One of the last parashiyot in Numbers, Pinchas includes a diverse set of stories. It advances the narrative to date, reports on yet another census, and details the offerings to be brought on various sacred occasions. The portion is also known for its declaration that daughters can inherit their father’s ancestral property, based on the suit pressed by the daughters of Zelophehad, whose story points to the possibilities and challenges that we face when seeking guidance from the Torah. In the Torah’s imagination, land holdings in Israel, once assigned to specific individuals, should remain in the family, passed down via the male heir. Their father has died without male heirs; will his name and his relationship to the land be erased? “Give us a holding among our father’s kinsmen!” they ask. Moses takes the issue to the Eternal, who affirms the validity of the daughters’ case, and orders that henceforth daughters may inherit their fathers’ land.Is this a story of biblical feminists standing up to patriarchal oppression? Sort of. It is a story of women appealing for equal justice and, within the cultural norms of their world, attaining it, at the explicit instruction of God!
