Kokkola is the administrative, fi nancial and cultural centre of the Central Ostrobothnia region.

The city of Kokkola was founded in 1620 by King Gustav II Adolf of Sweden. It is said that the town’s Finnish name, Kokkola, may originate from the name Kokkolahti (Kokko bay).

It was the name of the bay which pushed in from the sea, all the way to Kirkonmäki (church hill). According to the legend, eagles (kokko or kotka in Finnish) used to sit on large rocks in the bay.

Kokkola is known for its students and, in addition to versatile study options, the town off ers numerous cultural and sports activities, and an excellent environment for living a happy and fulfi lling life.

Although you are busy studying, we encourage you to put your books away every now and then, and take a closer look at the leisure activities available to the town’s residents, and see what tickles your fancy. Swimming Centre VesiVeijari, plenty of indoor and outdoor sports facilities and the shops in the town centre are there to counterbalance your studies. For those who prefer the sea and nature, we would recommend the Meripuisto park and, located close to the Villa Elba youth centre, the birdlife conservation area with duckboards and nature trails. If culture is close to your heart, you will be spoiled for choice with the pro-grammes of the Town Theatre and other cultural institutions.

As the old saying goes; you work hard and you play hard. We like to think that it means that if you’re studying hard, you should have access to excellent leisure facilities. TankarThe lighthouse island of Tankar is a versatile destination off ering the leisurely visitor unforgettable experiences in the archipelago and an insight into the history of life by the sea. Old fi shing cabins and the café and guest cabin make up a delightful village in the archipelago, which is overlooked by the old chapel located on its own cliff . The Seal Hunting Museum showcases the old culture of seal hunting, and the area around the lighthouse presents the pilot and lighthouse keeper’s families’ life on the island. It is possible to stay overnight in true island style. You can choose the piloting station rooms at the Tankar Inn, the old rooms of the lighthouse master and his men, or the guest cabin in the fi shing village. Above all this is the beacon, the heart of Tankar.

Neristan For centuries, the Old Town of Kokkola, Neristan, has been the setting for the life and destinies of the town’s residents. During the 21st century, it has established itself as an area of living cultural history. Its atmospheric alleys are lined with restaurants, cafés, guest houses, boutiques and anti-que shops.
