Today, we are incredibly proud to report that 100% of KIPP DC College Preparatory’s senior class has been accepted to college! KCP’s founding class has been accepted to over 150 different colleges and has earned more than two million dollars in college scholarships. With students selected for the Gates Millen- nium Scholarship, the POSSE Scholars program, and as Presidential Scholars and Deans Schol- ars at colleges across the country, KIPP DC College Preparatory has set a high bar for future graduates. “The founding class at KIPP DC College Preparatory has proven what we always knew was pos- sible,” said KIPP DC President and COO Allison Fansler. “With hard work, high expectations, and a rigorous college preparatory curriculum, our students are ready to make their way not just to, but through college. We are excited for this next chapter of their journey.” As one senior, Jenny Jones, explains, “I feel as though KIPP DC has helped me to believe and know that I really can do whatever I set my mind to do. I don’t know if it’s a confidence thing or if it is just feeling it in your gut that this really can happen, but I know that I can do whatever I set my mind to do. I am going to college.” Jenny is currently deciding between Dartmouth Col- lege, Davidson College, and Tulane University. We could not be more excited for our founding class at KCP. In late February, Mathematica released its second report on the impact of KIPP schools. It is the most rigorous, comprehensive study of any charter school network in the country to date. Their research methodology took great care in addressing some of the common misconcep- tions about the source of KIPP’s success, including the role that parental involvement plays, the idea that we select or “cream” the best students, and the idea that our schools simply “teach to the test” in math and reading. KIPP DC middle schools (KEY, AIM, and WILL) played important roles in the study’s match comparison component and lottery sample experimental design. A combined 21 years of our student achievement results in math, reading, and science were used in the research. The findings make it clear that KIPP middle schools have positive and statistically significant impacts on student achievement. On average, over three years at KIPP schools, students make: 11 months of additional learning growth in math; 8 months of additional learning growth in reading; 14 months of additional learning growth in science; and 11 months of ad- ditional learning growth in social studies. This third party research confirms what KIPP DC has known for more than twelve years -- that hard-working teachers and students can redefine what is possible and set a new stan- dard for success. mathematica report confirms that kipp middle schools have a significant impact on student achievement 100% of the senior class at kipp dc college preparatory has been accepted to college

In late February, Mathematica released its second report on the impact of KIPP schools. It is the most rigorous, comprehensive study of any charter school network in the country to date. Their research methodology took great care in addressing some of the common misconcep-tions about the source of KIPP’s success, including the role that parental involvement plays, the idea that we select or “cream” the best students, and the idea that our schools simply “teach to the test” in math and reading.

KIPP DC middle schools (KEY, AIM, and WILL) played important roles in the study’s match comparison component and lottery sample experimental design. A combined 21 years of our student achievement results in math, reading, and science were used in the research.

Donny Tiengtum, founding principal of Connect Academy early childhood school, and Lindsey Hoy, founding principal of Spring Academy ele-mentary school, are counting down the days until the opening of their schools this summer. In their first year, Connect Academy will serve three- and four-year-old students in PreKindergarten and Spring Academy will serve Kindergarten students. Ultimately, Connect will serve PreK3 through Kindergarten and Spring will serve first through fourth grade.

Both schools will be located at KIPP DC’s new Webb Campus in Ward 5. Formerly the site of Webb Elementary School, the campus is cur-rently undergoing a dramatic transformation and renovation.

Donny and Lindsey are former KIPP DC LEAP Academy teachers who were selected for KIPP’s prestigious Fisher Fellows program where they were trained to open new KIPP schools. They can’t wait to welcome young KIPPsters to the new Webb Campus in northeast D.C.!

On Friday, March 22nd, more than 400 people came to Nationals Park to celebrate and sup-port KIPP DC. This year’s event spanned across five spaces at the stadium: the Lexus Presidents Club, the PNC Diamond Club, the players’ club-house, the batting cages, and the dugout. Guests had a chance to learn more about KIPP DC, bid on silent auction items, have photos taken with Teddy, and enjoy the March Madness games with great food, drink, and company!

With sponsorships, ticket purchases, and silent auction donations, we were able to raise nearly $250,000 to support our programs, schools and - most importantly - our students. Thanks to ev-eryone who came out to support KIPP DC. We hope to see you again next year at Nats Park!

On March 14th, ten KIPP DC alumni in high school and college had the opportunity to meet Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s Chief Operating Officer and author of Lean In. Sheryl graciously provided each young woman with an advanced copy of her book, which explores the many challenges that women face as they strive for success. In a private, one-on-one session, our alumni had the opportunity to engage Sheryl in a discussion about her life experiences and the themes of her book. After this incredible experience, all of the attendees had the chance to enjoy her book talk with Michelle Norris of NPR. It was an inspiring evening that encour-aged our young women to “lean in,” believe in them-selves, and pursue professional and personal success.

KIPP DC Heights Academy students are learning the basics of golf through free lessons provided by First Tee. First Tee is an international youth development organization that uses the game of golf to teach val-ues like integrity, respect, and perseverance. KIPPsters are learning golf fundamentals both during the week at school and at local golf courses on Saturdays. Thanks to First Tee for providing our students with access to a new sport!

On April 19th, KIPP DC celebrated the grand opening of the newly renovated Fletcher Johnson Field. The field space, which is located across the street from KIPP DC’s Benning Road Campus had deteriorated over the years and sat largely unused. With the support of the city, KIPP DC was able to negotiate a lease for the field and installed a professional quality, synthetic turf field, and upgraded the safety and security at the site by installing improved lighting and fencing.

Community members, partner organizations, philanthropists, and politicians were on hand to help KIPP DC celebrate the improvements to Fletcher Johnson Field. The ribbon cutting ceremony included remarks from Amy Nakamota, DC Scores President and CEO; Julia Irving, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Met-ropolitan Police Department; Ed Fisher, Chief of Staff for Councilwoman Yvette Alexander; and Tony Robinson, Director of Public Affairs for the Office of the City Administrator. The ceremony also included a special tribute to the late Richard “Dick” England, who, along with his wife, helped to make the field renovation pos-sible. His family was presented with a plaque that will remain at the field as a tribute to his legacy. After the ribbon cutting ceremony, KIPPsters took to the field to show off their soccer skills.

Today, more than 1,000 KIPPsters and members of the surrounding community have access to the state-of-the-art recreation site. And, through partnerships with U.S. Soccer Foundation, the Boys & Girls Club of Greater Washington, DC Scores, and the community, the field now hosts athletic programming, practices, and games for both KIPP DC and the greater Benning Heights community.
