I would like to talk about Klaipeda university. It is the youngest country’s university, which is evolving into an

independent teaching and research center.

(Firstly, I would like to tell) I would like to start by telling you about its history. Klaipeda University

was established in 1990 on the basis of several faculties and started its academic activities in 1991. Klaipeda

University was founded for the purposes of research and studies in marine topics, promotion of LithuanianWestern region’s development, and enhancement of Lithuania's participation in shaping the Baltic Sea region.

Klaipėda University occupies a former headquarters. The territory has 6 Neo-Gothic buildings that are

declared monuments of architecture. In the first half of the 20th century these two – four storey red brick

buildings, erected in 1904 – 1907, were a place of two residential blocks for servicemen, a chapel-canteen-club,

headquarters and a guardhouse, a residential block for officers and an accouterments storehouse. In different

periods it was a place for German, French, Lithuanian and Russian troops. After the withdrawal of the

Soviet army in 1993, the government gave the premises to the university.

(Secondly, I would like to talk about) Let me turn now to Klaipeda University’s education system.

It offers a developed three-level study system: 67 bachelor, 4 specialized vocational, 48

master, 3 doctoral study programs. It also offers 7 international study programs for foreign

students. The university is able to follow curricula that meet the requirements of European

and American universities. The subjects on offer are diverse –  from ballroom dancing and

theatre directing to engineering and administration. Students can learn port administration

and management at the Maritime Institute, the Department of Marine Technology and the

Maritime College. The university is engaged in important research in the areas of shipping,

maritime ecology and port economics, which is of vital importance to the countries of the

Baltic Sea region. Klaipėda University owns „Brabander“ - the largest Lithuanian exploratory

 –  sail training vessel, designed for students’ practice and marine expeditions. Also University

owns yacht „Odisėja“ for marine expeditions and sail training. A team of professors and

students from the Department of Natural Sciences is conducting research into the ecology ofthe Baltic Sea and the rivers that flow into it. Future historians, linguists and musicologists

study the history and linguistic and cultural heritage of western Lithuania and former Prussia.

Research is carried out together with scholars from Germany, Poland, Latvia and Sweden.

The Department of Art is the only one of its kind in the country, with specialties in

choreography, music teaching, jazz and singing, among many others. The department’s dance

company, called Zuvedra (Seagull), has won prizes in Latin American dancing at world and

European competitions. The university also has departments of Humanities, Pedagogies,

Social Sciences and 20 research centers, including centers for American, Scandinavian,

Oriental and Baltic studies.

of the Student Union is to represent students’ view for the university’s administration and

other institutions. In addition to this, KUSS presents quite a big number of services in the

fields of academic and social affairs, information and leisure activities for its members and
