Henry and Gagool arrived at the entrance of King Solomon’s mine. Everyone except Infadoos went through a narrow door and walked along a narrow path into a huge, badly-lit cave filled with columns of white rock. At the end of the cave, they went through a doorway into the Place of Death, where many white figures sat around a large stone table. One of the figures was Twala, whose head was on his knees. Gagool moved a secret stone and they entered the treasure room. Foulata waited just inside the door.

25 Although he says that he is not a brave man (Chapter 1), he is not afraid to accept Sir Henry’s dangerous offer. He is not afraid of the Kukuanas when they first appear, or of Twana, and he fights bravely in the battle.
He is not greedy. He is mainly interested in the diamonds and money, but he wants the money for his son’s future, not for himself. He also offers to share his diamonds with Sir Henry’s brother.
He is perhaps cruel. He is a hunter, so he kills animals without much thought. He also cuts off Twala’s head with an axe after he is dead.
He is intelligent in a practical way. He has a number of good ideas. For example, he pretends to the Kukuanas that he and his friends are from another world; he notices the fresh air in the treasure room. He can also speak more than one African language.
