Acting Manager of the Filwood HopeAdvice Centre

Steve Davidson, Project Co-ordinator of Re-Store inFilwood Broadway, couldn’tbelieve his eyes when he sawuseful timber, going to waste,in a skip! When he asked for it,and explained that Re-Storecould make it into somethinguseful, he was told to take allthat he needed.

I approached Steve to ask if hehad two coffee tables for sale. There were no suitable items inRe-Store at the time, but then heremembered the ‘skip timber’. Heoffered to make two coffee tablesfor Filwood Hope, entirely out ofrecycled wood, using the routerdonated to Re-Store last year byMakita.

With the assistance of studentsworking with Re-Store, the newtables were fashioned out ofreclaimed wood, acquired fromaround Bristol. Built from scratch, under Steve’s watchful eye thenew tables were finished inMarch as the final coat of varnishdried.

An example of two localCharities working together, andmaking the best possible useof timber that would otherwisehave been burned or buried.

Spring should now be in full swing- weather permitting! If, like me,you are not the most organisedgardener, you will be catching-upin the greenhouse. You can buyestablished seedlings, instead ofgrowing from seed.

Seeds to plant now include salad-crops e.g. radish, lettuce, beetroot, and beans. You can buy youngtomato plant and cucumbers togo in your greenhouse – or straightinto the garden with hardy varieties. It’s also time to sow your brassicas- cabbage, cauliflowers, sprouts, broccoli and kale.

Harvest rainwater – or empty yourbathwater and dishwater into yourwater butts! One good soak aweek, come rain or shine, ismuch better for your crops thanlittle and often: it encourages agood root system to form. Don’t forget to hoe and weed.

For summer colour, now is thetime to sow seeds for annualflowers and vegetable-friendlyherbs and flowers that keep thebugs off your beans. Poached egg-plant, pot marigold are especiallygood in the greenhouse to keepyour tomatoes bug-free and sweetpeas and climbing nasturtiumsamongst your runner beans aregood to keep the blackfly at bay.

Any summer flowers will attractfriendly pollinators to your veggarden; rosemary and lavenderare particularly liked by bees. Anice home grown hanging-basketcan go in the greenhouse, or ahanging herb-garden above thekitchen window or patio.MMYY TTOOPP TTIIPP FFOORR MMAAYYPPaarrssnniippss

I love parsnips, but they can betricky to grow. Start your seedsoff in 2” pots in the greenhouse orwarm window-sill this month andplant out as seedlings when thedanger of frost is over. Lots ofseeds just rot in the ground, toocold and wet to germinate: thistechnique should solve the problem.

Happy Gardening!

As I travel around Knowle West Isee rubbish marring our lovelyestate - a deep rooted problemthat never seems to go away.Where does it come from and whois putting it there?

It does appear that a few peopleare making everybody else pay, asthe majority of Knowle West hasembraced the new recycling program.

Children should not have to growup in an environment strewn withrubbish. It is not right for them tothink that this sort of thing iseveryday life.

The people also who think theycan fly tip the area should beashamed of themselves. Buildersrubble, car tyres, metal fencing! You are making life worse for chil-dren who have absolutely no con-trol over the situation as well asdamaging their outlook on life.

We look in horror at children inunderdeveloped countries siftingthrough rubbish so why make ourchildren play areas the same?

Unicef says that Britain has theworst environment for kids to growup in. So if by chance you weregoing to dump some rubbishtonight, don’t do it !

If you have large bulky items andare receiving benefits you can haveone large collection every sixmonths free or as many as youlike for a charge of £15.

Contact 0117 9223838. Take goodquality items to SOFA Project (tel:0117 9543567) and Restore onFilwood Broadway (tel: 01179632521) which could be collectedfree.

On Tuesday 10th April we wentto an Easter Egg Hunt at theHealth Park. We had clues and wewere looking for Easter picturesall around the park. We finishedfirst and gave the sheet ofanswers to a lady and she putall the sheets in a hat andpicked out the winners.

There was an Easter hat compe-tition and we walked aroundand everyone clapped. We allgot an Easter egg because allthe hats were good. After, a ladytalked about recycling yourbottles, turning off your TV andthere are stacks of nappies inthe rubbish for hundreds of yearsbecause they don’t rot quickly. We all had little chocolate eggsand plastic coloured eggs withtoys and sweets and a chickinside. People like me catch a bus togo to school to learn, but wehave to pay to do it - £10 aweek to get to school and back.We should be walking but if itsbad weather, or haven’t got abike and you can’t get a lift, the only other means of trans-port is the bus.

In the 5 years kids spend atschool they spend about £1600to get to school and backagain, if they made the busfare 50p return it will cost£100 a year - a massive differ-ence. My school does not havea school bus, we have tocatch a public bus. This meansnot everyone will get a seatand have to catch the nextbus, making you late.

If you catch a bus at 8 o’clockyou would think you will get toschool on time. But becauseof the long route we take, thebus is likely to get stuck intraffic, so I was thinking ifeverybody going to schoolmeets up in a place likeMelvin Square and Broadwalkthe bus could go a differentroute and miss the traffic.

My ideas for sortin’ this problemare: £2.50 a week bus fare, contact a small company likethe Mede Sprint or big companylike Turners, First Bus to do adifferent route for schools.

So what shall I do? Email:mmaakkaallaa@@kkwwmmcc..ccoo..uukkSubject: Jack Buses

I know, you’re thinking another boringarticle about Diets and weight loss, but please read on and I will explain.

I am 52yrs, old, overweight with highblood pressure and high cholesterol, and I now know its never too late tolearn or change bad eating habits.

When I was a child, food was basicand quick to cook. Then I had childrenyoung and money was short, so Istill followed those habits.

“Get The Balance Right” is a 12week course (2 hours a week) run bytwo lovely women. It’s a newapproach to understanding foodand food groups, and a re-educationinto what we eat and why. Now meand my daughter Sam are on thiscourse, I am re-educating myself. My daughter is learning and passingit on to my grandchildren so theywill learn a healthy way of eating,

which breaks the bad food habits Ipassed on to my children. If youare overweight, underweight, or eatunhealthily, then this course givesyou a good understanding of food;it’s fun and you’re not embarrassedor frightened to ask the simplest ofquestions. So come down to the HealthyLiving Centre at Downton Road fordetails, or tel: 0117 3772256.We also use the CommunityKitchen at Filwood CommunityCentre to cook healthy foods.
