Fall has officially arrived, and has
ushered in some cooler temperatures,
but we hope your council is running
“hot” in terms of programming and mem-
bership.
Hopefully your council is partici-
pating in the “Charitable Service Out-
reach Week” from October 3-11. We ask
that you make a special effort to conduct charitable programs in your parish
and community at this time. Make sure that your council is visible in doing
these programs, and be sure to ask non-members to help out with them. If
a man sees, or especially if he helps, the Knights conduct a charitable
program which benefits his church or community in some way, he is much
more likely to join. The reason Supreme has set the Charitable Service
Week for October 3-11 is because they would like to have all councils do
a Membership Drive the weekend of October 9-11. As you may know, that
is also the same weekend as we have our Drive for Persons with Develop-
mental Disabilities scheduled. So if you need to move your Service
Outreach Week and Membership Drive back by a week, that is fine. The
most important thing is to get out and do something for your parish and
community, and then follow that up with a Membership Drive.
I would also like to suggest that you keep track of the service programs
you performed, and how many people (and man-hours) went into doing it.
By keeping track of this information as you do the project, it will make it
much easier next January when you go to fill out your Form 1728, the
Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity. Plus - please remember that you are
also asked to include the volunteer hours provided by NON-MEMBERS
within your activities as well. If you had wives, children and non-members
help out with a project, please include those numbers as well!
As I noted above, our Drive for Persons with Developmental Disabili-
ties is scheduled for October 9-11. We ask that you conduct it on that
weekend, because we really want it to be a state-wide coordinated effort,
but we know that sometimes it works better for your parish, or at other
places where you collect donations, to move it to a different weekend. The
most important thing is that you conduct a drive! There have been several
kick-off events held throughout the state, and I hope you have been able to
attend one of them. Colleen Dolnick from the KofC Developmental Center
at Cardinal Glennon and Mary (Bauer) Niswonger from Special Olympics
Missouri have been at these events and have told and shown just how much
of an impact our donations have on those with intellectual disabilities.
You will also be receiving your fall appeal letter for the Religious
Information Bureau (RIB) sometime this month. I ask that you honor the
memory of long time RIB Chairman Fr. Oscar Lukefahr, who passed away
in August, by making a generous donation. And what would please Fr.
Luke just as much is for everyone who reads this to take one of the home
study courses offered through the Catholic Home Study Service. We as
Knights help to fund this program, and we would like all Knights to take
at least one course.
I am also going to start highlighting one of the “Featured Programs”
from Supreme in each of my monthly articles. If you complete one of these
“featured” programs, meeting Supreme’s specific guidelines, this will
count for all four programs needed when filling out your Columbian Award
Application (#SP-7). This month – Church Activities – RSVP: If your
council supports a seminarian or novice through the RSVP program (gives
them $500 to help with their education and provides moral and spiritual
support for them), and submits the RSVP Refund / Plaque Application
(Form #2863) to Supreme, this will fulfill all 4 requirements for Church
Activities on your Columbian Award application. Many councils already
support a seminarian using RSVP, so this is a very easy way to get all of
your church activities covered in your Columbian Award application.
I would also like to encourage you to read over each of the articles in this
newsletter. These Directors devote many hours of time in putting programs
together which help our Church and Communities. Read their articles and
I’m sure you will find something which will energize and strengthen your
council. And remember if you need help in getting something going, please
contact us and we will be glad to help!
We are near the end of the sum-
mer membership drought and have
come out of it in pretty good shape.
We have been net/net positive for
the first 3 months of the year and
that is a good indicator that we have
moved away from the large number
of suspensions that we experienced
last year. We have 1 new Council
instituted at St. Joseph in Clayton
and need 2 more to reach our quota
for the year. We are at 56 Round
Tables and our quota was 50. Con-
gratulations to Ray Olsen for a job
well done on the Round Tables.
Everything is attainable with a little
work. Why don’t we as leaders go
out and recruit the first new mem-
bers of the year for our Councils by
setting an example for all to follow.
We are entering October and this
is the month for Church Drives.
Please make sure that all Councils
have scheduled a Church Drive.
This is one of the largest member-
ship drives that we do statewide
and it is imperative that we have
good numbers if we want to make
Circle of Honor. The state mem-
bership team is there if you need
assistance with your drive.
Remember that there will be re-
porting due from the D.D.’s con-
cerning which Councils held drives
and where. There will also be a
second phase of reporting asking
for raw numbers on Form 100’s
signed and Degrees held in asso-
ciation with the drive.
Last year we were fortunate to
have Supreme MPC Tom Ciborski
spend 2 full weeks in Missouri and
that really helped bump the mem-
bership numbers last year. Our new
MPC Dannie Harris will be touring
Missouri during the last week of
September. By the time that you
read this he will probably have com-
pleted his visit. I hope that you have
attended and picked up the valu-
able information that he will be
presenting.
I will close as usual with Su-
preme Knight Carl Andersons’
comments that “It is the moral re-
sponsibility of each and every
Knight to go out and recruit new
members into our Order.” Our con-
tinued success and our status as a
“Top 10 Jurisdiction” depend on it!
We send out two letters each year
to every Missouri Knight. These let-
ters include information about the Re-
ligious Information Bureau and re-
mind us of our goals in supporting the
R.I.B. They also include a return en-
velope making it easy to donate to our
Program of Evangelization. The first
of these two letters, the Fall appeal
letter, will be arriving this in October.
As leaders in the Knights of Colum-
bus, your assistance in bringing atten-
tion to the appeal letter at the Council
level is very important. Each of us are
in a position to stress the importance
of the R.I.B. and all of the good it does
in helping to educate people about
Catholicism. The good works of the
R.I.B. cannot happen without our do-
nations.
The Fall appeal letter is also help-
ful in reminding Council’s of the
“quota letter” that went out in August.
The quota letter spells out how each
Council can meet its goals this year
for providing support to the Religious
Information Bureau. The appeal letter
is a reminder of the importance of
attending to these goals while Frater-
nal Year is still young. Each donation
received is credited to the quota
amount for that member’s Council. If
someone does another copy of the
letter, please contact myself or Eric
Bruns.
Financial support is critical to pro-
moting the evangelization efforts of
the R.I.B., but it is not the only way
that we can help promote the R.I.B.
We want as many people as possible
to enroll in the Catholic Home Study
Courses available through the R.I.B.
This includes us as Knights of Colum-
bus. It is easy to enroll and it is free.
Would you like to more fully under-
stand our Faith and its role in the
modern world? Visit www.morib.org
or find the enrollment form in the
Program Manual, and pick the course
that most interests you. Would you
like to help the members of your com-
munity and your fellow parishioners
better understand Catholicism? Read
one or more of the course books and
you will be a valuable resource for
spreading the word about the R.I.B.
Fr. Lukefahr wrote all of these books.
Read one of them and you will truly
appreciate the talent and devotion to
our Church that he had.
We are always looking for ways to
increase our membership. What bet-
ter way to show a Catholic man the
full value of membership in our Order
by pointing him to the R.I.B? If a
prospective member wants to know
more about what the Missouri Knights
of Columbus does, point him to the
R.I.B.

October is the time to focus on
your council’s Drive for Persons with
Developmental Disabilities. It is im-
portant that every council participate in
the 3D Drive. This is the single biggest
statewide activity of the Knights of
Columbus, and it supports the Knights
of Columbus Developmental Center at Cardinal Glennon Children’s
Hospital. This is the only freestanding center of its kind and it bears
our name. Make sure you are lining up plenty of help for your
locations.
If your Council did not participate in the 3D Drive last year,
Chairman Roland Cretel Jr., Dave Bramman, or myself will be
contacting you to figure out how your Council can participate this
year. If you need a certificate of insurance for one of your locations,
please email Roland, David, or myself and we will get that certificate
for you.
On November 8 at Rams Park we will be celebrating your success in
this year’s 3D Drive. Every Council is invited to nominate a most
valuable performer in their 3D Drive. That person, along with your
Council’s Chairman and Grand Knight are invited to attend this event
with more details to follow.
This is the time to be planning your support for Special Olympics.
If your Council has not pledged in our Million Dollar Challenge for
the Training for Life Campus, this is a great time to do so. There are
gold, silver, and bronze options and we encourage every Council to
pledge their support to this project. Then, your Councils can plan
fundraising to meet their pledge. Chairman Jim O’Fallon will be glad
to help you with your fundraising and pledge questions.
Now is a good time to contact your pastor about a Wheelchair
Sunday. Chairman Cliff Miller is looking for several Councils and
parishes around the state to host these events. This is a great way to
get your parish involved with your council in this worthy cause.
Chairman Tom Caffrey continues to work on our Coats for Kids
and Food for Families Programs. As we head into the upcoming
holiday season, both these programs take center stage. Please contact
Tom and get involved in these programs.
Thanks for all you do to make our Community Activities a success.

I hope you take a chance to make one
of the three pilgrimages that we offered
you this year. Depending on when this
newsletter goes out, you still may be able
to make one of the two on October 4th,
either Mary Mother of Church in Laurie or
St. Ferdinand Shrine in Florissant. Check
the Missouri State website for the details.
The Fall is a season of change and a
good time to have your Church Chairman
search out Faith Enrichment activities. When we grow stronger in our Faith
or in our Marriages, we are a Stronger Church.
Be sure to look at your Diocese websites for faith enrichment activities
that will be offered. The Family Life office is a great site to contact as well.
If each office of the Diocese has a Facebook page, be sure to join and check
it frequently. Your Diocesan Chairman may also be aware of activities that
are being promoted. And be sure to contact the Faith Enrichment priest in
your Diocese for ideas. The Supreme Council website also has a lot of great
information on the “Know Your Faith” tab. Soon we will be getting the Holy
Family icons from Supreme and as soon as we get them, Marion Hour
Chairman Deacon Rick Boyle will be arranging them to be distributed to the
District Deputies and then available for your Council.
Another exciting program that is offered to you is That Man is You or
TMIY. This is an interactive men’s program combining the best research
from science with the teaching of the Catholic faith and the wisdom of the
saints to develop the vision of man fully alive. The program runs in two 13
week sessions. The Fall program titled “Spirit of Nazareth” will encompass
the previous 4 year programs in review. More information can be found at
www.thatmanisyou.org.
Another enrichment from the same developers of TMIY is The Choice
Wine. This is a 9 week program to take you through the 7 steps to a
superabundant marriage. And who does not want a superabundant marriage!
The 7 steps integrate the latest findings from modern science with the
timeless teaching of the faith and the wisdom of the saints. By following the
steps, couples can reduce the probability of divorce to essentially zero.
My wife and I assist in presenting Worldwide Marriage Encounter weekends
and that would be another great enrichment to attend. The weekends start on
Friday night and end early Sunday afternoon. The weekend is given by three
couples and a priest. The weekend is designed to enrich the sacrament of
marriage and holy orders. The enrichment is considered a unique approach
aimed at revitalizing Christian Marriage. The focus of the weekend is for
couples or priests to learn a new communication technique that enhances
their relationships with each other or their parish. More information can be
found on www.wwme.org.
So again, check your Diocese for faith and marriage enrichments in your
area and make sure that they are a priority in your Council, Auxiliary or
Assembly.
Let’s talk about our Ladies! Yes,
I said Ladies, a subject near and dear
to my heart. As many of you may
know Chris and I were the State Aux-
iliary Chair Couple for 4 years. We
have experienced the thrills and chal-
lenges our current Chair Couple go
through. You may be saying Chris
and I had to support the ladies, it was
our job. I would like to put things in
perspective. Before our Chairman-
ship I was a Grand Knight and Faith-
ful Navigator of two very successful
groups - Duchesne Council 2951 and
Bishop Wurm Assembly 2012. They
were and still are very strong and
vital organizations because of their
ladies. As leader of these men and
ladies I relied on both to work closely
if we were going to grow and thrive.
I learned early the value of a good
auxiliary supporting our programs
was the key to success of both Knights
organizations.
This article is usually sent to Grand
Knights, Faithful Navigators, Dis-
trict Deputies and Lady Presidents.
So this is the exact audience I wish to
speak to. As leaders of this great
organization we tend to forget the
Knights of Columbus is a “Family”
organization. Sure the men are the
driving force, but let’s not forget the
value our ladies and families contrib-
ute to what we do as Knights. Let’s
look at the Ladies motto for example:
“Helping Knights Help Others”. I
remember hearing of all the activities
these Auxiliaries would do to help
their Council be successful. Fish
Fry’s, Bar B Ques, Baby Bottle Cam-
paigns, the list goes on and on.
We know that Supreme Council
does not support Ladies Auxiliaries.
But our State Council fully supports
our Auxiliaries! You are probably
wondering why I am making such a
fuss about the Auxiliaries. It’s simple,
we have seen how successful Coun-
cils can be with an active vibrant
Auxiliary. We mention this now be-
cause you have an opportunity to
learn more about your current Auxil-
iaries or start a new Auxiliary by
attending one of the upcoming Area
meetings. These meetings are
scheduled throughout the month of
October into November.
Who should attend these meet-
ings? My answer is EVERYONE.
These are not just for the Ladies but
for Grand Knights, Council Officers,
Faithful Navigators, District Depu-
ties, Chairmen, State Officers and
Directors. These meetings are de-
signed to pass vital information to
our ladies and to strengthen the lines
of communication between Councils
and Auxiliaries. These women are
wanting information about what is
going on in our Councils and State.
As of the date of this article the
next Area meeting will be Sunday
October 4th at Fr. Siesl Council 1121
in Washington, MO. at 1:00PM. Con-
tact our State Chair Couple, John and
Julie Clark at 417-880-4292 or 417-
880-4220 for more information about
this meeting and the others coming
up in the next of couple of months.
Just a quick reminder that our
State Bowling Tournament is Octo-
ber 17thand 18th and October 24th
and 25th. It will be held at the Jack-
son Lanes in Jackson Missouri. For
more information contact Ennis Wm
Hinkebein II at 573-243-3367 or 573-
450-4719.
Vivat Jesus!
I am going to deviate from my normal newsletter article this month since
we have a chance for our voices to be heard and I want all members to know their
help is desperately needed and we need to make sure this is presented to all
members. Below is a letter received from Supreme Knight Carl Anderson asking
for your support in contacting your elected representatives regarding upcoming
votes in Congress. An update since this letter was received is the good news that
House Resolution 3134 to Defund Planned Parenthood was passed by the House
on Friday. Please make sure that you share this information at your next council
meeting and request members of your council, parish and community to take
action as well. Please act quickly on this request and do your part to help defend
life.
FAMILY ACTIVITIES
DIRECTOR
TIM BEUSSINK
My Brother Knights, family day at
the ballpark, held on Saturday, Sep-
tember 5th was a success. Over 220
Knights and their families saw a great
ball game and the weather was fantas-
tic. Thanks to all who attended and to
Chairman Bill Schulte for all the hard
work he did in promoting and orga-
nizing the event. Over $1,000 was
raised for the Knights of Columbus
Developmental Wing at Cardinal
Glennon Children’s Hospital. And
we also brought our Cardinals a win
over the Pirates! Please join me and
congratulating Chairman Bill Schulte
on a great job!
Coming soon will be the Children’s
Christmas Party at the December Mid-
Year meeting. For all the new DD’s,
we will have a Children’s Party on
Saturday afternoon with crafts and
clowns. The Missouri Clown Clubs
do one fantastic job, and I’m looking
forward to seeing them this year. Then,
when the adults are in the banquet, we
have a children’s pizza party. Later,
the kids will join the parents and we
should have a visit from that jolly old
man in the red suit. More information
will be coming and a formal invitation
email to RSVP so we know how many
children will be attending.
Let us not forget our recognition
programs in our councils. Summer is
normally a slow time receiving appli-
cations. Now that summer is over
please consider recognizing your
Knights, Families, and Youth.
In case you missed the last edition
of the Columbia magazine please go
to www.kofc.org and click on publi-
cations. In the September issue there
is so many great articles on family and
the church. It is certainly worth your
time. Speaking of family this month’s
activities from “Building the Domes-
tic Church” magazine include the fol-
lowing: Make a family tree and dis-
cuss your ancestry with your children
or a niece or nephew. Send a “think-
ing of you” card to an elderly relative
that may not live nearby. Lastly take
time to visit the cemetery and pray for
deceased relatives. Council activities
include participating in a “Food for
Families” campaign.
District Deputies, if you haven’t done so, you need to submit your Roses for Life orders to Chairman Tom
Mattingly. Please make sure that you have plenty of Roses on hand as they do not go bad. The Roses will be
available for pick up at the December DD meeting and your DD will deliver them back to your council. Chairman
Mattingly would also like to remind all council that participated in the Silver Rose Run that you need to turn in
your attendance report to him as he needs to finalize his report to Supreme. I want to remind you to say three Hail
Mary’s at the end of every meeting and function for the end of abortion and remember to Celebrate Everything!
Dear Brother Knights,
Congress is set to vote in the coming days on three important pro-life measures. In the House, the Defund
Planned Parenthood Act (H.R. 3134) would put a one-year moratorium on funding for the organization unless
it agrees to abandon its abortion practice. Also in the House, the Born Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act
(H.R. 3504) provides federal criminal and civil penalties for failing to provide care to an infant who has survived
an abortion attempt. Next week, the Senate is expected to take up the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act
(S. 1553), which bans abortions after 20 weeks of gestation, the point at which experts agree that the unborn feel
pain. Please contact your elected representatives in support of these measures.

At the heart of these three pieces of legislation is recognition of the dignity of the unborn child. In the past
several weeks, through the release of several undercover videos, the United States has received a distinct call to
reexamine its conscience regarding abortion, which claims the lives of over a million unborn children every year
in this country.
As you may know, most of the videos show or explain some aspect of the harvesting of organs for monetary
compensation, including the grisly details of how these organs are extracted from recently aborted babies, many
of them late-term.
Congress has held two hearings, one in the House Judiciary Committee, and one in the Energy and Commerce
Committee, investigating the practices of Planned Parenthood and shining a light on this disregard for human life.
I was moved recently to see the video intervBiew of Utah Congresswoman Mia Love discussing the Planned
Parenthood videos: “Here we are in the United States of America, and our job is to protect life, liberty and the
pursuit of happiness—first and foremost life,” she said.
There simply is no good reason for taxpayers to fund Planned Parenthood or any organization that performs
abortions.
Thank you for all you do in support of the dignity of human life.
Vivat Jesus!

SCHEDULE OF UPCOMING DEGREES
Let’s meet our Goal....
1,575 New Knights
As we go into the Fall season, we want to remind all that the Area Meetings
are in full swing. These meetings are a chance for the Ladies Auxiliary officers
and members to get together and receive information needed for the year.
These meetings are also a time to share ideas and socialize. Focus this year is
on recruiting, retaining, and engaging members and getting back to our core
objectives.
Our Mission as a Ladies Auxiliary is to “Help Knights Help Others”.
Knights of Columbus were formed to render financial aid to members and
their families. Fr. Michael McGivney could not imagine the social and intellectual fellowship that followed
among the Knights. Ladies Auxiliaries continue the efforts of Fr. McGivney’s founding principles of charity
and unity by supporting the fraternity of the Knights of Columbus. We also support each other and the culture
of life.
One of our goals this year is to stress the family aspect of the Knights. As one auxiliary brought up during
the first area meeting, they recognized that the Ladies Auxiliary and the Knights Council were moving apart
and working as two separate organizations. To prevent this, they are starting to have several joint activities
throughout the year. One Auxiliary is attending a Royals game with the Knights Council. Another Auxiliary
joined their Knights for a pub crawl. The main thing is to have joint activities where the Knights and the Ladies
Auxiliary not only work together but also socialize together and get families involved when appropriate.
We invite all State Officers, Chairmen, District Deputies, Grand Knights, and all Knights to attend any
Area Meeting. As you can see by the Ladies mission statement, we are here to help and good communication
is going to make better Councils and Auxiliaries. Please join us at the meetings as able and support your
Ladies.

It’s fall. The air is crisp, leaves are
turning and everybody is in a much
better frame of mind. What a great
time of the year to enjoying the out-
doors! I sure hope all of you got a
chance to do so by sponsoring a Soc-
cer Challenge at your local council.
Please make sure that you forward to
your DD the winner’s sheets and that
they are completely filled out. Make
sure your council number is on them
and they have all the signatures, phone
number, names legibly printed and
complete addresses. Please make sure
you are in contact with your DD re-
garding the date time and location of
your district level competition which
should be held the first half of Octo-
ber.
The regional assignments are avail-
able on the state website
www.mokofc.org under the youth ac-
tivities. The Missouri State Champi-
onship will be held on Sunday, No-
vember 1, at Westphalia Council 1171
starting at 1pm. Please contact Chair-
man Aaron Wood if you have any
questions or concerns.
In addition to the annual themes
for of drug and alcohol abuse, the
Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a
“Keep Christ in Christmas” poster
contest this year. This is a wonderful
opportunity to have kids take part in
what will be a fun and enjoyable op-
portunity to show their love for Christ
and the Christmas season. Speaking of
the youth, if your council has a circle
or is interested in establishing one
please make sure they contact our
squire’s Chairman Don Allen. He can
answer any questions you might have
and do what is necessary to get you
started.
In addition to the Keep Christ in
Christmas poster contest, please make
sure your council has already ordered
the Free Throw, Essay and Poster Kits
from Supreme. This will give you
plenty of time to plan your events
although you should by now have made
contact with your local schools so that
it is already a part of their curriculum.
At the same time you should make
sure your school counselors have re-
ceived the letters and scholarship in-
formation for the new year. The actual
application form can be downloaded
from the state website. Don’t forget
we have an excellent team of chair-
man in the youth activities and they
are more than willing to lend a hand.
All you have to do is ask! Thanks for
all that you are doing for our Youth!
