    Back to Basics I

How many of you remember the

pamphlet they gave you whenyou were first learning about theKnights of Columbus? Well, Idlike to begin this column with alook back at that pamphlet andthe information it shared with theprospective member. It might bea good way to reflect on the

reasons why all of us are Knights.

    The Vision of Father McGiv-

    neyLed by the quiet, unassuming

curate of Saint Marys Parish inNew Haven, Connecticut, asmall group of men establishedthe Knights of Columbus in thechurch basement early in thespring of 1882. The priest, Fa-ther Michael J. McGivney, sawclearly that both Catholics and

    the Church faced serious prob-

lems in the last half of the nine-teenth century such as anti-Catholicism and ethnic preju-dice, under-employment, lack ofsocial standing, and sometimesthe early loss of the breadwin-

ner of the family. To resolve those problems,

Father McGivney conceived theidea of an organization of

    Catholic men who would band

together:* To aid one another in

times of sickness or death, bymeans of a simple insuranceplan, so that their wives andchildren would not face abject

    poverty.* To strengthen themselves

and each other in the Catholic

    Faith.* To strengthen families and

family life.* To be a strong pillar of

    support for their priests and

bishops.* To be of service to

Church and community bycoming to the aid of those

most in need in society. They called themselves

Knights of Columbus Knightsto emphasize chivalrys ideals ofcharity and support for Churchand state, and Columbus as areminder that Catholics hadbeen the backbone and bul-wark of Americas growth andgreatness from the very begin-

    ning.The State of Connecticut

officially chartered the Orderon March 29, 1882. Its founder,Father McGivney, and those

first Knights dreamed of theday when there would be acouncil in every parish in Con-

necticut. Little did they knowthat their small group wouldgrow into a global organizationof more than 1.6 million mem-bers in nearly 12,000 localcouncils in 13 countries: theUnited States, Canada, thePhilippines, Mexico, Panama,Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Do-minican Republic, Bahamas,Cuba, Virgin Islands, Guam, and

Did you know that about 50%of households in the US & Can-ada have no individually owned

life insurance? Why dont peo-ple buy life insurance:? * 74%list cant afford the coverageas a major reason. * 52% say isthat they cant decide what tobuy. * 50% agree its a goodidea but put it off until tomor-row. * 43% worry aboutmaking the wrong decision. If a client cant decide what tobuy, I will conduct a needsanalysis, which helps identifygoals and objectives while con-sidering your budget, at no

cost. We offer term insurance, permanent insurance, or a mixof both. We believe a combi-

nation of these products cansolve all personal protectionissues. Putting the purchase oflife insurance of can be costly, and I recommend against that. You get older and premiums goup, and you run the very realrisk that your health canchange. A negative change inyour health can cause yourcosts to increase, or cause youto be denied coverage all to-gether. Delay can be disaster. For those who worry about

    making thewrong deci-sion? Well, I

can help. Youcan trust me.I know whatto look forand what torecommend.A conversa-tion with mecan help erase

    your doubts.

Augustinedeveloped the concept of theChurch as a spiritual City ofGod (in a book of the samename), distinct from the mate-

Q: When Jesus was on earthin human form, did he commit

    sins like other humans?

A; Jesus never sinned. TheCatechism of the Catholic Church

states,Following the holy Fathers, weunanimously teach and confessone and the same Son, ourLord Jesus Christ: the sameperfect in divinity and perfect inhumanity, the same truly Godand truly man, composed ofrational soul and body; consub-stantial with the Father as tohis divinity and consubstantial

with us as to his humanity; "likeus in all things but sin." (CCC

467)So how did he, in his humanity,

keep from sinning? He submit-ted his will completely to the

will of his Father.Christ possesses two wills andtwo natural operations, divineand human. They are not op-posed to each other, but coop-erate in such a way that theWord made flesh willed hu-manly in obedience to his Fa-ther all that he had decideddivinely with the Father and theHoly Spirit for our salvation.Christs human will does notresist or oppose but rathersubmits to his divine and al-

    mighty will. (CCC 475)

As Council 2531s new Pro-gram Director and CommunityActivities Chairman, I would

like to share a few of mythoughts and vision for the

coming year. However, before I share thesethings with you I wish to thankour Worthy Grand Knight forallowing me the opportunity toserve the council in this capac-ity and his promise of supportfor the efforts of our programcommittee, the activity chairs

and myself. After several meetings, ourProgram Committee was able

to formulate a calendar ofevents and activities for thecurrent Columbian year. Theseevents will make a positiveimpact on our council, ourrelationship with the church, our council family members, area youth and the community.I am convinced that just a fewmonths into our program cal-endar, our community andchurch will view us an organiza-tion of Catholic men that are

making a difference. However, our council is not

our building. Our council is notjust the officers or those whofrequently volunteer to help

out. No, our council is YOU.

With few we will accomplishlittle, but when each of us thathave pledged our support to

the Knights of Columbus andthe principals of this organiza-tion unite together, we havethe potential and the catalyst to

see great things happen.I know we have a lot happeningin our lives and we all havemultiple obligations. I knowtomorrow is never promisedto us, but do you want to finishout the year knowing that Godblessed you with 8,760 hoursand you applied very little ofthat time to the Knights of

Columbus? Can you share at least 1% ofthose hours for one or more

council activities? I challengeour full roster of members torenew their commitment to

the Knights and pledge to getinvolved. We need your talent, skills, and insight. Unlike otherorganization, our work haseternal significance as we workfor the Glory of God, the pro-motion of Christian values andthe assistance of our fellow

man. Will you take up the challengeand make a difference thisyear? If so, I would love to hearfrom you. Call me at 856-498-

In the last Congress, whenrepresentatives asked for timeto read and discuss the Health

Care Act, the Speaker toldthem they would have to passthe bill and then they could findout what was in it. Well we are

finding out.The Health and Human Ser-vices Department has nowruled that under the HealthCare Law, insurance companiesare required to include in theircoverage as part of preventivecare, birth control and drugs

that can cause abortions. This rule violates the con-

science rights of Catholics andreligious groups by forcingthem to pay for insurance thatcovers birth control and abor-tion. It eliminates the rights of

conscience of Catholic hospi-tals, universities, and healthcare

providers. The USCCB sharply criticizedthe Obama administrationspreventive services mandatesaying it requires health plansto cover female surgical sterili-zation and all drugs and devicesapproved by the FDA as con-traceptives, including drugswhich can attack a developingunborn child before and afterimplantation in the mothers

womb. Its now more vital than everthat Congress pass the Respect

for Rights of Conscience Act toclose the gaps in conscienceprotection in the new healthcare reform act, so employersand employees alike will have

the freedom to choose healthplans in accordance with theirdeeply held moral and religious

beliefs, said Cardinal DanielDiNardo, Chairman of theUSCCB Committee on Pro-Life
