KOC 100-102 HIGHLIGHTS OF COCHIN Half-Day

Explore the many facets of India’s colonial past

through your tour of Fort Cochin and

Matancherry. You will see architectural and

religious influences from Portuguese, Dutch, and

British rule, and also learn about the history of

the Jewish community in Kochi.

Begin with a visit to the town of Mattancherry to

see the Dutch Palace. Designed in oriental style, Mattancherry Palace was

originally built by the Portuguese and presented to the king of Cochin, Veera

Kerala Varma, in the year 1555 AD.

Imagine yourself as a medieval trader as you walk through the Jewish Street –

lined on both sides by picture-postcard houses and shops selling everything from

spices to antiques. At the end of the street you come upon the oldest Jewish

Synagogue in India, built in 1568.

Next, you will head to Fort Cochin to learn about the history of Christianity in Kerala as you see St. Francis Church, the first

European Church to be built in India. Then understand ancient trading patterns between India and China as you view the

Chinese Fishing Nets, or Cheenavala, hung mid-air along the coast.

Please Note: Moderate and decent clothing is required, No sleeveless dress for ladies and a scarf/shawl is mandatory. No

short pants for men.

rich city of Kochi is by bike! Start your

Portuguese Catholic communities. Next,

cycle to the Dutch Cemetery, the oldest

European cemetery in India, and learn

about the Dutch and English migrants

who settled in India during the 17th to

19th centuries.

Continue your way north towards the port, and see the large, suspended Chinese

fishing nets, introduced by traders from the court of Kublai Khan. Along the

coast, you’ll pass the bustling fish market and Kochi’s main bazaar, where you’ll

find tea, spices, dried fruit, garlic and cashew nuts. Breathe in the pungent

aroma of ginger, cardamom and cloves, and wander the streets to browse the

various goods on sale.

Then cycle to the Dutch Palace, and admire the beautiful murals depicting Hindu temple art. Sip a cup of chai tea while you

enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Hop back on your bike and cycle along the coast toward the center of town. Get a glimpse of

the life of the dhobis, a caste group found in India who specializes in washing clothes.

KOC 407-201 Sri Lanka – UNESCO World Heritage 4 days/3 nights

Here is a unique opportunity

to explore three of Sri Lanka’s

seven UNESCO World Heritage

Sites: Dambulla with its

acclaimed frescos; Sigiriya

and the 1200 steps to the top

providing amazing views over

the Sri Lankan countryside;

and Polonnaruwa the ancient

capital.

Upon arrival in Colombo,

embark on this overland UNESCO experience with a drive through the lush Sri

Lankan countryside to the Dambulla Cave Temple. The first of the UNESCO World

Heritage Sites seen on this tour, Dambulla Caves, date back to the 1st Century

BC. It is home to some of the world’s most acclaimed cave paintings and images

of Buddha.

The next day you will discover the traditions and charms of rural Sri Lanka with a

visit to a local village. On arrival in Hiriwaduna, take a nature walk around the

man-made reservoir known locally as a Wawa. Take a catamaran across one of the lake’s tributaries to the farm land where

you can spend some time harvesting the crops with the local farmers. Drive to a local temple where you are able to interact

with the local worshippers and observe the monks in an alms giving ceremony.

Next, you will drive to the second UNESCO World Heritage Site, Sigiriya Rock Fortress. Atop a large colossal rock boulder, which

is about 200 meters high, the fortress was in the 5th Century AD and is a complex of buildings, part royal palace and part self-

contained town with the famous Lion Gate, water gardens, boulder garden walls and moats. Marvel at the famous Sigiriya

frescoes, 21 figures of females depicted as rising from the clouds, some of the earliest surviving pictorial art in Sri Lanka. The

poems inscribed on the rock by admirers of the frescoes, and known as the 'Sigiri graffiti,' are among the most ancient texts in

the Sinhalese language.

The next morning, discover the ancient city of Polonnaruwa by bicycle. Sri Lanka’s second capital, Polonnaruwa. This immense

capital is one of history’s most astonishing urban creations, both because of its unusual dimensions and because of the very

special relationship of its buildings with the natural setting.

After lunch, you will head to a research station for the Association for the Conservation of Primate Diversity & the Smithsonian

Primate Biology Program. The Association has received worldwide recognition with its focus to teach people to appreciate and

respect wildlife especially primates and their habitat. Spend time learning about the Toque Macaque and Purple-faced Leaf

Monkey, both endemic to Sri Lanka, as well as the Grey or Hanuman Langur and the Grey Slender Loris. Walk the Associations

monkey trail trying to identify the different species you have just learnt about.

Returning to the hotel enjoy some free time before a farewell evening of entertaining and rhythmic Balia music and dance.

Balia is a form of dance music popular throughout Sri Lanka and India and originated centuries ago among the Afro-Sinhalese

communities.

On the last day, check-out and transfer to Colombo airport and your flight back to Cochin.

Please Note: This exclusive trip is expressly designed for lifelong learners and others who have already been to India. This trip

requires a Sri Lankan visa. The Sri Lankan visa must be purchased in advance for all nationalities and can easily be done on

KOC 117-201 IMPACT: MISSIONARIES OF CHARITY Half-Day

“We ourselves feel that what we are doing is just a drop in the

ocean. But the ocean would be less because of that missing

drop.”

–Mother Theresa

You may think of Mother Theresa’s words when you take part in

this visit to the Missionaries of Charity Center in Cochin. While you may only be

there for a few short hours, make the most of this opportunity to live her

philosophy that “peace begins with a smile”.

The center of the Missionaries of Charity was founded by Mother Theresa in

1950, in Calcutta, in order to help the ‘poorest of the poor’. Since then, the order

has expanded and now counts 4,500 nuns spread over more than 600 missions

across 133 countries. At the Cochin Center, you’ll meet Sister Cheryl and the

nuns and lay people who take care of the daily needs of severely handicapped

children. As you learn about the operation of this facility and share a meal with

the children, take the time to reflect on Mother Theresa’s legacy and your personal ‘drop in the

ocean’.

Please Note: Participants will engage in the memorable experience of helping serve the noon-time

meal to the children.

Every day, thousands of children in India are forced to live in the

To put an end to this social injustice, Mr. Jose Maveli founded

the Janaseva Sisubhavan organization in 1996 to save and

protect these street children. His first step was to provide

scholarships and educational materials to the children from poor
