KNOX NEWS SUMMER 2017

Message from the Desk of Rev. David

There are seasons in pastoral ministry, just as there are seasons in the life of a marital relationship. The honeymoon season, as a time of idealism, is the initial time of excitement and full acceptance of one another: A man married a beautiful Queen like Esther in the Bible; a woman married the charming Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Likewise, the congregation might feel that they have called their perfect minister, and the minister feels that this is the perfect place for him or her. It is a wonderful feeling, to be sure. Yes, not very realistic but wonderful. But this season quickly comes to an end when realism takes the place of idealism.

We are still in the season of honeymoon. At least that is what I feel. However, we know this season will be over in the near future. Most of us experienced that in our married lives, didn’t we? It is a little sad but a natural process just as a marital relationship. In fact, when the honeymoon is over, a mature relationship in marriage begins. This is true in a relationship between the minister and congregation. But how can we build such a mature relationship? This question reminds me of the message of the minister who officiated my wedding. The minister said, “Okay, I have given you how you would not fight with each other in your marital life. As a matter of fact, however, I know that you will fight; maybe even tonight at your honeymoon. Well, fighting is a part of marital life. But you should fight well. What I mean here is that you should make proper use of the time of the fight in order to get to know and understand each other more deeply. But remember - only when you love and trust each other you can fight in a healthy way.”

There will be conflicts and difficulties that would break our honeymoon season. We could be disappointed or misunderstood by each other. Yet, if we can use our conflicts to understand one another, if we fight well, grounded on our love and trust, we may be able to face our new season of mature congregational life together and enjoy the rest of many seasons in the future.

One month left before the summer season. How would you spend your summer? There are many fun and exciting things that we can do in summer: BBQ, swimming, camping, relaxing, boating, fishing, canoeing and so on. But could we spend some time to ponder about our relationship with God? What would be our next season of spiritual relationship with God? Are we ready to fight with God in order to know him more? May God bless you all as you fight with God, loving and trusting him.

Love, Peace and Blessings,

David

Session Report by Heather Catto Session Report

Spring has come and along with it comes not only the welcome signs it brings with it, such as green grass, ploughed and seeded fields and the happy songs from all the returning birds, we also pray that through God’s grace we will transition into a wonderful summer with warm temperatures, plenty of sunshine and just the right amount of moisture to make the crops grow and the flowers bloom.

Over the past months there have been many activities of Faith and Worship that have taken place at Knox Church.

Knox Tiverton and St. Paul’s Glammis shared journey continues and we maintain a good working relationship and share many values as well as shared services. On Sunday, July 2nd there will be a special shared service at the Underwood Community Centre. The Township of Bruce Historical Society approached several churches in the area and they have agreed that Services will be held in Underwood on that day to commemorate Bruce Counties and Canada’s 150th Birthday.

Rev. David continues to enhance our Worship. The last Sunday in March, April and May have been

Praise Worship Services. These services include intergenerational music with a youth oriented Praise Band and our Choir members. It is a very uplifting and well received Shared Service that has been enjoyed by all in attendance.

It was with great joy and thanks to God that David and Yoomi welcomed their baby girl Rilee into their lives and ours. It should also be noted that Rilee has many aunties and grannies in our congregation who love holding and cuddling her.

Rev. David will be on Vacation from July 4th to the 25th and we will have pulpit supply for those three Sundays, we wish the Minister and his family a happy and restful vacation, they have had a very busy time since coming to us last September. St. Paul’s Glammis will be closed for the month of July and are invited to attend Knox Tiverton. Additionally joint services will be at Knox Tiverton during the month of August.

All is good; God has watched over us and directed us well. I wish everyone a happy and safe summer.

W. M. S. report by Alberta

We were fortunate to have our Synodical meeting in Walkerton, so many of our members were able to attend. We are looking forward to having our W.M.S. host the fall Presbyterial in Knox Church in September.

Kintail Camp has once again invited W.M.S. members to “Cake by the Lake” on July 6 – an opportunity to visit the camp and see all the campers in action.

Mission Awareness Sunday is June 4 and the W.M.S. will provide and serve lunch after the service. The donations for the lunch will fund two mission projects: 1) Arise – helping to keep girls off the street to a safe place, and 2) helping the women of Guatemala to become self-sufficient. Thank you to all who contribute to these mission projects.

The rummage sale, in co-operation with the men’s group was a success, thanks to all of the extra helping hands.

W.M.S. meets regularly on the second Wednesday of each month, and all are welcome!

Church Roof As many know, the Church is in need of a new roof. Much research has been done in finding the best option for this project. The roof committee & Trustees met with the Board of Managers and presented their finding for the best option. This information was presented at a congregational meeting. We have decided to move ahead with Hy-grade Roofing out of Guelph. The approximate start date for this project is the first of July. In support of this project proceeds from the monthly barbeques held the 3rd Monday of every month & the Yard Sale being held on June 16th & June 17th will go to towards the roof project.

Yard Sale Knox Church Tiverton will be holding a yard sale on Friday, June 16th from 5 pm to 8 pm & Saturday June 17th from 8 am to noon. Donations for this sale may be dropped off at the church on Wed. or Thurs., June 14th & 15th from 9 am to 5 pm or Friday morning until noon. Please no clothing,

The Men’s Group have wrapped up another successful season serving Soup and a Bun. The members of the group have fun preparing the meal under the expert direction of Chuck. Chuck picks out the menu and the rest of the guys do the best we can to cover the details of preparation. We plan for preparations to begin at 9:30 AM and if you arrive at 9:30 you’ll find the early risers have already done most of the work. That’s not all bad! Chuck continues to outdo himself in selecting great soups and

desserts. Here are just a few of his choices for the past season:

Chicken Noodle and Tomato

Basil Soups with Halloween

Cookies, Pumpkin Spread

and Bread Pudding with

Caramel Sauce.

Turkey Noodle and Carrot

Soups with Apple Crisp and

homemade Squares.

Beef Vegetable and

Cockaleekie Soups with

Bread Pudding.

The Roasted Carrot and

Beef Barley & Vegetable

Soups with Chocolate Cake

and Ice Cream.

As noted earlier, the preparation is done early and that leaves plenty of time for the group to discuss world affairs and things the way they used to be in the Good Old Days. While not all of these problems were solved, here are just a few of the things we worked on:

The Coyotes and Windmills

which dominated previous

seasons – not discussed

recently.

Roofing Contractors

measuring the roof area

with Satellite images.

Underwater Snowmobile

recovery and drying

process.

Garage door infrared

sensors and their

idiosyncrasies.

A story about sliding down

the roof of Knox church.

Where did, “Have You

Hugged a Presbyterian

Today”, come from?

Many Hunting Stories and

Fish Tales.

How to Catch and Release a

Skunk.

Besides the, Soup and a Bun Lunches, the Men’s Group also provided the Easter Sunrise Breakfast and supported the WMS with the Spring Rummage Sale. Your contributions are used to support Knox Church and worthwhile community activities. During the past season the Men’s Group have replaced the kitchen taps and have donated $1500 to Knox Renovation Fund in memory of past members. We thank everyone who supported us this past year and we look forward to getting back together with you in the fall.

Recently the Sunday School teachers of Knox were asked what some of their memories are of the years spent as a young person in Sunday School. It’s a great question and although many years have passed, we all felt some fundamentals have remained the same and it is those, we carry into our lessons. However throughout the discussion there was one recurring theme, regardless of which church we attended as children, and that was of memory work! Some of us memorized the Apostles Creed, the Nicene Creed, Psalm 23, the Beatitudes or our favourite bible stories. But then there were the books of the bible, 66 books that offered tongue twister names and multiples. How many of us experienced flash cards laid out of the floor, creating a serpentine throughout the Sunday School room while they were arranged and rearranged in order? And so a challenge was born; let’s help our young people memorize the books of the Bible. Now every week, beginning with the Old Testament, we present a new

book. A leaf with the name of the book is added to a tree we have in the activity room, then all the memorized books are reviewed and recited. While it’s a challenge from the past, we’ve updated the experience to keep it fun and exciting and the students are embracing the task. Perhaps one day when someone asks one of our students the question, “What are your memories of Sunday School”, they will think fondly on our times spent together and although they may not remember all the books of the bible, we hope they remember the fun and laughter we shared in our Sunday school room.

The Summer Salad supper will be held on July 11. This is one of the biggest fundraisers for the church. The Knox Auxiliary plans this supper but it requires the help from the whole congregation.
