Upon reflecting over the last two years serving as your president, I am overwhelmed by the support and commitment that I have received from so many of you. I could not have done this without all of the help from our staff, our clergy, our lay leadership, the hundreds of volunteers who have contributed their time, and our entire congregation’s financial commitment. We have had a great two years and we are set up for a very successful future,

both spiritually and financially.

It has been an honor for me to serve the community. I enjoyed meeting so many of you and I appreciate all of the positive comments I received throughout my term. It is a great time to be serving on our Board of Directors. We are financially stable and working to ensure this continues for years to come. We have grown our congregation significantly in the last few years along with our Torah Center enrollment. With our growth brings other challenges, but these are good problems to have. We will be in very good hands for next two years as Joyce Feldman steps into the presidency. I could not be happier to be able to spend my last two years on the Board as Immediate Past President, working with Joyce. The following is a little introduction from Joyce for those who do not know her as well. In addition, we will both be at the Annual Meeting on June 25th, and hope to see many of you there (at least come for the lox and bagels).

A Note from Incoming President, Joyce Feldman: I am excited to be the incoming Board President beginning July 1. We are in an exciting time in our Temple history, as we are enjoying membership and participation growth, and are blessed with inspiring clergy and a dedicated staff and board.

As a way of introduction I wanted to share with you some of my background. I have a long history of volunteerism. I have served on the Temple Board for many years and served for two years as Ways and Means VP. I have been highly involved in the Temple Gala for many years, and I also chaired our Purim Bag Committee for the last five years. I bring experience from other organizational boards as well. I have served on the boards of the Alpert JCC, the JFCS and the Long Beach Jewish Community Foundation. I am involved in Federation Women's Philanthropy: I am the immediate past chair. I was active in "Friends of Pathways" and our children's PTA for many years.

I am a native Californian, born and raised in Downey. I earned my Bachelor's in English and my Master's Degree in Educational Technology. I taught elementary school and computers for 14 years before "retiring" to raise our children and assist with our family business. I am married to Hank Feldman who is also very

active in our community. Together we have a blended family of five grown children and three grandchildren. Together we run Performance Plus Tire. Under my direction, our business is about to kick off our 20th Annual Thanksgiving Food Drive, feeding over 800 families each year. When not volunteering and working, I enjoy travel, snow skiing, hiking, movies, researching, writing and scrapbooking.

Feel free to reach out to me if you have input, questions or concerns.

From Steve: Here is a final joke for all of you to enjoy. What did the Temple President say to his congregation on his last day? Thank you, I am both humbled and honored. Ok, maybe not funny but it is sincere.

Tisha B’Av (the 9th day of the Jewish month of Av) is a day of mourning for Jews (this year falling July 31-Aug 1). It is the day Jews remember the destruction of both Temples that once stood in Jerusalem, as well as a number of other tragedies that have befallen the Jewish people over the course of history.

For the most observant of our faith, a three-week mourning period

preceding Tisha B’Av begins on the 17th day of the month of Tammuz ( July 10-11, 2017). According to the Mishnah, this was the day the Romans succeeded in breaching the walls of Jerusalem in 70 C.E.; the Mishnah also mentions other tragic events that occurred on this day in Tammuz . This three-week period leading up to the major fast of Tisha B’Av is called “Bayn Ha-Metsarim–in the Straits.”

Traditional CustomsMegillat Eicha (the Scroll of Lamentations), a lament for the destruction of the First Temple, is chanted during the evening service, along with several kinot (elegies or dirges) written at different periods of Jewish history. The kinot speak of the suffering and pain of Jewish tragedy through the ages.

The meal ending the fast traditionally omits meat and wine, in acknowledgment of the fact that the burning of the Temple continued until the next day. Finally, the sorrow that began on the 17th of Tammuz comes to a halt and the Shabbat immediately following Tishah B’Av is called Shabbat Nahamu (Shabbat of Comfort) because the haftarah begins with the words “nahamu nahamu ami.”

A Modern ApproachTo a lot of liberal Jews, Tisha B'Av has faded in importance as a ritual observance, as it seems the rebuilding of the Temple in Jerusalem has lost its priority and significance in modern times. If this is where you find yourself, instead of getting bogged down with the biblical history related to this day, one suggestion is to use Tisha B’Av as a day to reflect on the suffering that still occurs in our world, and contemplate whether there are actions you can take personally to make any of those situations better.

Knowing the rituals and customs of our past can help, if the time is take to be introspective, can help us grow and understand more of ourselves. There might even be possibilities of introducing new rituals and customs without losing reverence to all that we hold dear and those who have paved our way. As always, we are the masters of our own lives and we create our own transformations.

Have a happy summer!

B'NAI MITZVAH

THIS MONTH'S B'NAI MITZVAHHi, my name is Luc Minkoff and I am a 13-year-old 7th grader at Cubberley School. I enjoy acting, playing tennis and am the Student Government Treasurer at Cubberley. I like to read, hang out with my friends, ride my bike and go to the beach. I am the last Minkoff to reach my Bar Mitzvah, and I’m so happy that my sister Riley and brother Aaron will be with me to celebrate!

For my Mitzvah Project, I collected aluminum can tabs for the Ronald McDonald House, worked on the

Relay for Life campaign at my school, was a Lunch Buddy, and headed a committee for Autism Awareness Week.

I would like to thank my family for their support, my two Bar Mitzvah tutors, Cantor Hass and Kelly Cooper Perler, my Torah Center teachers and Rabbi Moskowitz.

Hi, my name is Logan Putnam. I will become a Bar Mitzvah the day after my 13th birthday, on June 17. I am currently in 7th grade at Bancroft Middle School. Some of my favorite things to do are to play basketball, ride my bike or scooter and play video games.

I feel honored to become a Bar Mitzvah and have been studying hard for this life achievement. I have attended Torah Center since I was in Pre-K, at the Alpert JCC / ECE, and I am proud to arrive at this special occasion. My journey started at Temple Beth Shalom through 2nd

grade then continued at Temple Israel in the 4th grade.

For my Mitzvah Project, I am doing two things. One of my Mitzvot is volunteering at the Temple on the first Saturday of each month, for the Sabbath Fellowship seniors’ lunch. I greet, help prepare the food, serve it to the seniors and clean up. This is an important mitzvah because everyone, especially seniors, need help at some point in their lives, and I am glad to help. My other Mitzvah Project is saving can tabs for a woman affiliated with Temple Emanuel in Roanoke, Virginia. Her goal is to collect 1.5 million can tabs; one to represent each child killed in the Holocaust. With

Miles Senteno will have his Bar Mitzvah on June 24. He started his Jewish education at the Alpert JCC and continued on at Temple Israel Torah Center. Miles is in 7th grade at Marshall Academy of the Arts Middle School in Long Beach. His passions are soccer and scooter riding. He has played goalie on the Marshall soccer team for the past 2 years. He also plays forward on the Greater Long Beach soccer club team. When he’s not playing soccer, he can be found riding his scooter at El Dorado Skate Park.

Miles also loves music and plays trumpet and saxophone in band at Marshall.

Miles enjoys spending time with his friends, talking on the phone, and hanging out at home. He has an older sister Genevieve who lives in Louisiana, an older brother Gabriel, and a younger brother Adam who is 8. He likes to play soccer with Adam and jump with him on the trampoline. Miles also loves to play with their dog Gemma.

For his Mitzvah Project, Miles volunteers at the Alpert JCC Early Childhood Education program. He helps and plays with the preschool children. He loves getting to know the kids and hopes he can continue to volunteer there. Miles also volunteers for the Family-to-Family Birthday Giving Project. This program provides a birthday party in a box for children who cannot afford a birthday party. Miles shopped and then made boxes filled with cake mix, frosting, candles, plates, decorations, and gifts. These were mailed to the Lorenzo R. Smith Elementary School. Both projects have allowed Miles to help young children. Miles is looking forward to his Bar Mitzvah day and celebrating with his family and friends.

help from other people like me, she will recycle and donate the money raised from this project to the Ronald McDonald House. Both of these mitzvot are an honor, and I am proud to be able to participate in them. During this time, my understanding of my Jewish heritage and the teachings of the Torah have helped me to become a better person. I am looking forward to sharing this simcha with family and friends!

Annual Meeting &Board Installation Dinner

Monday, June 12th at 6:30 p.m.Mimi's Cafe • 6670 East PCH, Long Beach

Join us at Mimi’s for a fun night with friends! We’ll recognize our out going board with our gratitude for their service, and install our incoming borad members.

2016 Sisterhood Installation

Dear Sisterhood Board and Members,

On behalf of the Torah Center staff and our entire student body, we want to thank you for providing much-needed shades for our classrooms. The difference these shades make is remarkable; they protect against glare and keep out the heat, allowing our students to focus on learning! Classroom window shades had been on our teacher "wish list" for quite some time. Your gift surpassed our expectations, and we are profoundly grateful.

Thank you for all you do for our Temple Israel community!

With appreciation,The Torah Center Teachers

GREAT GAME DAY!A stimulating and laughter-filled day was had by all at this years’ TIS Game Day. Forty-eight people came to play their favorite games, and 8 or 10 of them were women new to Sisterhood! Everyone was reluctant to leave and lingered to finish conversations or start new ones.

WOMENS NIGHT OUTOur favorite quarterly get-together was at StoneFire Grill. The food was delicious and the camaraderie extraordinaire! Thanks to Nancy Lentzner for the photos!

GIFT SHOP Our Mother’s Day Boutique was a great success! Many saw our merchandise for the first time, and more purchased gifts not only for Mother’s Day, but graduations, birthdays and other occasions. Don’t worry if you missed it, we’re planning to have one each quarter so you can see the great new items coming in. Many of the items help sustain important women’s issues, such as Trades of Hope. Stop in and take a look!

EXPERIENCE ISRAEL NEWSby Bonnie Bachenheimer

Five days ago I returned home from the “International March of the Living,” one of the most important experiences of my life. The International March of the Living (https://motl.org) is “an annual educational program, which brings individuals from all over the world to Poland and Israel to study the history of the Holocaust and to examine the roots of prejudice, intolerance and hate.” While March of the Living was originally intended for high-school students, it is now also offered to adults.

OUR JOURNEY:POLANDKrakow: Including Shabbat services at the Temple synagogue, with 500 Jews singing, clapping and dancing in the aisles of a synagogue that had been converted to stables by the Nazis.Auschwitz and Birkenau (It snowed while we were there!)Yom HaShoah; March of the Living; Auschwitz to Birkenau (10,000+ participants), Schindler’s Factory, Plashzow Forced-Labor Camp, Lodz Ghetto, Radegast Station, Chelmno Extermination Camp, Warsaw Zoo (The Zookeeper’s Wife), Warsaw Ghetto, Korzcak Orphanage (where I learned about the magnificent Janusz Korczak), Okopowa Jewish Cemetery, Mila 18 (We met Max Glauben, a participant and survivor of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising!), Majdanek Concentration and Extermination Camp

ISRAEL:Machane Yehuda, Jewish Quarter, David’s Citadel, Kotel Tunnels TourYom HaZikaron; Har Herzl Military Cemetery, Yad V’Shem Holocaust Museum, Ammunition HillErev Yom HaAtzmaut; Safra Square concerts and celebrationYom HaAtzma’ut; March of the Living; Safra Square to the Kotel, Mega event dinner and concluding show at Latrun, Ayalon Institute - Bullet Factory, Kibbutz Magal, Emunah’s Neve Michael Children’s Home

Our staff was amazing! Tour guide Richard, is the director of Cape Town Holocaust Centre and director of the South African Holocaust & Genocide Foundation. He is kind, brilliant, articulate, fun and tells great stories. Richard was a perfect advisor for our visit to Poland. Jacob lead the way in Poland and Israel. Jacob speaks fifteen languages (fluently!) and remembers

EXPERIENCE ISRAELeverything he’s ever read or heard and everyone he’s every met. He too is kind, articulate, fun and tells great stories -- and ribald jokes. Every group is accompanied by a Holocaust survivor. Maude travelled with us, delighting us with her young heart, anecdotes and wit.

Our Logistics Officer, the astoundingly perfect Cedric, kept the trip organized to perfection. Our busses were always on time, our meals prepared, our sightseeing reservations honored. There was bottled water on the busses, planned and appropriate “pit stops,” and informative tutorials. Not a minute was wasted. Cedric also supervised the armed security officers/medics who accompanied us everywhere.

Our group, “International Adults,” was comprised of participants from Australia, Egypt, New Zealand, Panama, the USA, South Africa, the UK, Canada and Israel. We met student groups from Canada, the UK, Russia, Brazil, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Morocco, the USA, Israel, South Africa, Panama and New Zealand. I gained a few transformed beliefs.

The Holocaust was not a black night with no radiance. It was more like a cold winter’s sky with thousands of points of light, although not nearly enough to light the way. Countless people DID do the “right thing” by hiding, helping, feeding, employing, and aiding Jews, Roma and others. While not as famous or prolific as Oskar Schindler or Raoul Wallenberg, thousands of “ordinary” citizens put their lives at risk to help fellow human beings.

Preceding the catastrophe, the citizens of many countries were bitterly divided. There was no middle ground. You were either left or right; conservative or liberal; progressive or steadfast. People were not willing to listen to the views of the others and were not inclined to compromise on any of their beliefs.

The trip was physically and emotionally arduous. We were on the go every day from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Our sightseeing was unsettling, disturbing and distressing. Nevertheless, YOU and your children MUST take this journey NOW! Survivors of the Holocaust are dying at the rate of 40 per day -- every day! Soon there will be no one alive that was witness to these atrocities. It is our duty to see it with our own eyes and hear it from the survivors, first-hand. In the very near future no eyewitnesses will exist.

In 1939 there were 3.5 million Jews living in Poland. In 1945, after WWII, only 8,000 Jews remained. The Holocaust was not the justification for the creation of the State of Israel. However, if Israel had been established in 1928 instead of 1948, there may not have been a Holocaust – at least not one of such enormous proportions. It is imperative that EVERY JEW FULLY SUPPORT the right of the State of Israel to exist in peace and security.

(If you are interested, please view my Facebook posts, 20 April through 4 May for photographs, details and anecdotes.)

Discussing the book, After Abel and Other Storiesby Michal Lemberger

Vividly reimagined with startling contemporary clarity, Michal Lemberger’s debut collection of short stories gives voice to silent, oft-marginalized biblical women: their ambitions, their love for their children, their values, their tremendous struggles and challenges. Informed by Lemberger’s deep knowledge of the Bible, each of these nine stories story recasts a biblical saga from the perspective of a pivotal woman.

TEMPLE ISRAEL’S 9-12 GRADE YOUTH GROUP

By Owen Sweeney, ANDI President

We installed our new ANDI board in May, and now things will only get busier for ANDI. After helping to lead the end of the year service for the high school program on Friday, June 9th, ANDI teens will host a lock-in (sleepover) at Temple Israel, welcoming Jewish teens from all over Southern California to spend the night watching movies, hanging out, and doing social action programs. Donations of sunscreen will be collected and donated to a local agency that supports the homeless in our community. On Saturday, June 17th, ANDI teens will participate in the monthly Justin Rudd beach cleanup. Following that, ANDI will attend the Temple’s Annual Meeting on Sunday, June 25th, where we will present a report, and then kick off our summer planning sessions right after!

In response to the president’s executive order regarding enforcement of the Johnson Amendment, the Religious Action Center (RAC) published the following statement on its website: “In response to President Trump’s dangerously broad executive order masquerading as protection of religious freedom, Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner, Director of RAC, issued the following statement on behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism, the Central Conference of American Rabbis and the wider Reform Movement: Today’s executive order undermines the First Amendment principles and protections that allow religious life to flourish in the United States. It also attacks reproductive rights, and privileges one set of religious beliefs over all others. The Reform Movement condemns President Trump’s executive order on religious freedom issues in the strongest possible terms.”

In addition, Rabbi David Saperstein, former director of RAC and former U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom proclaimed that “repealing the Johnson Amendment would allow big donors to launder their political giving through churches and get a tax deduction that is meant to support charitable activity.” If that happens, warned Saperstein, “…we will see a massive diversion of campaign funding to houses of worship, which will become slush funds for local, state, and national campaigns. And since churches do not report who their donors are, funneling campaign donations through houses of worship would greatly reduce transparency in election campaigns, thus becoming conduits for dark money and undermining sensible campaign finance rules,” as reported on the May 4th website for the People For the American Way.

“As people of faith,” Rabbi Jonah Dov Pesner challenged, “we understand that the unique American commitment to religious liberty has allowed religious freedom to flourish alongside other rights. We strongly urge President Trump to immediately rescind this executive order. We also call on members of Congress to do everything in their power to oppose and block it… This is an opportunity for each of us to join with the interfaith community by calling, writing and visiting our legislators in support of religious freedom and unity and against its assault.”

INTERFAITH GREETINGSPosition of the Union for Reform Judaism’s Religious Action Center on President Trump’s recent executive order regarding enforcement of the Johnson AmendmentBy Roni Love, member of the South Coast Interfaith Council

(EDITOR’S NOTE: The Johnson Amendment prohibits organizations that are exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code from engaging in certain political campaign activities. The president’s recent executive order directs the executive branch to limit its enforcement of the Johnson Amendment. Below is a summary of the response from the Religious Action Center to the executive order. The summary was prepared by SCIC and submitted by congregant Roni Love. We thought it appropriate for our members to be aware of the position of the URJ on this issue.)

President John F. Kennedy, Address to the Anti Defamation League, (ADL) 50th Anniversary January 31, 1963

Throughout our history, violence and persecution have driven the Jewish people to wander in search of a safe place to call home.

Once, on a warm summer night, I had a surprising conversation with my uncle. I knew he had survived WWI in Poland and had many stories about hunger and deprivation during that time. I knew he had then emigrated to the U.S. and later married my aunt, my mother’s sister. What I didn’t know was how he came here.

He explained that he tried to come here directly but he could not. Exactly why I never found out. What he did tell me was that he went to Cuba and he cut sugar cane to survive. He then said he snuck aboard a ship and came to America. Later, through some amnesty program, he became a U.S. citizen. But until that happened he was illegally here.

I am reminded of this story because of the recent attempts to deprive immigrants from certain countries of the right to immigrate here and the attempts to deport immigrants who are here without documentation. My uncle would have become a victim of such policies.

Immigrants have come to our Long Beach community to escape violence, persecution, and poverty, or simply to pursue their dreams of a decent livelihood and a better life. They became the construction laborers, the port truck drivers and warehouse workers, the small shop owners, and the hotel workers who make this city thrive. And their children enrich the diversity of our schools, and, as they grow, they seek to make their own future richer through higher education. Cal State Long Beach alone has over 1,000 undocumented students.

As people rooted in faith, we have a moral obligation to stand with and protect our immigrant brothers and sisters. The alien is not the undocumented person, but those whose heart is numb to the injustice that surrounds human life. As people rooted in faith, we have a moral obligation to stand with and protect our brothers and sisters.

Welcoming the stranger is both an American and Jewish value. As the Jewish poet Emma Lazarus wrote, and which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest tossed to me.” The United States was founded to provide freedom and safety to the persecuted. Helping refugees sets an example for the nations of the world to follow. Today refugees from many countries are under attack.

On June 6, 1939, over 900 Jewish refugees aboard the MS St. Louis were turned away from the shores of the United States, and sent back to Nazi Europe where many of them perished in the holocaust. HIAS, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, has been helping Jews settle in the U.S. since 1881. HIAS is convening vigils across the country beginning on the evening of June 6, to commemorate the tragedy of the St. Louis and call on our elected officials to stand up for today’s refugees. On Sunday, June 11, 2017 at 4 - 5 p.m. there will be a vigil at the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust in Pan Pacific Park 100 The Grove Dr, Los Angeles, California 90036. Please find time to attend.
