What are knowledge transfer networks?A knowledge transfer network’s main role is to put companies and innovators in contact with the knowledge and funding that they need to bring new products and processes to market.

Why join a knowledge transfer network or KTN?

KTNs provide many benefits including:

Networking – frequent opportunities to network with other businesses and academics through targeted events, meetings and special interest groups organised by the KTN.

Partnering – through their contacts and knowledge of your industry, KTNs can help you find partners for new projects and wider business opportunities.

Funding opportunities – advice on Technology Strategy Board collaborative R&D competitions, knowledge transfer partnerships and other sources of funding for innovation such as Framework Programme 7, Eureka and venture capital.

Information and news – free access to on-line services such as market and technology reports, newsletters, webinars/e-training, events diaries, e-conferencing and collaboration tools, and general sector/application specific information.

Policy and regulation – a communications route between the KTN’s community, Government and the EU, giving members the opportunity to influence policies and regulation in the UK and abroad.

The UK Aerospace, Aviation and Defence KTN is a single overarching network spanning Government, industry and academia with the principal aim of promoting and enabling innovation.

Priorities include:

K delivering improved sector performance through innovation and collaboration. Custodianship of the National Aerospace Technology Strategy and enabling the National Technical Committees are core to this priority

K making the UK a more globally competitive environment for investment in aerospace and defence research and technology

K facilitating innovation and knowledge transfer across sectors

K defining coherent priorities in science, research, technology and innovation and promoting these to Government and industry. This is supported by rigorous analysis and technology roadmapping.

The Aerospace, Aviation and Defence KTN is also host to the Space Special Interest Group – a Technology Strategy Board initiative that connects activity and resources across KTNs with the Space Innovation and Growth Team project.

The Creative Industries KTN was established by a consortium led by the University of the Arts, London, with Imperial College London, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and TIGA, the trade association for games developers. We accelerate innovation by bringing together those who develop technology with people in the creative industries who can exploit it.

Our work covers the 13 creative sectors as identified by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport as performing arts, arts and antiques, crafts, architecture, design, fashion, advertising, radio and TV, film and video, music, publishing, video games and software.

Over two years, we are running a series of Beacon Projects which will tackle big challenges for the creative industries that have emerged from our discussions with leading experts from across the UK. Beacon Projects will identify the priority innovation and business needs that will enable individuals and organisations to turn these visions of the future into business successes for the UK.

The Financial Services Knowledge Transfer Network harnesses cutting edge scientific research to support and protect innovation, competitiveness and market stability. Networking events bring together industry insight and scientific knowledge to identify major challenges and build multi-disciplinary teams to pursue research and development into products and processes. The KTN maps the landscape of challenges and resources, both in business and in academia, and provides independent reviews and suggestions for strategic R&D initiatives.

The KTN is led by the needs of the financial services sector and acts as a voice for the sector in discussion with science funding agencies. It encourages business to have a greater role in shaping its own future, and to anticipate future developments more easily, through close partnership with the science base.

The KTN will help promote innovation in the financial services sector, particularly in areas of risk management behaviour and governance. It will allow the various sub-sectors of the financial services sector to share techniques and issues, and therefore identify areas for required research which will benefit the whole sector.

Mathematics has an underpinning role in stimulating innovation. Modeling and analysis add value in the design of products, operations and strategy across all areas of business. Innovation often occurs most intensively on the interfaces between established capabilities, and mathematics has many such interfaces.

The Industrial Mathematics KTN connects together the organisations that are most able to exploit these opportunities, using mechanisms that are effective catalysts of new activity. We tap into the unique versatility of mathematics to provide our member companies with timely access to relevant know-how and expertise, leading to rapid competitive advantage.

The Transport KTN aims to assist the UK to innovate to achieve sustainable mobility of goods, people and services on road, rail and the sea, as an enabler of economic prosperity. It will do this by seeking out and enabling cross-fertilisation and new synergies across supply chains and transport modes as well as seeking innovative business opportunities from greater intermodal integration.

The Transport KTN covers road, rail and marine and replaces and extends the activities of the former Low Carbon and the Intelligent Transport Systems KTNs.

Its role is to work with such organisations to identify:

K intermodal issues where two or more groups can deliver better solutions through greater cooperation

K issues that are common to two or more communities

K issues in which one group has taken a lead and thus others can learn from that experience.

Critical challenges have been identified as follows:

K capacity

K customers

K cost

K carbon

K security

K safety.
