Oli Bell 2017 will be a year Kingsdon Cricketer Oli Bell will never forget. The year started with Oli becoming ITV’s horse racing presenter, a position of which he was rightly proud. He has become very popular with the viewers who love his friendly smiling and humor-ous presentation manner in front of the camera. This years Ascot Gold Cup will be a race Oli will nev-er forget. The winning horse, Big Orange was trained by Oli’s uncle, Michael Bell. The race commentary was by Oli’s father, Rupert Bell, all this after Oli had introduced the race and runners. Is there a woman out there who doesn't fancy Oli Bell? The ITV presenter can now add the Queen to his end-less list of admirers after the pair enjoyed a prolonged chat in the Royal Ascot parade ring on Friday after-noon. It sugar-coated a wonderful week for the young presenter who has become the star striker on the ITV racing team. From his spontaneous sprint (below right) to try to catch Big Orange after his Gold Cup triumph, to interviewing women drinking champagne at half past ten in the morning, Bell seems comfortable in every single position on the field. (Racing Post)

Just to cap the day off Oli was presented with a bouquet for being the best turned out member of the ITV team.

Thank You

Kingsdon Community Shop News Everyone at the shop would like to thank Jackie Ellis for keeping our little tea room supplied with beauti-ful cakes for all to enjoy every week. Since opening that would be about 180 cakes - Wow!! Join us for a cuppa & a piece of lovely cake, or we can pop a slice into a bag for you to enjoy at home.

Our next Cream Tea is on 22nd July…

rumour has it there could be a tipple tasting too!!

What is a cream tea? A traditional cream tea (also referred to as a Devonshire cream tea) is a speciality of Devon and Cornwall where a pot of tea is served with scones, jam and clotted cream. The scone is a single-serving unsweetened cake, usually made of flour, fat, and milk. Clotted cream is a smooth thick cream traditionally made in Devon and Cornwall by heating unpasteurised cow’s milk which is left in a shallow pan for many hours causing the cream to rise to the surface and ‘clot’. Cream teas are becoming more popular outside of the Westcoun-try with lots of upmarket hotels in London now serving them.

The origin of cream teas: It’s claimed that the origin of the cream tea dates back to the 11th century where monks in Tavistock Abbey in Devon, would serve bread with cream and jam. At this time, cream was plentiful in Dev-on, but jam was much more of a luxury item that only the wealthy could afford, so a small amount of jam was served on top of the cream to be more noticeable.

Devon and Cornish Cream Tea Differences: Devon and Cornwall enjoy lots of debate regarding the best way to eat a cream tea. In Devon, they favour putting the jam on top, whilst in Cornwall they prefer to serve the cream on top. Throughout Devon it is believed that the cream tea began with jam

on top and stick to this traditional method of serving it, with the cream acting like the butter underneath. All hotels and tearooms throughout the two counties avoid being drawn into the debate by serving the cream and jam separately allowing you to decide for yourself which is the best way Thanks to the new volunteers who have been helping us out while we have the holiday season upon us. We still have a few gaps if anyone has a couple of hours

a week to spare. Please speak to Rosemary or Wally. We are also looking for someone to do the Friday 10am to 12 noon shift on a regular basis.

A reminder that we do have age restricted products in the shop, such as alcohol, matches, firelighters and medication. Please do not send your children in to purchase such items. Thank you.

A Note from the Manager Whilst standing out-side the shop the other day, I spent a moment look-ing at all the beautiful flowers in baskets and tubs along the rails and in planters on the floor. They look absolutely splendid, all there to brighten our little shop up. I especially love our own little Min-ion sporting his new hairstyle for this year. Our thanks go to Wally & Marilyn for the time they have put in to give us such a glorious display. Rosemary.

SLIPPERY CUSTOMERS By Peter Crowter

The river that winds below Kingsdon, was a popular home for the eel, We used different methods to catch them, for mother to fry for a meal,

One way was to wade in the river, and carefully lift up a stone, And if you have been very gentle, an eel might be lying there prone.

And what we did then was not pleasant, and certainly not for the eel,

So now close your eyes if you’re squeamish, cause this bit may well not appeal. We harpooned the slippery creature, with a fork that we’d ‘borrowed from mum ,

But don’t expect him to come quietly, there’s no way that he will succumb.

An eel will resist all your efforts, no matter what methods you try, His life it seem cannot be ended, he simply refuses to die.

A blow to the head doesn’t faze him, it really is just no avail, Some say that the place where you hit him, is not on the head but the tail.

I once caught I think t’was a dozen, I hopped out the river to dry,

I said to my mate, ‘I’m off home now, to take these for mother to fry,’ My bike had a bag on the saddle, I thought that would be a safe place,

I popped them all in strapped the cover, set off at a leisurely pace.

I got home and shouted to mother, ‘I’ve brought you some eels you can cook.’ She came out the door to inspect them. ‘They’re here in my saddlebag, look.’

I carefully undid the cover, mother peered in and said, ‘Where?’ They all had mysteriously vanished, you could say the cupboard was bare.

I once got some eels home quite safely, and all went according to plan,

I gutted, beheaded and skinned them, put them in a deep-sided pan. I went to bed pleased with my efforts, I need not do anything more,

Next morning mum went in the kitchen, those darn eels were all on the floor.

Eels are remarkable creatures, they breed in the Sargasso Sea, They find their way back to our rivers, amazing I think you’ll agree.

A journey to make the mind boggle, most creatures would not even try, And after that epic adventure, no wonder they don’t want to die.

4. Matters arising not covered by agenda items D.Beswick has renewed our insurance with our current insurance providers, Zurich. K.Hatt has booked the NHS health checks for the 26th August. Quotations for CPR and defibrillator training have been ob-tained and a company called JaLee are the cheapest at £150 +vat for 2-3 hours on 26th August. Apex may cover the costs for us. Phillip proposed that we book JaLee, Guy O seconded, all in favour. Action – K.Hatt to book training and contact Apex. A note went in the chronicle about tablet training and no-one has expressed any interest. We have received more detail on 106 money and we are going to be able to use it for the new sport field. Further discussion needs to be had with Rob Parr. Action- D.Beswick to contact Rob Parr. P.Waters will put the note about the damaged tree in next chronicle L.Moore has organized the clerk standing order for the 18th of each month.

5. Chairman’s Report: Nothing to add. 6. Correspondence: British Merchant Navy – fly the red ensign; have written encouraging us to do something around the village. 8. Kingsdon Estate: There has been an article in the paper advertising the farm land for sell. This is currently all we know. The land to be sold in the village is still very much in discussion and we are constantly in conversation with Greenslade Tay-lor Hunt.

A parishioner asked about the 1065 acres being sold in 6 lots. - These are not development sites that will affect us.

9. Village Hall: We are still waiting for the survey. We are not sure the state of the building. We are waiting for the two quotations for carrying out the survey. The pros and cons of keeping the current hall or building a new one will be fully discussed. If the village hall were wished to be removed, the Convenant says we have to have full consultation. This will include Cats-gore and Lytes Cary.

10. Allotments: G.Osborne explained that some people have complained that some allotments have been looking untidy. There is an allotment plan. Guy felt the allotments themselves were not too bad. But the central area for the fire area seems to be getting out of control. A plot next to a parishioner has not been tended to, it is a vacant plot and it is affecting his plot. It will take a lot of work to make it workable again as it has several stone paths. It would need putting weed killer on for 12 months but who would want to do this? Other plot holders to attempt to help. It is not dealt with fairly; some are not able to do it. The parish council need to deal with it. This may mean increasing the price. Article to go in the chronicle to encourage more plot holders. A present plot holder would find a raise acceptable. It is cur-rently only £8 a year which is very cheap. Could the stone path one, which is divided up, be a community plot, for children to do? Volunteers could clear it first. Trees

Dear all.

Over the last few months there's been a couple of instances where someone has damaged or attempted to damage some new-ly planted trees.

All trees have been planted for the benefit of the village and future generations to enjoy. We can't all agree all of the time but if anyone feels strongly about a tree that, in their mind, has been planted in the wrong place please do contact myself or another council member.

Thank you. Phillip Waters.

Under 16’s - Free for all nights when

accompanied by an adult

Mike and Yvonne were 85 years old and had been married for sixty years. Though they were far from rich, they man-aged to get by because they carefully watched their pen-nies. Though not young, they were both in very good health, largely due to Yvonne's insistence on healthy foods and exercise for the last decade. One day, their good health didn't help when they went on a vacation and their plane crashed, sending them off to Heav-en. They reached the pearly gates, and St. Peter escorted them inside. He took them to a beautiful mansion, fur-nished in gold and fine silks, with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favourite clothes in the closet. They gasped in astonishment when he said, 'Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now.' Mike asked Peter how much all this was going to cost. 'Why, nothing,' Peter replied, 'remember, this is your re-ward in Heaven.' Mike looked out the window and right there he saw a championship golf course, finer and more beautiful than any ever built on Earth.. 'What are the greens fees?,' grumbled Mike.. 'This is heaven,' St. Peter replied. 'You can play for free, every day.' Next they went to the clubhouse and saw the lavish buffet lunch. 'Don't even ask,' said St. Peter to Mike. This is Heaven, it is all free for you to enjoy.' Mike looked around and nervously asked Yvonne 'Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods and the decaffeinated tea?' 'That's the best part,' St. Peter replied. 'You can eat and drink as much as you like and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!' 'No gym to work out at all?' said Mike 'Not unless you want to,' was the answer. 'No testing my sugar or blood pressure or...' 'Never again' Mike glared at Yvonne and said, 'You and your Bran Flakes. We could have been here years ago!' As she slid behind the wheel for her first driving lesson, the young lady couldn’t contain her excitement. "You need to make adjustments so the car is comfortable for you," the instructor began. "Now, what’s the first thing you should do?" "Change the radio station," she said. One evening after dinner, my five-year-old son Brian no-ticed that his mother had gone out. In answer to his ques-tions, I told him, "Mommy is at a Tupperware party." This explanation satisfied him for only a moment. Puzzled, he asked, "What’s a Tupperware party, Dad?" I’ve always given my son honest answers, so I figured a simple explanation would be the best approach. "Well, Bri-an," I said, "at a Tupperware party, a bunch of ladies sit around and talk about plastic bowls." Brian nodded, indicating that he understood. Then he burst into laughter. "Come on, Dad," he said. "What is it really?" Why did the dancing partner of Ginger Rogers live in a bungalow……….because he was aFred Astaire Two political candidates were having a heated debate. Finally, one of them jumped up and yelled at the other, "What about the powerful interest that controls you?" And the other guy screamed back, "You leave my wife out of this!" There comes a time when all people break down and do the unthinkable... They read the manual!

Page 16

I don't believe in reincarnation... I didn't believe in it the last time, either. Not everyone enjoys singing ensembles... It's an 'a-choir-ed' taste. A Texas cowboy appeared before St. Peter at the pearly gates. “Have you ever done anything of particular merit?” St. Peter asked. “Well, I can think of one thing,” the cowboy offered. “On a trip to the Black Hills in South Dakota, I came upon a gang of bikers who were threatening a young woman. I directed them to leave her alone, but they wouldn’t listen. So, I approached the largest and most heavily tattooed bik-er, smacked him in the face, kicked his bike over, ripped out his nose ring, and threw it on the ground.” I yelled, “Now back off!! Or I’ll kick the heck out of all of you!!” St. Peter was impressed. He asked, “When did this hap-pen?” “Just a couple of minutes ago …” An employee needed a raise, so he had to have that big talk with the boss that we all hate having. But this guy had a trick up his sleeve. Employee: Excuse me sir, may I talk to you? Boss: Sure, come on in. What can I do for you? Employee: Well sir, as you know, I have been an employee of this prestigious firm for over ten years. Boss: Yes, and we’re glad to have you with us. Employee: I won’t beat around the bush. Sir, I would like a raise. I currently have four companies after me and so I de-cided to talk to you first. Boss: A raise? I would love to give you a raise, but this is just not the right time. Employee: I understand your position, and I know that these are rough times economically, but you must also take into consideration my hard work, pro-activeness and loyal-ty to this company for over a decade. I want to keep work-ing here, but that needs to go both ways. Boss: Taking into account these factors, and considering I don’t want to start a brain drain, I’m willing to offer you a ten percent raise and an extra five days of vacation time. How does that sound? Employee: Great! It’s a deal! Thank you, sir! Boss: Before you go, just out of curiosity, which companies were after you? Employee: Oh, the Electric Company, Gas Company, Wa-ter Company and the Mortgage Company! Mick: “Hey Paddy, I heard you were arrested for annoying your neighbours by playing endless Englebert Humperdink songs, what happened? Paddy: “Police released me, let me go…..” Burnt my Hawaiian pizza today….. Should have put it on aloha setting. If you see someone doing a crossword today…. lean over and say “ 7 up is lemonade”!! My wife and I were comparing notes the other day. "I have a higher IQ, did better on my SAT's, and make more money than you," she pointed out. "Yeah, but when you step back and look at the big picture, I’m still ahead," I said. She looked mystified. "How do you figure?" "I married better," I replied.

Beware: your barbecue could cause a blaze

Enjoy that summer barbecue but take care to not start a fire by discarding the ashes into your rubbish bin or black sacks, Somerset Waste Partnership is warning.

Drench ashes with water or let them cool completely to avoid a rubbish fire threatening your home and family or causing a blaze in a waste truck or at a landfill site.

The last major landfill fire in Somerset took days to put out, while across the UK, people have died in fires that began in rub-bish bins.

It is not just barbecue coals. Never add these danger items to your rubbish: • Hot ash or part-burned materials from domestic or garden fires or barbecues. • Used portable barbeques whose charcoal may not be completely cold. • Household or vehicle batteries that may short out or cause sparks. • Broken glass not carefully wrapped or bagged could act as a magnifying lens. • Aerosols may get hot or be pierced during the collection and landfill process.

The advice is simple in each case: • Let ash and portable barbecues completely cool, or fully damp down with water. • Recycle vehicle batteries through any one of Somerset’s 16 recycling sites. • Take household batteries to recycling sites or high street stores that collect them. • Carefully wrap and bag broken glass, which should also never go in recycling boxes. • Use up aerosols completely, do not squash, and then add them to recycling boxes.

A SWP spokesperson said: “It is simple to stay safe with rubbish and prevent fires. Fully damp down the barbecue and think through the risks so you do not put your loved ones in danger.” For more about what to recycle, where and how, visit: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk.
