Destination imagination, engineering internships and rocketry.

Bob Jones High School has earned prestigious rankings in “America’s Best High Schools” by the Washington Post and US News & World Report. The Class of 2012 was offered $33,893,493 in scholarships, with 296 students receiving scholarships.

Madison can now boast that it is one of the fastest-growing, progressive-thinking cities in the Southeast -- and the fastest growing city in Alabama with a population of 43,000-plus.

James Clemens knew a good thing when he saw it.

The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker would all agree.

Whatever the field, business people find their niche for clientele and workforce in Madison.

“We started working out of our house in Madison when few medical options were available for Madison,” physical therapist Michelle nesin said. She is co-owner and chief operations officer for nesin Therapy Services P.C.

“Then, we grew to contract services to other facilities and home health. By 2000, insurance demands leveled and we grew as an outpatient facility,” nesin said.

nesin Therapy now has clinics in Madison, Huntsville and Cummings Research Park. Starting with five employees, the company currently has 21 therapists among 33 employees total.

“We have the advantage of one-on-one private sessions, one hour or longer,” nesin said. Treatment is based on manual therapy and biomechanical movements in helping patients in rehabilitation of injury, along with injury prevention.

The nesin family has lived in Madison since 1981 and wanted the city as home base. “We keep headquarters here because we get our business by

word of mouth. in Madison, more people know you, know the business and know the employees. People like doing business with individuals with whom they have relationships.”

Compared to a metropolitan area, Madison offers a more conducive climate for business. “every day, you see people you know. it’s a warm community and small enough that a business of any size can make a difference. i know because we’ve been all sizes at nesin Therapy Services.”

nesin patients and employees benefit from the i-565 interchange, allowing easy access to Madison and Huntsville.

“Health care can be a luxury, even when it’s needed,” nesin said. “Madison residents’ income makes it more feasible for them to see a physical therapist.”

“Madison is a well-educated community; therefore, people are more willing to step beyond even insurance and seek professional services for their health maintenance. That wouldn’t be available in other areas that aren’t as economically stable,” nesin said. -- nesin Therapy Services, 256.461.9654, nesintherapy.com

“Having been in Madison since 1988, i have seen the need for local people, who are aware and involved in the community, to also be available to do business. This is home. Where else could i possibly want to be?” Graham said.

Serving insurance needs, Graham enjoys meeting “all of the new people coming to our area. i like to make them feel like they instantly have a friend here.”

Graham describes Madison as a personable city. “it’s fun to be a business owner who knows the community and its history. This gives me an advantage. i basically can communicate with anyone about almost anything.”

“Most people in Madison are working and responsible residents. They’re aware of insurance needs they are faced with and are always wanting to learn more about what their options may be,” Graham said. -- The keith Graham Agency, 256.874.2888, farmersagent.com/rgraham

“My number one reason for opening a business in Madison is this is the community in which i live,” king-Taylor said. “it’s important to support your community and people with whom you live.”

it’s simple arithmetic. Add 9,200-plus students, 11 campuses and about

950 employees, multiplied by consistent state and national awards. The sum? Madison City Schools.

As faculties strive to meet each child’s individual, each campus nurtures its own distinctive personality. These out-of-the-box solutions empower students now and for the future.

Construction at James Clemens High School finalized in September 2012, establishing Madison’s second high school. The impressive structure has classrooms organized in academic pods of instruction, a commons space, performing arts auditorium and on-site athletic fields.

Content leads build collaboration within each academic department. Pod leads manage phenomenal resources, like the student resource room, and promote engagement across the curriculum. Leads assist with school-level, embedded professional development for teachers.

Bob Jones High School was named in “America’s Best High Schools” by two sources: Washington Post and US News & World Report. in 2012, 121 seniors earned ACT scores of 30 or higher. Students can choose among 28 honors courses, distance learning and 24 advanced placement (AP) subjects.

forensic science teachers Belinda Sewell and Shari Baker incorporate real-life procedures, like fingerprinting; pathology; odontology; tire, shoe and bite impressions; and blood spatter. on campus, Bob Jones students place chicken parts in a simulated ‘body farm’ to track decomposition, time of death and

post-mortem interval. At Discovery Middle School, Patty Collier’s english

students annually attend the Alabama Shakespeare festival (ASf) in Montgomery, but in 2012 the troupe brought A Midsummer Night’s Dream to Madison. About 260 Discovery students attended in Zompa Auditorium at Bob Jones.

in 1998, possibly Madison’s most significant milestone occurred with the founding of a separate city school district -- Madison City Schools.

Superintendent Dr. Dee fowler said the district evolved when “expectations of the City of Madison were not the same expectations of Madison County Schools. The difference in those expectations led to the birth of Madison City Schools.”

fowler has served as superintendent since January 2007.

“Madison County Schools offered a very good education, but residents of Madison wanted to go to great,” fowler said. “financial barriers prevented Madison County from allowing Madison to assume

the expectations we wanted.” The district’s predominate goal is to meet the needs

of every child, whether the graduate leaves Bob Jones or James Clemens high school prepared to enter the workforce, enroll in college or pursue military service. “Trying to meet the needs of every child individually separates us from other school districts,” fowler said.

James Clemens’ opening has led to a “redefinition of our secondary schools” with two high schools in Madison. Just as James Clemens’ population has pressures and new expectations, “the converse is true at Bob Jones with pressures and expectations in redefining itself,” fowler said.

Middle schools in Madison also transformed to relinquish ninth-graders to attend the high schools. “All secondary schools are finding new identities,”

fowler said. The district’s staff has been pleased with the start

of the 2012-2013 school year. Plans and vision for the future are on track. Just like the City of Madison, growth must remain an attribute for Madison City Schools. “A major challenge is keep growth positive,” fowler said. “We’ve seen unprecedented growth in recent years. Growth brings a wealth of diversity, which brings strength to the system as our young citizens learn to be our leaders for the years to come.”

Madison teachers continuously learn, “always honing their skills. They work diligently in professional development to stay on the cutting edge. Professional development is not a ‘got-to’ chore but a ‘get-to’ opportunity to learn,” fowler said.

Moving forward is key. “There’s no such thing as staying the same; you go backwards. our room for improvement is to individualize learning. We’re working very hard in that direction,” he said.

A one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work. “We tailor instruction for each child,” fowler said. “Teachers are working diligently with tiered learning in an effort to personalize education.”
